This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œ๐—•๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜ ๐—ง๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ต,โ€ highlights that orthodontic care extends beyond aesthetics to include function, comfort, speech, oral hygiene, and the prevention of long-term dental complications. Its impact is therefore both clinical and deeply functional in improving quality of life.

Because of this broader importance, gaps in awareness and late presentation continue to affect outcomes in many patients seen within our healthcare system. These challenges reinforce the need for early dental assessment, timely referral, and stronger public education on orthodontic care.

In response, UBTH continues to strengthen its specialist dental services and multidisciplinary approach to care, with emphasis on capacity building, patient education, and improved access to quality orthodontic treatment within a tertiary healthcare setting.

We encourage the public to prioritize routine dental evaluation and seek orthodontic consultation where necessary, as early intervention remains key to achieving optimal functional and health outcomes.

As we mark this occasion, UBTH reaffirms that quality orthodontic care is essential to holistic health- truly, beyond straight teeth.

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Committee, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), led by the Chairman, Prof. Esohe O. Ogboghodo, on Tuesday, 5th May 2026, joined the global community in commemorating World Hand Hygiene Day 2026, with the theme: โ€œAction Saves Lives.โ€

In her remarks, the Head of Department, Dr. O. E. Obarisiagbon, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of sustained commitment to infection prevention practices within healthcare settings.

A teaching session facilitated by Dr. Chinyere Nebe highlighted hand hygiene as one of the simplest, most effective, and cost-efficient measures for preventing infections and reducing healthcare-associated infections.

This was followed by a practical demonstration led by DDNS Irabor Philomina Omonsigho, who carefully demonstrated the correct steps of handwashing and the appropriate use of alcohol-based hand rubs.

The session was further reinforced with visual projections illustrating the key steps of effective hand hygiene, including palm-to-palm cleansing, interdigital spaces, thumbs, nails, and wrists.

The event also featured a quiz competition aimed at reinforcing participantsโ€™ knowledge of hand hygiene practices, with outstanding participants emerging as winners and receiving prizes.

The event recorded a strong turnout, with participants drawn from various UBTH schools, the University of Benin, Benson Idahosa University, and Igbinedion University, alongside members of staff and the wider UBTH community.

Also present was the Edo State Coordinator of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Eyo Nora, alongside other distinguished guests and healthcare professionals.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr. Queen Odinkemere, alongside other IPC committee members, coordinated the successful event, which recorded over 80 participants in attendance.
The IPC Committee and Management of UBTH sincerely thank the NCDC and the Turn Nigeria Orange Network for their valuable partnership, technical support, and contributions towards the success of the event, as well as their continued commitment to advancing infection prevention and control initiatives within the institution.

World Hand Hygiene Day serves as a reminder that clean hands save lives, and that simple, consistent actions play a vital role in protecting patients, healthcare workers, and the wider community.

This aligns with the UBTHCARES vision, which promotes a culture of quality care, patient safety, infection prevention, and continuous improvement in healthcare delivery.

Effective hand hygiene and Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices are essential in reducing the spread of infections.

However, these efforts are often affected by poor access to water, sanitation, hygiene (WASH), and proper waste management systems, all of which impact safety, dignity, and quality of care for both patients and health workers.

In 2026, strengthening IPC practices, especially hand hygiene, is more important now than ever before.

Every action taken toward clean and safe care helps protect lives.

Every clean hand is a step toward safer healthcare.

Today, May 5th, as we commemorate World Hand Hygiene Day 2026, we are reminded that hand hygiene remains one of the simplest, most effective, and most affordable ways to prevent infections.

Health care-associated infections (HAIs) remain a daily threat in healthcare settings and contribute significantly to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), increased healthcare costs, suffering, disability, and preventable deaths.

At the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, we reaffirm our commitment to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) through proper hand hygiene practices at every point of care.

We also recognize that effective hand hygiene and IPC practices depend on access to clean water, sanitation, proper waste management, and hygiene (WASH), which are essential for safe, dignified, and equitable healthcare delivery.

In 2026, IPC action, including proper hand hygiene, is more critical than ever.
