Onitsha-North Local Government Commissions 100 Environmental Agents, Boosts Cleanliness and Job Creation

In a landmark event, the Onitsha-North Local Government Area of Anambra State commissioned 100 environmental agents to enhance cleanliness and environmental sustainability in the area. This initiative aligns with Governor Charles Soludo's "Clean and Green" vision for Anambra State.

The Managing Director of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), Mr. Mike Ozoemena, performed the commissioning ceremony on behalf of Governor Soludo. He commended the Mayor of Onitsha-North Local Government Area, Hon. Anthony Nweze Nworah, for innovatively employing and equipping 100 environmental agents at once.

"This is a significant milestone in our quest for a clean, green, and sustainable environment," Mr. Ozoemena said. "The state government's decentralization policy has empowered local governments to take ownership of environmental management, ensuring closer supervision and effective service delivery."

The Mayor of Onitsha-North Local government, Hon. Nworah congratulated the commissioned workers, emphasizing the importance of their roles in maintaining a healthy and wealthy society. He announced that this was the first phase of the exercise, with another 100 workers to be recruited in February 2026. He warned them to take their jobs seriously as dire consequences await defaulters.

The Special Assistant to Governor Soludo on Environment, Mr. Obi Okoye, advised the workers to be diligent, respectful, and safety-conscious while discharging their duties.

The Deputy Mayor of the Local Government, Mrs Ijeoma Ejeagwu eulogized Governor Soludo for his giant strides. She encouraged the workers to embrace their jobs with passion, challenging them to reciprocate the good will of the governor and the Chairman by voting APGA massively in the forthcoming November 8th gubernatorial elections.

The commissioned workers expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo and the Mayor, promising to discharge their duties efficiently. One of the workers, Mrs. Ngozi Obodoechi, praised the governor's magnanimity and vowed to reciprocate the trust placed in them.

This development is expected to significantly enhance environmental cleanliness, create jobs, and promote sustainable development in Onitsha-North Local Government Area.

The Rotary Club of Awka Smithtown and Urban in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Environment and the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) has flagged off a "plant a tree and environmental sanitation" campaign in the capital city of Awka.

The exercise which took place simultaneously at the Esther Obiakor avenue, Emeka Anyaoku boulevard and the popular Aroma junction all in Awka saw in attendance the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odimegwu and the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr Mike Ozoemena among other dignatries.

Speaking at the flag-off, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Felix Odimegwu lauded the Rotary Club of Awka for the wonderful initiative. According to him, trees are very essential for urban forestation. He decried the indiscriminate cutting down of trees, noting that the trend has adverse effects on our environment. "Trees produce the oxygen that we take in as humans, and thereafter we give out carbon dioxide, thereby creating a cycle of balance in the ecosystem", he noted.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr Mike Ozoemena expressed delight to be part of this worthy exercise. He observed that this was in line with Mr Governor's resolve to keep Anambra State clean so that it will be livable and prosperous. According to him, when it is green, it becomes clean and healthy living is ultimately encouraged.

The President Rotary Club of Awka, Mr Nwabufor Nwankwo while welcoming dignitries who graced the occassion noted that the Club places great emphasis in protecting the environment especially in our communities; hence the decision to patner with the Solution government in this clean and green revolution.

He encouraged household owners to support the government of the day by planting trees in their homes. This he said will go a long way in saving our environment.

ASWAMA hands over Road Sweepers to Nnewi-North Local Government Mayor

Fifty road sweepers in the employ of the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) have been formally handed over to the leadership of Nnewi-North Local Government Area.

Performing the handover ceremony at the Nnewi-North Local Government Secretariat, the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr Mike Ozoemena, stated that this was in line with the initiative of Governor Soludo to ensure more effectiveness, efficiency, and closer supervision of the sweepers at the grassroots level.

He thanked the Local Government Chairman for the great work he is doing so far, noting that with this handover, cleanliness in the Nnewi urban and metropolis will receive a major boost.

In his remarks while receiving the road sweepers, the Chairman of Nnewi-North Local Government Area, Mr Echezona Anazodo, thanked the Governor for providing this wonderful employment opportunity for our people. He assured the ASWAMA MD of adequate cooperation with the agency and called on the road sweepers to live up to their responsibilities always.

He said; "One thing that is top on the priority of Governor Soludo is the cleanliness of every local government area. It is therefore imperative that we work together assiduously to deliver on the mandate of the Governor as well as ensure a cleaner Nnewi-North".

Collaboration Identified as Key to Combating Plastic Waste Pollution in Anambra State; as Stakeholders Brainstorm in Symposium to Mark World Environment Day

Stakeholders in the environment sector gathered in Awka, the Anambra State Capital, on Friday, 6th June, to brainstorm on issues concerning plastic waste pollution in Anambra State; The challenges and the resultant effects on our environment, as well as the way forward.

This was a symposium organized by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) in collaboration with the Anambra State Waste Recyclers Association (ASWRA) and the Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation (SWEEP Foundation) to mark the 2025 World Environment Day.

