FORMAL HANDOVER AND LEADERSHIP TRANSITION AT THE PRIMARY HEALTH CARE DEPARTMENT, JSPHCDA

Today, Wednesday, 6th May, 2026, Dr. Sadiya Muhammad formally assumed duty as the Acting Director of the Primary Health Care (PHC) Department, following the statutory retirement of Alhaji Hassan Shuaibu Kwalam two weeks ago.

A seamless and dignified handover ceremony was held, followed by a well-attended send-forth meeting in his honour at the new conference room of the Agency’s headquarters in Dutse. The occasion drew the presence of key personnel, including the Deputy PHC Director, Alhaji Muhammad Abdullahi Bulangu, programme managers, and other senior-ranking officials of the agency.

In an atmosphere marked by reflection and commendation, many of the participants eulogized the outgoing Director, describing him as an exemplary administrator, an astute leader, a dedicated mentor, and a consummate professional whose legacy of service remains indelible.

In his valedictory remarks, Alhaji Hassan Shuaibu Kwalam expressed profound gratitude to all staff for their unwavering support throughout his tenure. He also sought forgiveness for any shortcomings and enjoined them to extend the same level of loyalty, cooperation, and professional synergy to his successor, the Acting Director.

Prior to her elevation, Dr. Sadiya Muhammad served as a Deputy PHC Director, where she ably coordinated the RNMCHA+ programme, demonstrating competence, diligence, and administrative acumen.

The meeting concluded on a resounding note of appreciation, mutual respect, and renewed commitment, with stakeholders reaffirming their resolve to strengthen and advance primary health care service delivery under the new leadership.

Monthly Quality Improvement, Leadership and Management (QIL&M) Meeting – Jigawa State Government & Jhpiego

The one-day monthly Quality Improvement, Leadership and Management (QIL&M) meeting was successfully held today at the New Conference Room, bringing together Directors, Deputy Directors, State Quality Improvement Officers (SQIOs), and other high ranking officials from the State Ministry of Health and Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (JSPHCDA), alongside PHC Managers from all 27 LGAs of the state. Development partners, including Lafiya UK, GGHN, Society for Family Health, Nigeria, and others, also participated in the meeting.

The meeting, organized by the Jigawa State Government with support from Jhpiego, commenced with an opening remark delivered on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi Kainuwa, by the Director of Public Health and Disease Control, Dr. Abubakar Said Kanya, who commended the participants and Jhpiego for their commitment and the remarkable progress recorded in strengthening the health system.

Representatives of development partners also delivered brief goodwill messages, commending the state’s efforts in advancing quality improvement and strengthening primary healthcare services, while reaffirming their continued support.

The Jhpiego team (Jigawa office), led by Abubakar Saddiq Abdulrahman, Senior Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) Specialist, also made technical contributions, providing insights to strengthen ongoing quality improvement interventions and health system performance.

Other directors in attendance included the Director of Laboratory Services, Alhaji Sama’ila Ibrahim; the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Abdulkadir Yakubu; and the Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Pharm. Aminu Magaji Jahun.

Participants engaged in a comprehensive data performance presentation, alongside a review of previous action points and ongoing quality improvement activities. Further deliberations included the State QI Officer’s update and in-depth discussions on strengthening the health system through key approaches such as peer-to-peer learning, OSS, and preservice initiatives. The interactive nature of the sessions encouraged meaningful contributions and collaboration among all participants.

Overall, the meeting reinforced the importance of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement in delivering quality healthcare services.

Jigawa Hosts High-Level Multi-Stakeholder Consultative Forum on Global Fund Gender Analysis and Integration of SRMNCAH Priorities into GC8 Planning

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoHSW), in strategic collaboration with the Jigawa State Ministry of Health and the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (JSPHCDA), and with technical and financial support from Jhpiego, has successfully convened a one-day high-level multi-stakeholder consultative forum on the Global Fund (GF) Gender Analysis and the integration of Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (SRMNCAH) priorities into GC8 planning in Jigawa State.

The forum, which took place on Wednesday, 29th April 2026, at Haitel Guest Inn, Dutse, provided a platform for deliberation, strategic alignment, and consensus-building among stakeholders from national and subnational institutions, development partners, traditional institutions, and civil society organizations. The engagement was coordinated by Adolescent Health Desk Officer, Hajiya Maimuna Sulaiman.

The meeting was attended by Directors and Deputy Directors from the State Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and JSPHCDA. Participants included Dr. Aisha Abubakar (Director, Women Affairs), Dr. Saminu Tahir (Deputy Director, Public Health), Alhaji Badamasi Musa (Deputy PHC Director), Malam Binyaminu Haruna (State Programme Manager, RBM), Hajiya Rabi Ahmad (State Reproductive Health Coordinator), Malam Zakariyya Saleh Shehu (State Monitoring and Evaluation Officer), and Hajiya Gambo Sa’adu (State Family Planning Focal Person), among others.

