Ukelle People

Ukelle People The page Ukelle people is all about connecting each others far and near. And to get informations The history of Ukelle is still sketchy.

Some argue that their ancestors moved downwards from Benue state, others contend that the ancestors may have moved from the Igbo country. Ukelle people share sociocultural similarities with the neighbouring Igede people of Benue state and Yala people of Cross River state.[3] Major ceremonies such as marriage, burials and dances bear striking resemblances. Ukelle people refer to Yala people as Olla

h, Igede people as Ollah-ewoh and the Idoma people of Benue state as Ollah-akpoto. Kukelle, the language of Ukelle people is grouped by some authorities as belonging to the Benue–Congo sub group of African Languages.[2] However, E. Alagoa in Groundwork of Nigerian History further defined Ukelle people as those who speak one of the Cross River languages. The Lutheran Church of Nigeria, through its Literature Centre in Wanikade, translated the New Testament of the Bible into Kukelle in 1979. In the Ukelle region, the day-to-day Government authority at the local level resides in the village assembly (called ojilla). The village assembly is made up of the king or one or more chiefs, the elders and the youths. In earlier times, a typical Ukelle community had a village square, with the ojilla at its center. Until any settlement of Ukelle people makes an ojilla, they are considered an appendage of the nearest Cross River Statet community with an ojilla. In fact, the term ojilla is used interchangeably to refer to the village, its square or the village assembly. The burial of an[clarification needed] Ukelle man or woman is the responsibility of the deceased family and of the village. A group of villages make up a clan (called an essam). For example in Wanikade, there are three essam: Ogumogum, Otuka and Opuolom respectively. Disputes within each village are adjudicated by the assembly, while disputes between villages within a clan are settled by the assembly of the clan. Disputes between villages in more than one essam as well as matters such as capital punishment, economic use of trees, the forest, rivers etc. are resolved at the general assembly called a lutse. The king or chief wields ceremonial power rather than political power.

*SEN. GERSHOM BASSEY'S PREDICTION OF THE COURT JUDGMENT ON THOSE WITH THE PDP'S STOLEN MANDATE*

The quintessential Senator and the incoming Governor of Cross River State, Distinguished Senator Gershom Bassey predicted the outcome of the fate of those who stole the mandate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to another party in CRS. The Eagle made this statement as a man who sees tomorrow during his consultation visit in Obanliku LGA of Cross River. His prediction wasn't farfetched from the truth as the Federal High court sacked 20 Members of the Cross River State House of Assembly that defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The incoming Governor said, ‘though, defection is an inherent part of democratic processes, however, those who defected from the PDP have been caught red handed by the long arm of the law like a thief without conscience’.

The court, in a judgement that was delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo, held that the lawmakers, having abandoned the political party that sponsored them to power, ought to vacate their seats in line with the prediction of Distinguished Senator Gershom Bassey.

I shall be disappointing some people by what I am about to say now. I am still a strong member of the People's Democratic Party and I have no intention of defecting to any party. PDP gave me wings to fly as Governor of Cross River State. Therefore, I cannot afford to revisit the party with such gesture of ingratitude. Senator Liyel Imoke and I have perfected plans to enhance consummate victory for the party in the state.
My constant interaction with the president stems from the fact that he is the president of a country where I head a subsidiary unit, and not the president of a party. Hence, we must cooperate with him for the success of our country. After general elections, politics, in the national scheme, must be relegated to the back burner, while governance must be enthroned. Therefore, the only national party after elections is Nigeria. The entire record of history is quite consistent with the assumption that any society with distended politics, cannot differentiate between politics and governance. Such society is likely to back-pedal.
I cannot be at enmity with the president to proof some loyalty to my party; I must not be attacking the president because my party is at the opposition. Such tendencies are abhorrent to liberal democracy and must be avoided...Sen. Prof. Ben AYADE - Governor Cross River State .....

Natives of Ukelle community in Yala local government area of northern Cross River State have demanded drastic action from the governor, Senator Ben Ayade to end the recent communal clash with the neighboring Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State as they face extinction.

A group of the natives led by Mr. Solomon Ugo disclosed this in Calabar earlier today when they protested to the residence of the local government affairs commissioner, Mr. John Ulafor in his residence.

Mr. Ulafor is a native of Ukelle.

Bearing placards with inscriptions such as “Ukelle is Weeping; Stop the Killings, Ukelle Children are becoming homeless,” the group said they want to inquire if the governor is aware of their plights among other things.

“We are here requesting the incessant killing that is going on in Ukelle over land dispute between Ukelle Community and Izzi local government area ends; and seeing that there has been a lot of destruction of lives and properties worth millions of naira, we are protesting peacefully,” Mr. Ugo said and called for Governor Ayade to “swiftly act so that Ukelle is not extinct. Our land is our ancestral heritage.”

He continued: “We are marching to the commissioner for local government affairs who incidentally is from where it is happening, to ask if officially the governor is aware of the travails of our people, so that is why we are going.

“Our demands are that most of Ukelle people that have been arrested in connection with this war should be released unconditionally.”

He also called on the government to set up a home for displaced persons affected by the war.

He averred that: “The government should also set up IDP camps to really help people that have been rendered homeless.
