The lectures highlighted the qualities of leadership as vision and volition to be the best and how to attain that excellence.
H.E Donald Duke spoke about the inadequacies holding back the development of resources, how to identify the people with the right vision for leadership, and articulating these virtues because the world celebrates people who have something to offer.
Sen. Ben Murray Bruce spoke about the need for leaders, both past and present, to document their own stories while they are still alive i.e. autobiographies. These will serve as pointers to generations yet unborn on how to achieve good governance with a country as peculiar as Nigeria.
The keynote lecture delivered by Prof. Kingsley Moghalu was an in-depth analysis of why we don't have good governance in Nigeria, the post-colonial Era and post-civil war. He referred to politics as the biggest business in the country where leadership isn't prioritized. In defining leadership, he explained that it is the ability to influence people, inspire, motivate, mobilize and take calculated risks for the betterment of the led. Leaders are people with strong characters who can personalize the aforementioned qualities and steer people in the right direction.
Some of the characteristics of good governance he listed include effectiveness, accountability, rule of law, inclusion & participation, efficiency, and cost of government; and to meet Nigeria's development challenges, we have to firm political organs to enforce nation-building, rule of law, accountability and sexual relationships.
Expounding on his point about sexual relationships vis-à-vis national development, he pointed out that communities, where the women are subjugated, are usually strife, thus women empowerment and recognition is one of the keys to having a functional political organ.
Furthermore, there has to be a clear understanding of our fundamental challenges which transcends beyond politics. When we focus on nation-building, human development, and economic growth, choosing competence over loyalty, that will be the right step in the direction of good governance.
In conclusion, he proffered some solutions to the existing issues - having non-partisan actors, political education among the masses, leadership and governance training for the already elected, and constitutional reordering whereby we return to true federalism. In his parting words, "politics, as usual, won't do the job anymore".
