Edo Ministry Reunites Missing Elderly Woman with Family

The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has successfully reunited a missing elderly woman, Madam Cecilia Okpara, with her family after ensuring her safety and welfare for over a week.

Madam Okpara was brought to the Ministry on May 26, 2026, by a concerned citizen, Mrs. Igbinadolor Oghogho, who found her wandering around the Evbuomore-Idunowina area in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to Mrs. Oghogho, she had initially taken the elderly woman to a private television station in an effort to locate her family before eventually bringing her to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for further intervention.

The woman, who identified herself as an indigene of Amanta in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, appeared disoriented and unable to provide sufficient information about her whereabouts or family members.

Upon her arrival at the Ministry, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, immediately directed the Department of Social Welfare to provide temporary shelter and adequate care for the elderly woman while efforts were intensified to trace her relatives.

The Ministry subsequently commenced investigations and outreach efforts aimed at identifying and locating members of her family.

Following the successful conclusion of the investigation and confirmation of her identity, Madam Cecilia Okpara was formally reunited with her family on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

The handover ceremony was conducted by Hon. Eugenia Abdallah alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien.

Speaking during the reunion, the daughter of Madam Okpara expressed profound gratitude to the Edo State Government and the Ministry for their compassion and swift intervention.

She explained that her mother had recently relocated from Port Harcourt to live with her in Benin Cuty and the family was shocked when she suddenly went missing.
" We were deeply worried and searched everywhere for her. We are grateful to the Ministry and everyone involved for taking care of our mother and helping us find her," she said.

Hon. Abdallah commended Mrs. Igbinadolor Oghogho for her sense of responsibility and kindness in ensuring the safety of the elderly woman rather than leaving her unattended.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to protecting vulnerable persons across the state, noting that the successful reunion demonstrates the importance of collective responsibility and timely intervention in safeguarding the welfare of citizens.

She urged members of the public to continue supporting government efforts by reporting cases involving missing, abandoned, or vulnerable individuals to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.

The reunion marks another testament to the Ministry's dedication to social welfare, protection services, and the promotion of human dignity in Edo State.

Edo Govt, WANEP Charge Journalists on Ethical Reporting, Peacebuilding

The Edo State Government and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) have called on journalists and media practitioners to uphold ethical and conflict-sensitive reporting in order to promote peace, unity, and social inclusion in society.

The call was made during a two-day Media Training Workshop organised by WANEP in Edo State to strengthen journalists’ understanding of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda.

Speaking at the event, the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani , represented by Amen Ajayi, stressed the importance of responsible journalism in an era dominated by social media and rapid information dissemination.

According to her, the media remains a powerful tool capable of shaping public opinion and influencing social stability, noting that while responsible reporting can foster peace and understanding, unprofessional reporting may escalate tension and conflict.

She reaffirmed the commitment of the Office of the First Lady to programmes and initiatives that promote peace, inclusion, and greater participation of women and youths in nation-building and governance.

Also addressing participants, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, represented by the Director of Media in the Ministry, Daisy Osunde, described journalists as key stakeholders in promoting peace and protecting vulnerable groups within society.

She emphasized the need for increased visibility and inclusion of women and young people in peacebuilding processes, adding that balanced and ethical reporting would contribute significantly to reducing conflict and strengthening social cohesion.

Hon. Abdallah further reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to collaborating with stakeholders, development partners, and media organisations in advancing gender inclusion, human rights, and sustainable peace across Edo State.

In her remarks, the National Network Coordinator of WANEP, Mrs. Bridget Osakue, highlighted the organisation’s Early Warning and Human Security initiative, describing it as a major platform for monitoring and reporting conflict trends within Nigeria and across the West African sub-region.

She explained that WANEP operates a network of monitors that provide real-time reports on conflict situations, which are shared with ECOWAS and the African Union to aid policy formulation and prompt response to emerging security threats.

Mrs. Osakue added that the organisation also carries out regular situation analysis aimed at supporting preventive measures and sustainable peacebuilding interventions.

The resource person, Mrs. Adesuwa Osa Uwagie, a seasoned broadcast journalist, delivered presentations on various topics centered on ethical and conflict-sensitive reporting, while emphasizing the critical role of the media in promoting peace, combating misinformation, and fostering responsible journalism.

PRESS STATEMENT ON
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE BOY CHILD 2026

Every boy carries within him the seed of something extraordinary. On this International Day of the Boy Child, the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development reflects on our shared responsibility to the boys who will one day lead our families, communities, and our nation.

This year's celebration is a call to conscience. Raising a boy is an act of nation-building, and we must approach it with the care it deserves.

Under the SHINE Agenda of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, Edo State has taken deliberate steps to ensure the boy child is seen, protected, and prepared for a life of purpose.

On part, Her Excellency, Princess Edesili Okpebholo Anani as First Lady, has equally championed this cause by placing children's welfare at the heart of her advocacy.

Without doubt, the Ministry has never lost sight of the boy child. His wellbeing and future remain firmly within our focus, because we believe that a society that invests in its girls while neglecting its boys builds on an incomplete foundation.

To parents, teachers, faith leaders, and community stakeholders we call on you to collaborate with us in raising boys in their formative years. Because what he learns now, determines the character he carries into adulthood.

Let us raise boys who are not only strong, but compassionate. Not only educated, but wise enough to serve others.

A stronger Edo State begins with the boys we invest in deliberately today.
