DRAMA IN COURT AS PASTOR ANAZODO'S SUPPORTERS HARASS JOURNALISTS, DAMAGE PHONES
* ATTORNEY GENERAL CONDEMNS ACT AS COURT ORDERS REPLACEMENT OF GADGETS, WARNS AGAINST HARRASMENT OF PRESS

By Rose Oranye

There was mild drama at the Anambra State High Court, Awka, on Tuesday, September 5, 2026, as persons suspected to be supporters and church members of the General Overseer of Dayspring Assembly, Awada-Obosi, Pastor Harrison Anazodo, attacked journalists and cameramen while trying to smuggle him into the courtroom.

Eyewitnesses said the supporters, who covered the cleric with umbrellas and their hands to shield him from cameras, pushed journalists with the vehicle that conveyed him as it reversed to the entrance door of the court.

Two to three journalists reportedly had their phones damaged in the altercation, while the supporters occupied every available space in the courtroom, leaving no room for journalists and other observers.

Speaking to journalists after the court proceedings, the Anambra State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, condemned the incident.

He said: "My attention was drawn to the fact that the defendant standing criminal trial, Pastor Harrison Anazodo, came to the court premises with some persons who attacked members of the press and damaged their gadgets. I had to enter the courtroom and inform the court of that unfortunate incident, for two reasons: the court premises and the courtroom are hallowed places, and secondly, journalists are the eyes and ears of the public and must be respected at all times."

"I condemned that attitude, reported the incident to the court, asked the court to take note of that conduct in the proceedings of the case, and indicated that I would escalate it to law enforcement authorities," Nweke said.

According to the Attorney-General, counsel to the defendant apologised to him, to members of the press and to the court, and accepted the condition to replace the damaged gadgets.

"The court delivered a bench ruling accepting the apology, directing that the gadgets be replaced, and appealing to me to let the matter rest. This is fundamental to the extent that it re-emphasises the freedom of the press to carry out their duties," he said.

Nweke added that the court further ordered that the hearing in the matter will remain public and accessible to the press and that no journalist should be harassed going forward, warning that any repeat of such conduct would make the trial be held on camera.

Recall that Anazodo was arrested by officials of the Anambra State Government on June 10, 2026, and is facing trial before Justice Jude Obiora on a seven-count charge bordering on allegedly propagating the accumulation of wealth through supernatural means which was proscribed by the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, as well as murder, abduction, and the unlawful separation and isolation of individuals from their families and keeping them in his residence.

World Teachers' Day 2026: Gov. Soludo Celebrates Teachers, Promises New Recruitment, Permanent Secretary Appointments

By Ifeyinwa Ogwo

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo has promised to recruit more teachers and appoint eligible teachers who have reached Director level as Permanent Secretaries in the next batch of appointments. "Promotion of teachers ends at the level of a Director, while the post of a Permanent Secretary is by appointment, and right now, we have some names who have applied and are undergoing scrutiny. In the next batch, the eligible ones among you will be appointed."

He reiterated that the retirement age of 60 remains in place. However, teachers who wish to remain in service longer may do so by choice, provided they express their interest and are assessed on merit.

The governor made the remarks at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed "Standing With Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting The Profession, Advancing Its Status And Shaping Our Futures," held at the Anambra State Teachers’ House in Awka on October 5.

The governor praised teachers for their tireless efforts to educate and shape children, and thanked them for their strong support for his re-election.

"Teachers are the greatest force that drives society to greater heights. It is a noble profession which shows the light and must be the light. The future of Anambra is in your hands; ensure you go to school daily," he said.

Governor Soludo said his administration had embarked on numerous development projects that, when completed, would transform the state’s image.

"The new aerotropolis, the new industrial city, the new markets and the new heartland of Igboland that will be the gateway to the Southeast, is in the making. Our grandchildren, great-grandchildren in fifty or a hundred years to come will see the new Anambra that we are laying the foundation for today," he said.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Anambra State wing, Comrade Chika Grace Chukwudozie, welcomed the Governor and his entourage. She said the celebration commemorates the 1966 recommendations of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on the status of teachers, and aims to recognise teachers and assess issues related to teachers and ongoing programmes.

"Every year, Teachers are celebrated on October 5 to enlighten society on the enormous responsibilities and roles teachers play in shaping and re-shaping the learner, which culminates in a sustainable, reliable and egalitarian society. Today in Anambra State, the narrative is being re -written as Mr Governor has continued to demonstrate unreserved commitment in giving Education in the State its deserved status," she said.

She thanked the Governor for the regular payment of teachers’ salaries and allowances; promotions; teacher training and retraining; extensive school renovations and the upgrading of some schools to smart schools; the introduction of free education through senior secondary school to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Anambra State; rehabilitation and equipping of technical schools; donations of learning materials to schools; provision of shuttle buses and speedboats for teachers, students and monitoring teams to improve teaching and learning; and support and learning materials for students with physical disabilities.

She appealed for the recruitment of more teachers; raising the teachers’ promotion ceiling to Salary Grade Level 17; appointing qualified teachers as permanent secretaries; and implementing the new retirement age for teachers.

