There was therefore a disconnection between economic development and public transportation. It was against this background that the administration of His Excellency Senator Liyel Imoke set out to re-engineer the state public transportation sector. The result of this intervention was the upgrading in June 2007 of the then Transport Department in the defunct Ministry of Public Utilities to a full fl
edged Extra Ministerial Department with a Special Advisor of cabinet rank at the helm of its affair. The Department has five units including Planning, Research, and Statistics (PRS), Information and Communication Technology, Finance & Accounts, Administration and Vehicle Inspection Unit. The Department also has six zonal vehicle inspection units and a proposed Road Traffic Management Agency. The Department also has oversight responsibilities over the Commercial Transport Agency (CTA) and Cross Lease Limited. Gabriel Okulaja is the Special Advisor to the Governor, director of Department of Public Transportation.
