INVESTIGATION UPDATE ON ALLEGED CREEK TOWN MURDER CASE
1. The Cross River State Police Command wishes to inform the public that investigations into the alleged murder incidents at Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area, are ongoing.

2. The suspect, Akaninyine Eretus (M), 40 years, is currently in police custody and assisting investigators.

3. During interrogation, the suspect made statements in which he allegedly admitted involvement in the killing of two persons identified as Okokon and Okon (other names yet to be established) on 24th and 25th May, 2026, respectively.

4. He further alleged that one victim was killed while asleep, while the second was attacked with a machet. The suspect claimed that his actions were motivated by a desire to avenge the deaths of his parents and two elder brothers during a communal crisis in the area approximately 29 years ago.

5. Two bodies believed to be those of the victims have so far been recovered and deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.

6. The Command emphasizes that the suspect’s statements remain subject to thorough investigation and verification.

7. Members of the public are therefore advised to refrain from spreading unverified information, rumours, or messages capable of compromising ongoing investigations or causing unnecessary tension within the community.

8. Residents are urged to rely solely on official updates issued by the Cross River State Police Command regarding this matter.

9. Investigations remain ongoing, and further developments will be communicated as they unfold.

CROSS RIVER STATE POLICE COMMAND

RE: SECURITY ALERT: UNIDENTIFIED GROUP SPOTTED NEAR MARY SLESSOR AVENUE, CALABAR

1. The Cross River State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that following reports circulating on social media regarding a group of individuals allegedly camping along Mary Slessor Avenue, opposite the Calabar Zoo, a patrol team was immediately deployed to the location to verify the situation.

2. Findings from the investigation revealed that the individuals in question are not an unidentified group as suggested. Rather, they are predominantly street children and vulnerable youths, most of whom are indigenes of Cross River State, with a few from neighbouring states, who have left their homes due to factors including lack of parental care, neglect, and other social challenges.

3. Further inquiries established that the children are known to humanitarian organisations and concerned individuals who regularly provide them with food, clothing, and other forms of support. During the visit, representatives of Street Aid Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation working with vulnerable children, were present and confirmed ongoing efforts to sensitise and reunite the affected children with their families.

4. The Command appreciates the vigilance of concerned citizens whose observations prompted the timely verification of the situation. Public cooperation remains vital to effective policing, and residents are encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activities and security concerns through appropriate channels.

5. While no security threat was identified during the investigation, the Command will continue to monitor the area and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, humanitarian organisations, and relevant State Government agencies to ensure public safety and support ongoing efforts aimed at addressing the welfare needs of the affected children.

6. The Cross River State Police Command remains committed to the protection of lives and property and to fostering a safe, secure, and inclusive environment for all residents of the state.

CROSS RIVER STATE POLICE COMMAND ARRESTS SUSPECT IN CONNECTION WITH ALLEGED MURDER OF TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND REGULATORY AGENCY OFFICIAL (TRAMA)

1. The Cross River State Police Command has arrested one Godwin Okoko, ‘M’, 54 years, in connection with a case of alleged murder involving an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA) in the Marian Hill area of Calabar.

2. The incident occurred on Monday, 25th May 2026, at about 9:45 a.m., following a distress report received by the Command that officials of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA), while carrying out lawful traffic enforcement duties, were allegedly attacked during an enforcement operation involving a commercial mini-bus driver suspected to have violated traffic regulations.

3. Preliminary investigation reveals that during the incident, three TRAMA officials sustained injuries. One of the officials allegedly sustained a severe chest injury after being stabbed with a screwdriver and was immediately rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.The two other injured officials are currently receiving medical treatment and responding positively.

4. Upon receipt of the distress report, police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

5. The suspect is currently in police custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, while investigation continues to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

6. The Cross River State Police Command strongly condemns acts of violence against public officers and individuals carrying out lawful responsibilities and assures residents that justice will be pursued diligently and in accordance with the law.

Afegbua, psc, mnips, felicitates with Muslim faithful on the occasion of Id El-Kabir and celebrates children across Cross River State on the occasion of Children’s Day, while directing Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Commanders of Operational Units to intensify security measures and ensure adequate deployment of personnel across the State ahead of the celebrations.

*RE: CLARIFICATION ON ALLEGATIONS OF INTIMIDATION AGAINST CONTENT CREATOR “MC Okrika”*

1. The Cross River State Police Command has noted another video currently circulating online in which a content creator, popularly known as “MC Okrika,” alleged that officers of the Command are seeking him out because of a video he posted concerning alleged police misconduct and harassment.

2. The Command wishes to state clearly that the claim is misleading and does not reflect the true circumstances surrounding the matter.

3. Recall that following the earlier video alleging misconduct by some police personnel, the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, psc, mnips, had already directed appropriate steps to look into the allegations in line with the Command’s commitment to accountability, discipline, and professional policing.

4. It is, however, important to clarify that the officers in question are investigators attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, who were acting in connection with a separate petition on cyberstalking, malicious cyber harassment, character assassination, and incitement of public order through the deliberate dissemination of falsehood, previously lodged against the content creator by Hon. Michael Etaba, Honourable Member representing the Etung/Obubra Federal Constituency, which are entirely unrelated to the video concerning alleged police misconduct.

5. The Command further states that the investigative process regarding the petition had commenced before the circulation of the said video online. As part of routine investigative procedure, officers handling the matter made efforts to reach the content creator in connection with the ongoing investigation. It is important to state that no search was conducted on his apartment or residence during the process.

6. At no time was any action taken against him because of his online publication or comments concerning the police.

7. In furtherance of a transparent and fair investigative process, the Commissioner of Police has invited the content creator and his legal counsel for an interview on Wednesday, 20th May, 2026, at the State Command Headquarters, Calabar, as part of ongoing investigations into all issues connected to the matter.

8. The Cross River State Police Command remains committed to respecting the fundamental rights of all citizens, including freedom of expression, while also ensuring that all complaints and petitions brought before the Command are handled professionally and in accordance with the law.