Also in attendance were the State Team Lead of Lafiya UK, Pharm. Aminu Alhassan; a representative of the traditional institution, the Barwan Dutse, Alhaji Umar A. Ahmad; Sheikh Aminu Baba Waziri, representing the Council of Ulama; representatives of Society for Family Health, Nigeria (SFH), VILDEV, Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN); as well as other high-ranking officials from relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and development partner organizations.

Technical sessions were facilitated by Dr. Chioma Oduenyi, Project Director, Jhpiego Nigeria Country Office, Abuja; Mrs. Adekoya Victoria Adeola from the Department of Family Health, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare; and Abubakar Saddiq Abdulrahman, Senior Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) Officer, Jhpiego Jigawa Office, who also contributed technically to the discussions.

Deliberations focused on the Global Fund GC8 implementation process, the gender analysis framework, preliminary findings, stakeholder mapping, and the Gender Analysis Protocol, as well as the development of field data collection modalities.

The forum featured interactive and technical engagements, during which stakeholders provided inputs, sought clarifications, and strengthened shared understanding of key issues. At the conclusion of the meeting, participants adopted key resolutions and actionable commitments, reaffirming their collective resolve to promote gender-responsive health programming and improve SRMNCAH outcomes across Jigawa State.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoHSW), in collaboration with State Ministry of Health and Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (JSPHCDA) and with support from Jhpiego, is organising a one-day high-level stakeholders consultative forum on the Global Fund (GF) Gender Analysis and the Integration of Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (SRMNCAH) into GC8 planning, which is currently underway in Jigawa State.

The forum, holding at Haitel Guest Inn, Dutse, has brought together key stakeholders from the national and state levels, development partners, traditional institution, and other relevant organisations.

Jigawa Concludes One-Day Media Engagement Ahead of April 2026 SIPDs

The one-day Media Engagement Meeting ahead of the April 2026 SIPDs round has successfully concluded today at 3-Star Hotel, Dutse.

Organized by the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency (JSPHCDA) in collaboration with UNICEF Nigeria (Kano Field Office), the meeting was chaired by the Deputy State Health Promotion Officer, Malam Nura Ado Babura.

The session featured key presentations on feedback from the March campaign, overview of polio and immunization, the role of media in community mobilization, and strategies to strengthen the upcoming exercise.

Participants were also given the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarifications, and engage in meaningful discussions, with appropriate responses provided by resource persons.

The meeting had in attendance the Deputy Director PHC, Alhaji Muhammad Abdullahi Bulangu; State Immunization Officer, Alhaji Shehu Ibrahim Kazaure; SERICC Programme Manager, Alhaji Sunusi Sa’idu, as well as representatives of UNICEF, Alhaji Jibrin A. Shuaibu and Ms. Josephine Kakwi; as well as the representative of World Health Organization Nigeria, Dr. Adamu Muhammad Isah, among other stakeholders.

Media organizations present included Daily Trust, Freedom FM, Sawaba FM, Leadership Newspaper, JTV, NTA, NAN, Guardian, Channels TV, as well as U-Reporters, among others.

The polio vaccination campaign is scheduled to commence from Saturday, 2nd May to Tuesday, 5th May, 2026 across the 27 LGAs of Jigawa State, targeting children aged 0–59 months and 9–14 years to immunize them against vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio, tuberculosis, hepatitis, tetanus, influenza, diphtheria, pertussis, diarrhea, measles, yellow fever, cancer, meningitis etc

The engagement reaffirmed the strong partnership between the health sector and the media towards achieving a successful immunization campaign and a polio-free Jigawa State.

NSCDC Advocates Stronger Collaboration with JSPHCDA to Enhance Security of Health Facilities

Today, Monday 27th April, 2026, the Executive Secretary, Dr. Shehu Sambo, received in audience the Jigawa State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Muhammad Kabir Ingawa, who, alongside his team comprising the Deputy Commandant (Operations) and Deputy Commandant (Administration), was at the Agency’s Headquarters in Dutse on an advocacy visit aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two organizations.

The meeting, which lasted for several minutes, was attended by the SSA to the Executive Governor on PHC, Hon. Babangida Lawal Roni, as well as directors, deputy directors, and other high-ranking officials of the Agency.

The Executive Secretary welcomed the team, appreciated their visit, and assured them of a strong bilateral working relationship, especially in securing Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs) for effective healthcare service delivery across the state.

The visit is significant as it reinforces inter-agency cooperation between the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Jigawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency in safeguarding health facilities, protecting personnel, and preventing vandalism or disruption of services. It also underscores a shared commitment to ensuring that communities across Jigawa State have safe and uninterrupted access to essential health services.
