As world leaders take to the stage to wish their fellow country men and women Happy New Year, I will humbly follow in their footsteps to also wish my family and friends especially persons with disabilities around the world a very HAPPY NEW YEAR.
At this juncture I would like to highlight my 2-point agenda I hope to achieve within the first quarter of 2021.
The 2-point Agenda includes:
1. Educational Reform in line with SDGs goal 4 (Free education and scholarship to PWDs in Bauchi States).
Almost all Nigerian universities, colleges and the rest of tertiary institutions are not PWD-friendly which has been one of the barriers discouraging young people with disabilities to further their education; this is obviously just an oversight and not a deliberate act on the part of tertiary schools’ respective managements. As a person with disability who had the privilege to study in this tough terrain of ours (in Nigeria), I believe I am in the best position to take a stance on ensuring veritable change in the way PWDs are granted easy access to education and other related developmental pursuits. I also had the opportunity to experience studying in a conducive environment abroad (Malaysia). I intend, with very strong conviction, to transform the Bauchi State educational environment into a disability-friendly setting which I have already begun in the tertiary institution where l served as a lecturer, Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi with the construction of ramps in all the faculties which made them accessible to physically challenged students in the school and a physically-challenged-friendly toilet has also been constructed (the first of its kind in the history of Nigeria).
Two tertiary institutions, Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic and College of Education (COE) Azare have graciously offered free education to PWDs. It is my personal aim as well as an official objective of the Agency for PWDs to see that in the first quarter of 2021, an additional four such educational facilities provide the same philanthropic gestures as their two counterparts. The Agency for People with Disabilities is mandated by laws governing its establishment to seek for such corporate social responsibility.
2. Empowerment. SDGs Goal 8 Decent work and economic growth (500 PWDs across the State)
Empowerment has always been my first priority because Bauchi citizens with disabilities are the number one category that suffer from poverty. As a way of realistically boosting Bauchi State’s economy, the Agency plans to launch a commercial plan where tricycle ice-cream carts designed for carrying assorted refreshments specifically engineered for PWDs shall be distributed with the intention for sale of refreshments at strategic locations.
I intend to personally spear-head this project to motivate jobless PWDs into believing that there is more to life than begging or being taken care of by someone else. In the same vein, the Agency shall target 500 PWDs for additional self-help development activities via the supply and distribution of shoe-cobbling kits. This shall also serve to elevate PWDs out of poverty in the 1st quarter of 2021.
Nigeria is one of the developing countries that harbours high levels of poverty among its Persons with Disabilities. According to statistics, there are more than 25.5 million disabled persons in Nigeria in which 85% of this population have no means of living a good and healthy life due to lack of proper attention by the community and authorities concerned. It has been proven that a lot of disabled persons are educated (or possess the capacity to be educated) and talented, and ought to find themselves in the main-stream workforce. I own a carwash business which primarily provides employment to PWDs as well as able-bodied employees and I hope to expand job opportunities as for this group, I believe that I can create an engaging employment plan which would be beneficial to both the physically-challenged and able-bodied.
As we face another year, another future and another march towards making the lives of Persons with Disabilities plus those of able-bodied people more meaningful as a prerequisite to societal harmony; I would like to whole-heartedly thank our Governor, Senator Bala AbdulKadir Mohammad for taking action beyond the rhetoric of past years and envisioning Bauchi State as a home for all peoples, be they able-bodied or physically-challenged.
Thank you and a have a truly, wonderful happy 2021.
