YouTuber Sparks Outrage After Dismissing Zangbeto/Benin’s Vodun Religion As ‘Fake’

A heated debate has erupted online following a YouTube video by Nigerian travel content creator Steven Ndukwu, after his visit to the Republic of Benin where he filmed and commented extensively on Vodun/Vothun (commonly referred to as Voodoo), a traditional religion officially recognised by the Beninese state.

In the widely circulated video, Steven documented rituals, festivals, markets, and performances associated with Vodun in Ouidah and surrounding communities. While the footage attracted global attention, his commentary — which described Vodun as “fake,” “tricks,” and comparable to stage magic — has drawn strong backlash from cultural advocates, scholars, and members of the Beninese community.

Vodun is not only a spiritual system but a cornerstone of Benin’s national identity, history, and tourism economy. It predates colonialism by centuries and is deeply woven into community life, governance, festivals, and ancestral remembrance.

Mixed Reactions Trail Whingan’s Solar Power Support In Badagry

Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun , has announced the deployment of solar inverter power systems to households across Badagry as part of efforts to cushion the effects of unstable electricity supply in the area.

The lawmaker disclosed the intervention in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, describing it as a practical, people-centred response to the persistent power challenges faced by residents.

According to Hon. Whingan, the intervention involves the distribution of high-efficiency solar panels in the 400–550W class, paired with 1.2KW lithium inverter systems, designed to provide reliable daytime energy and backup power for homes, students, and small or micro-scale businesses during grid outages.
