Anambra Sports Chief, Onyedum Joins Governor Soludo for Historic Dedication of Nnewi’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption

In a momentous blend of faith and leadership, the industrial powerhouse of Nnewi today hosted the grand consecration of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption, marking a profound spiritual landmark for the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi.
Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, stood alongside Governor Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, a constellation of clergy, and eminent figures from Nigeria’s political and business spheres. The ceremony, steeped in reverence and exuberant jubilation, underscored the diocese’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The dedication rite, meticulously presided over by Catholic hierarchs including Bishop Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye, unfolded with sacred solemnity such as the anointing of the altar and walls with holy chrism.

Mr. Onyedum, in a stirring address, lauded Bishop Okoye’s visionary stewardship in shepherding the project to its resplendent fruition. “This monumental achievement stands as a resounding tribute to the indefatigable leadership of our esteemed Bishop, Most Rev. Jonas Benson Okoye, who has propelled this endeavor to triumphant completion,” he declared. He extended hearty congratulations to the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi for this “transcendent feat,” emphasizing its role in fostering spiritual resilience and unity.

Anambra Sports Commission Chairman Onyedum, Attends The Commissioning Of The tennis Court at Umudim Amichi

The Executive Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, on Friday commissioned a newly constructed tennis court at Umudim, Amichi, in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The tennis court was built by a United States–based indigene of the community and sports enthusiast, Mr. Charles Maduka, as part of efforts to promote grassroots sports development and youth engagement in the state.

The commissioning ceremony was preceded by a dedication service conducted by the Vicar of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Umudim Amichi, Ven. Oliver Chigbo, alongside Rev’d Kenechukwu Atuchukwu. The clergymen committed the project to God, praying that the facility would serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing future athletes and champions, while also asking for God’s protection and provision for the benefactor, Mr. Maduka.

Speaking to sports journalists at the event, Mr. Onyedum commended Mr. Maduka for single-handedly investing in sports infrastructure in his hometown, describing the initiative as commendable and timely. He noted that the project aligns with the vision of the Anambra State Government under the leadership of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, particularly the policy on private–community partnership aimed at accelerating development across sectors, including sports.

The Sports Commission Chairman further urged other well-meaning individuals, elites, and Anambra indigenes at home and in the diaspora to emulate the gesture by providing facilities and opportunities that would help young people develop their talents and contribute positively to the growth of the state.

In his remarks, Mr. Charles Maduka expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity and privilege to give back to his community through sports. He said the idea of building a tennis court in Amichi had long been his dream, inspired by similar facilities he enjoys in the United States.

According to him, arrangements are underway to engage a professional coach who will train youths and interested members of the public in tennis. He also announced that schools and sports administrators who wish to use the facility for competitions and training are free to do so at no cost.

Mr. Maduka emphasized that his greatest desire is to hear, in the near future, that the tennis court has produced national and world-class champions. He encouraged other individuals with the means to invest in community development projects that would positively impact the younger generation.

He also commended the Anambra State Sports Development Commission Chairman, Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, and the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, for their support and commitment to sports development in the state.

Those who accompanied the Sports Commission Chairman to the event included Mr. Aka Chika, Mr. John Ezebuadi, among other officials.

Ichida Town, Anaocha LGA, Anambra State, Nigeria - On January 5th, 2025, the picturesque town of Ichida was filled with unbridged joy and excitement as Prince Ugochukwu Charles, son of His Royal Majesty, Igwe Sir Charles Nwabueze Ezeudogu, Igwe Ohazulunye 1 of Ichida, and Mrs. Chizoba Anthonia Ezeudogu, tied the knot with his lovely bride, Chizoba Anthonia. The grand wedding ceremony, held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, was a resplendent affair, graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, Executive Chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC) and Mayor of Anaocha LGA, and Hon. Rome Ibekwe.

