Institutional Reform in Focus as Gombe Ministry Partners Consultant on Wash reforms PIRP Capacity Building.
In a joint effort to advance institutional reform in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, the Gombe State Ministry of Water, Environment and Forest Resources, in collaboration with Messrs Spherical GIS & RS Limited, lead consultant for the Gombe NG-SURWASH Policy Institution Reform Programme Component, organized a one-day training workshop.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders to build capacity around credible data collection and its role in shaping policies that directly benefit the people of Gombe.
Opening the session, Engr. Nasir of Spherical GIS & RS Limited reiterated the importance of credible data as the foundation for sound policy. He noted that accurate household information is essential for the ministry and its partners to provide the right guidance in enacting policies that are both practical and responsive to the needs of the Gombe populace within the WASH sector.
The Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Eli Posugur, welcomed all participants on behalf of the Ministry and charged them to carry out the task ahead with diligence and a strong sense of responsibility. He emphasized that the outcome of their work would play a vital role in improving service delivery across the state’s local government areas.
Representing the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Wicah Wayas Awak formally declared the training open. He highlighted that the household data enumeration exercise participants are tasked with is critical to effective planning, particularly as it relates to WASH facilities, policy review, and public opinion. He urged participants to remain attentive and committed, as their contribution would directly influence decision-making at the state level.
Also speaking at the event, the Gombe NG-SURWASH Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Ms. Belinda Elisha, commended the collaboration between the Ministry and Spherical GIS & RS Limited. She stated that the household data enumeration, which covers WASH facilities, policy frameworks, and public perceptions, is a cornerstone of the NG-SURWASH programme in Gombe. She called for the adoption of credible and standardized data collection methods to ensure the integrity and usefulness of the information gathered.
The training saw active participation from representatives of the LGA WASH Committees, LGA WASH Departments, Monitoring and Evaluation officers, M&E officers from implementing agencies of GSTWB, GOSEPA, RUWASSA, STWASSA, and the representative of NEWSAN. Together, they reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening WASH governance through evidence-based planning.
The collaboration between the Ministry and Spherical GIS & RS Limited marks a significant step toward ensuring that Gombe’s WASH policies are rooted in reliable data and designed to deliver lasting impact for communities across the state.
