INFORMATION MINISTER URGES STATES, LGA TO FUND NOA PROGRAMMES IN STATES

The Honourable Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has appealed to states and local governments to support the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in its mobilization and sensitization work in order to bridge the communication gap between government and the citizens.

The Minister made this appeal in Jos, Plateau State at the end of the Extraordinary Meeting of the National Council on Information attended by State Commissioners of Information, saying the Agency’s capacity to mobilize support for government policies, programmes and activities remain effective.

According to him, states and local governments appear to have left the burden of carrying the Agency for the federal government with the consequence that some of the activities of government at both the state and local government are not captured in the sensitization and enlightenment programmes of the Agency. For him, no government agency has better machinery than the NOA for mobilizing citizens to support government programmes, policies and activities.

Mohammed had earlier in the meeting warned Nigerians of an impending crisis in the face of unchecked hate and divisive speeches, noting that Nigerians risk the loss of their freedoms if the current ugly trend of hate speeches is allowed to snowball into a war situation. In his words, “If we allow our country to be plunged into crisis just because of the antics of an irresponsible few, neither the journalists nor any other professional will be able to practice their profession”. He was however optimistic that with improved funding for NOA, the Agency will be better empowered to mobilize Nigerians against hate speeches and fake news. He also urged Nigerian celebrities to exhibit patriotism by volunteering to become national peace ambassadors in order to effectively influence and stir the youths away from anti-peace tendencies.

Lawmaker Marshal Action Plan for WAI Brigade
A member of the House of Representatives, Chief Temitope Olatoye says there is an urgent need to strengthen the War Against Indiscipline, WAI Brigade to make it more effective at the grass roots.
Chief Olatoye made the call in Ibadan, at the end of three days annual campaign exercise for the officers of WAI Brigade, Oyo State Command.
About three hundred officers participated in the exercise.
WAI, an initiative of President Muhammadu Buhari, while he was Military Head of State over thirty years ago was re-launched last month in Abuja.
War Against Indiscipline Brigade was established to serve as a driving force for a re-orientation of every Nigerian.
Over the years, the activities of WAI Brigade has been confronted with many obstacles such as poor funding and non-recognition by successive governments.
However, with the relaunch of the WAI Brigade, the National Orientation Agency, Oyo State Directorate embarked on a campaign for effective training of officers.
Speaking at the grand finale, Chairman, House Committee on Urban and Regional Planning, Chief Temitope Olatoye pointed out that officers of the brigade must be empowered to make President Muhammadu Buhari”s “Change” campaign more effective among the masses.
Chief Olatoye equally advised officers of the WAI Brigade to maintain integrity in their daily activities being mirrors of the government at the grass roots.
Also, speaking, the Oyo State WAI Brigade Commander, Mr. Wale Adebayo expressed the determination and readiness of the brigade for the tasks ahead.
Earlier, the Oyo State Director, National Orientation Agency, Mrs. Dolapo Dosumu pointed out that the officers had undergone training on ethics and intelligence gathering.
Mrs. Dosumu also appealed to Nigerians to support the various programmes of the present administration to make the country a better place for all.

THE RETURN OF WAR AGAINST INDISCIPLINE

IN an attempt to return sanity to nation, the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, on Monday, relaunched the War Against Indiscipline, WAI Brigade, in Abuja, saying in this era of insecurity, violence, kidnapping, and other forms of social vices, the role of the Brigade in civil intelligence gathering cannot be over emphasized.

President Muhammadu Buhari Announcing the development on the occasion of the National and State Commanders meeting of the Community Support Brigade, CSB, also known as WAI, the Director-General, National Orientation Agency, NOA, Dr. Garba Abari said the President Buhari administration has declared the intention to relaunch the Brigade for better performance, as well as to bring its activities to the fore. Speaking at the meeting, Abari said: “It’s great pleasure that I have the opportunity to meet with the leadership of WAI, for the first time since my assumption of office about two months ago. This meeting is meant to discuss the repositioning of the WAI Brigade in the current dispensation of change. “I’m not only delighted with this gathering, but excited with you all for keeping faith and working tirelessly to contribute your quota to nation building as volunteers who are not being paid for over 3 decades. So, I salute your patriotic efforts, indeed, Nigeria salutes your patriotism.” The NOA DG, stated that, “in this era of insecurity, violence, kidnapping and other forms of social vices, the role of the WAI Brigade in civil intelligence gathering cannot be over emphasized. It is in this regard that I call on you to encourage your members across the country to redouble their vigilance in the local governments, wards and their various villages, so that we can contribute our quota towards building a secure society.” Abari recalled that the WAI Brigade was a brain-child of President Buhari, who as Military Head of State in 1983 established the Brigade, to instill discipline among Nigerians, as well as fight endemic corruption. “The ills and woes that bedeviled the nation at that time are still very much with us today. That is why, when the National Orientation Agency, NOA, was established in 1983, the War Against Indiscipline, WAI Brigade was automatically drafted to be part and parcel of the Agency to fight against indiscipline, disorderly behaviour in public and private places, disobedience to traffic rules and regulations, disrespect for constituted authorities, filthy environment, bribery, corruption and other social vices,” he said. The NOA boss disclosed that “The present administration has declared its intention to re-launch the Brigade for better performance and bring its activities to the fore. You as ambassadors of the Agency, must, in your respective communities, local government areas, and states contribute your quota to make the change mantra of this administration a reality. Whenever and whereever you see something, you must say something to save our nation from decline.”