In a keystone address to mark the event, the Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Engr Felix Odimegwu speaking on the topic, "Citizen’s participation in solving the plastic pollution challenge in Anambra State”, called for an attitudinal change on the part of citizens; a conscious effort towards reducing our plastic waste from source. The Commissioner eulogized Governor Soludo for being very intentional with issues concerning the environment. According to him, Anambra State today ranks the 4th cleanest state in Nigeria

He noted that environmental compliance is an all encompassing arrangement. Calling on the local government areas, the churches, schools as well as other institutions to play their expected roles in this fight against plastic waste pollution.

Delivering his opening Remarks, the Managing Director of ASWAMA, Mr. Mike Ozoemena, stated that the symposium aims to address plastic pollution, which is one of the environmental challenges bedeviling Anambra State.

The MD called for a collaborative effort between the citizens as well as with partners such as the Coca-Cola foundation, Technoserve, and others in tackling this menace. He observed that plastic waste tarnishes the beauty of our state and poses health risks to our well-being. However, this narrative can be changed by citizens embracing progressive practices and advocating for a cleaner environment, such as participating in local clean-up exercises, supporting local recycling initiatives, and spreading awareness that creates ripple effects on our neighborhood.

Earlier in a welcome address, the chairman of the ASWAMA Board, Prof. Emma Ezenwaji, called on all stakeholders to see the task of protecting our environment as a shared responsibility. According to him, the little we do in our various corners can go a long way in changing the narrative.

Speaking on the topic “Corporate Organization’s Participation in solving the plastic Pollution challenge in Anambra State”, the representative of Coca-Cola Foundation, Mrs. Nwamaka Onyemelukwe, again opined that the task is a shared responsibility and should not be left for the government alone. She harped on the need for collaborative effort towards economic growth whereby corporate organizations participate in building entrepreneurs who will become aggregators that will recycle these wastes within our immediate communities and thereby leaving the citizens in no doubt as to where and how to dispose of their plastic wastes.

Rev Fr. Prof. Jude Ezeanokwasa of the faculty of law Nnamdi Azikiwe University while taking the symposium on the paper “Understanding the new Anambra State Environmental law (2024)” appreciated the State Government and House of Assembly for repealing all the previously isolated environmentally related laws and bringing them together under the new Anambra State environmental law.

He observed that this will give room for a more efficient implementation of waste Management in the state. He, however, warned the government and the supervising Ministry against usurping the powers of the implementing agencies, and when that happens, the environmental law is as good as dead on arrival.

The symposium also featured goodwill messages from the Coca-Cola Foundation, Technoserve, SWEEP Foundation, ASWRA, and the Environmental Society of Nigeria. In all their messages, they underscored the need for partnership in achieving set goals. Panel discussionists also reacted to questions on plastic waste management, the socio-cultural angle to the issues, as well as proffered solutions towards building a proper database of plastic waste generation in the state.

World Environment Day: ASWAMA, Patners to Organize Symposium To Promote Environmental Sustainable Practices

In commemoration of this year’s world environment day, the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) in collaboration with the Anambra Waste Recyclers Association (ASWRA) and the Statewide Waste and Environmental Education Foundation (SWEEP) is organizing a symposium to promote enviromental sustainable practices.

A press statement released to the public and signed by the Managing Director of ASWAMA,Mr Mike Ozoemena invites stakeholders and enviromentalists to the event which will take place on Friday 6th June 2025 at the Best Western Hotel (Meloch) Awka.

According to the statement, the symposium will aim to promote sustainable practices, enviromental stewardship and community engagement in tackling plastic pollution in Anambra State , as well as panel discussions on best practices and challenges.

Furthermore, the symposium will feature presentations of innovative solutions, Exhibitions showcasing sustainable products and services, Breakout sessions for networking and collaboration, as well as Aggregator/Recycler engagement session.

NAFDAC Destroys Counterfeit and Substandard Products Worth Billions of Naira

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and substandard products valued at billions of naira. This action is part of their ongoing efforts to rid Nigerian markets of unwholesome products and counterfeit drugs.

During the destruction event in Awka, Anambra State, the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, represented by South-East Zonal Director Dr. Martins Iluyomade, reaffirmed NAFDAC's commitment to eradicating unwholesome products and counterfeit drugs from the Nigerian market.

Prof. Adeyeye cautioned Nigerians to avoid patronizing vendors who sell banned products, emphasizing that these items not only pose serious health risks but also contribute to crime and criminality. She assured the public that NAFDAC will continue its periodic raids to apprehend those involved in these illicit activities.

The Deputy Director expressed gratitude to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, for his support during the operation. He also thanked the heads of security agencies who participated in the raids and acknowledged the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) for creating a conducive environment for the operation and for being valuable partners in safeguarding the health of Nigerians.

In his goodwill message, ASWAMA’s Managing Director, Mr. Mike Ozoemena, welcomed the NAFDAC team to Anambra State and assured them of Governor Soludo’s continued support. He highlighted the governor's commitment to making Anambra a crime-free state, adding that this goal requires complete eradication of counterfeit, banned, and substandard products from circulation.

Mr. Ozoemena pledged ASWAMA's ongoing support, especially in providing access to dump sites for the destruction of confiscated items. He urged NAFDAC not to waver in their mission to eliminate the circulation of fake and substandard products and drugs.

Approximately 40 metric tons of counterfeit and substandard products and drugs, valued at nearly a trillion naira, were destroyed during this exercise. These items were seized during recent raids conducted by the agency in various parts of the South East and South South regions over the past month.