The wedding reception, held at the palace of HRM Igwe Ohazulunye, was a lavish affair, attended by a cross-section of family members, friends, and stakeholders from Anaocha LGA. Speaking during the occasion, Chief Onyedum, who was accompanied by his amiable wife, Lady Rita Onyedum, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newlyweds, praising their union as a beautiful example of how professional success, community leadership, and faith can come together to create a memorable celebration in the heart of Igboland.

The presence of Chief Onyedum and Hon. Ibekwe at the wedding ceremony is a testament to their deep commitment to supporting their traditional ruler and the community. The much-anticipated Igwe Ohazulunye Football Tournament has come to a close, with exciting matches played at the finals. The tournament sponsored by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Charles Ezeudogu, Igwe Ohazulunye 1 of Ichida, and been organized by Ichida sports council has been a resounding success, promoting sports development and unity among the people of Ichida.

The finals witnessed intense competition among the participating teams, with outstanding performances from the players. The tournament has provided a platform for young talents to showcase their skills, and the winners were awarded prizes and accolades. In his closing remarks, Igwe Charles Ezeudogu expressed his gratitude to the participants, and supporters of the tournament, commending the teams for their sportsmanship and dedication.

IDEMILI SOUTH LGA CLINCHES TOP HONOURS AT SECOND EDITION OF NONYE SOLUDO VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Idemili South Local Government Area has emerged the overall champion at the second edition of the Nonye Soludo Volleyball Championship, bringing the thrilling three-day tournament at the iconic Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, to a spectacular close.

The championship, which tipped off on December 17, drew 17 local government areas from across Anambra State, in a keenly contested showcase of skill, resilience and team spirit. Conceived to deepen sports development and channel youth energy into productive and healthy pursuits, the tournament has quickly become a fixture on the state’s sporting calendar.

Idemili South LGA surged to the summit of the competition to claim first place, with Njikoka LGA finishing as impressive runners-up and Anaocha LGA securing a commendable third position. The medalists were handsomely rewarded with cash prizes: Idemili South LGA carted away ₦750,000, Njikoka LGA received ₦500,000, while Anaocha LGA went home with ₦250,000, underscoring the state government’s commitment to incentivizing excellence in grassroots sports.

The Nonye Soludo Volleyball Championship is a flagship initiative under the broader sports renaissance agenda of the Anambra State Government, led by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo. The tournament is championed by the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, Founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, in collaboration with the Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC). Together, they are using volleyball and other sporting platforms to promote physical fitness, nurture emerging talent and foster social cohesion among the youth.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Executive Chairman of ASSDC, Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, applauded the athletes for their sterling performances and sportsmanship throughout the competition. He congratulated the winning teams and described their exploits as a compelling affirmation of Anambra’s fast-rising profile as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.

Mr. Onyedum further extolled Dr. Nonye Soludo for her vision and drive in institutionalizing what he described as an “epoch-making” volleyball tournament, noting that the consistency and quality of the championship signal a new era for organized grassroots sports in the state. He reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to sustain and expand such initiatives, ensuring that Anambra continues to discover, groom and project world-class athletes from the local government level to the global stage.

Adding further colour and prestige to the occasion, top government dignitaries, including wives of various LGA chairmen, commissioners and other political appointees, graced the event, underscoring its growing stature in Anambra’s sporting and social calendar.

FUN CHRISTMAS EDITION OF "WALK 4 HEALTHY LIVING WITH NONYE SOLUDO" TAKES PLACE IN AWKA

The Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC) in partnership with Nonye Soludo Initiative hosted a fun-filled Christmas Edition of "Walk 4 Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo" on Saturday, December 20th, 2025, at the New Government House in Awka.

The event, which started at 7 am, brought together fitness enthusiasts, families, and individuals who came out to promote healthy living and celebrate the festive season. The walk, which ended at the Awka City Stadium, was aimed at encouraging citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle and engage in physical activities.

The Chairman of ASSDC, Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, expressed his delight with the turnout, saying it was a testament to the growing awareness of the importance of physical fitness in the state. He commended Dr. Nonye Soludo for organizing such a wonderful event, stating that it was a great way to promote healthy living and bring people together.