World Teachers’ Day: Strengthening Anambra Teachers for the Future of Education
‎
‎By Florence Okpeti
‎
‎As the world marks World Teachers’ Day on October 5, attention is once again focused on the crucial role teachers play in shaping the future of children, communities and society. The occasion provides an opportunity to recognise their contributions and reflect on the support required to strengthen the teaching profession.
‎
‎The 2026 celebration is being observed under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The theme commemorates the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers and highlights the importance of professional recognition, improved status and better working conditions for educators.
‎
‎In Anambra State, the celebration offers an opportunity to assess the contribution of teachers to the state’s education system and ongoing efforts to improve teaching and learning in public schools.
‎
The state government has recruited about 8,115 teachers into public schools, alongside investments in teacher development and digital skills, while 22 Smart Schools have been established as part of efforts to modernise education and integrate technology into classrooms.
‎
‎The state’s education reforms have also prioritised continuous professional development. In June 2026, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, identified teacher training, digital transformation, professionalism, teamwork and quality assurance as key areas for improving educational outcomes.
‎
Beyond policies and infrastructure, teachers remain the critical link between educational programmes and the pupils they serve, helping young people develop knowledge, discipline, confidence, creativity and practical skills.
‎
‎Recognition of teachers has also featured in local initiatives across the state. In Aguata, plans for the 2026 Education Day included awards for outstanding primary and secondary school teachers in recognition of their dedication and professional performance.
‎
For Anambra to sustain its education reforms, continued investment in teacher training, improved school facilities, wider access to digital tools and supportive working environments will be essential to equipping teachers to prepare pupils for a rapidly changing world.

Idemili South Mayor, Ilegbenu Sets Agenda, Declares Emergency on Environment

By Uzo Ugwunze

The newly inaugurated Mayor of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Oluchukwu John Ilogbenu, has declared environmental renewal an immediate priority of his administration and unveiled an ambitious grassroots development agenda aimed at building a cleaner, safer, healthier, more productive and prosperous Idemili South.

Delivering his inaugural address at the Local Government Secretariat, Ojoto, Ilogbenu said that ahis administration would be driven by the philosophy “Idemili South Rising — From the Grassroots to Greatness,” with emphasis on measurable results, accountability, community participation and disciplined deployment of public resources.

The Mayor announced that his administration would immediately domesticate the Anambra State Government’s environmental emergency response, with particular attention to flooding, erosion, blocked waterways, indiscriminate waste disposal and poor environmental sanitation.

He announced the establishment of an Idemili South Environmental Emergency Action Committee to coordinate urgent interventions across communities.

The administration’s environmental programme will prioritise drainage and waterway clearance, improved waste management, community environmental teams, flood and erosion prevention, stormwater and catchment management, cleaner markets and public spaces, as well as tree planting and community beautification.

Beyond the environment, Ilogbenu announced that his administration would undertake a comprehensive baseline assessment to guide development planning and budgeting. This will include an infrastructure audit, Primary Health Centre functionality review, school condition assessment, revenue and economic opportunity mapping, environmental and drainage mapping, and security stakeholders assessment.

On healthcare, the Mayor pledged to strengthen Primary Health Centres as genuine first points of care, with particular attention to maternal and child health and the provision of essential equipment where necessary.

Education will also receive attention through an assessment of school infrastructure and learning needs, while targeted interventions will build on his previous experience supporting WAEC registration and school renovation.

On security, Ilogbenu announced plans to convene a Security Stakeholders Summit, bringing together security agencies, traditional institutions, town unions and community security structures. His administration will also strengthen cooperation with the State’s Homeland Security architecture and explore practical interventions, including strategic solar street lighting, to improve community safety.

"Infrastructure development, particularly internal roads and drainage, will be pursued systematically and in partnership with communities and relevant state institutions, with interventions prioritised according to need, impact and available resources", he said.

The Mayor also pledged to create a more enabling environment for businesses, traders, artisans, professionals, entrepreneurs and young people, while engaging the private sector, diaspora, development partners and successful sons and daughters of Idemili South in sustainable community development.

Reflecting on his previous service as Councillor representing Nnobi Ward 2, Ilogbenu cited interventions including the Light-Up Ngo solar streetlight project across eleven roads, support for Umuagu Model Health Centre, WAEC registration sponsorship, school renovation and road interventions as evidence of what community-government partnership can achieve.

Ilogbenu thanked Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for providing a development framework through the Solution Agenda and said that Idemili South would work to translate the State Government’s development agenda into practical results at the grassroots.

He also acknowledged the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr Mrs Nonye Soludo, for her contributions to healthy living, social development and family wellbeing.

The Mayor commended his predecessor, Hon. Mrs Amaka Obi, for her interventions in community development and women and youth empowerment, assuring that his administration would consolidate programmes that work, improve areas requiring attention and introduce innovation where gaps exist.

He called on residents to support the administration when it performs well and to hold it constructively accountable where it falls short.

Declaring that Idemili South possesses enormous human, cultural and economic potential, the Mayor stated that his administration would be judged not by promises but by measurable outcomes.

He called on communities, traditional institutions, town unions, churches, markets, businesses, professionals, youths, women, civil servants and members of the diaspora to become active stakeholders in the new administration.

“Together, we will build a cleaner, safer, healthier, more productive and more prosperous Idemili South. Idemili South is Rising — From the Grassroots to Greatness,” Ilogbenu declared.
