The disciplines represented within the College of
Communication and Information emphasize different
aspects of communication and information theory,
research, use and practice. Yet, they all focus on the
elements and means of creating, managing, using and
evaluating messages, and on information components
and processes that are central to communication
interaction.
The evolution of digital and electronic media has blurr
the distinctions and narrowed the traditional differenc
between and among communication and information
disciplines. The College of Communication and
Information provides a coherent and unified structure
the cohesive, collaborative and convergent study of
human interaction and information design, production
processing, management, exchange and evaluation,
while retaining the unique perspectives and content fo
of programs within each of the constituent schools.
The college includes four schools: Communication
Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Librar
and Information Science and Visual Communication
Design.
The college links programs with a pedagogical and
research interest in new technology for information an
communication uses, distribution and content. In
addition, the School of Communication Studies house
the Communication Instructional Resource Lab and th
Communication Research Center. The School of
Journalism and Mass Communication houses two
centers: the Center for Scholastic Journalism and the
Media Law Center for Ethics and Access. The School
Library and Information Science houses the Center for
the Study of Librarianship and the Center for the Stud
of Information and Religion. In partnership with regio
national and international businesses and organizatio
the School of Visual Communication Design engages i
multidisciplinary research focused on socially
responsible design concepts.

Explaining the Science of Library Science
The leaves are falling, the weather is cooling (at least for those of us in temperate climates), and November is whipping by. I can hardly believe how quickly this semester has gone, but I am very excited to head home for the fast-approaching holidays. Like me, you may be looking forward to gatherings of family and friends in the coming weeks—and quite possibly anticipating a lot of curiosity about library school and librarianship.
The many questions and quizzical looks I receive when explaining my career aspirations and current studies surprised me at first. Until I started to apply for library school and to attempt to explain my plans to friends and family, I didn’t realize how misunderstood and underutilized librarians often are. I have received questions like: Why do you need a master’s degree to be a librarian? Why do we need librarians now that we can get so much online? And the crowd favorite: Are you going to take classes about shh-ing people? I have found, as I am sure every librarian and wannabe librarian does, that those without a lot of experience in ā€œlibrary landā€ often have a fairly foggy idea of what librarians do and therefore have trouble imagining the training and study involved in master’s programs.
We need to get better at explaining ourselves. Topher offers great advice on fielding some common questions and misconceptions here . I’d like to build on his ideas with a particular focus on the term library science. Of all the questions I’ve received from friends, family, and acquaintances, I’ve noticed the most confusion surrounding the ā€˜science’ aspect: So you’re studying library science…what is that exactly? How can librarianship be a science? Why isn’t your program described as library arts or library studies?
Those questions have stuck with me through my first semester of library school. At first I wondered if the phrase library science needs a change, but I have since concluded that it emphasizes import

Library and information science is a CBSE elective course which will be introduced in the pilot run mode for the academic year 2014 to 2015. This elective course for classes 11 and 12 will be equivalent to a diploma. The following are the topics that will be covered in the CBSE Library and Information Science elective course: Library Resources, Library Information Society, Library Computer Application, Reference and Information Resources and Library Management.
Greater access to library and information resources has led to spectacular technological innovations and created an information revolution. The public library resources in developed nations have helped its citizens become more informed and open minded. It has contributed to a spirit of innovation and problem solving. Universities, colleges and schools which encourage students to think beyond textbooks have helped students become more empathetic and innovative. Research, development and creativity are important factors that will help future societies to grow. This can only occur if library and information resources are well maintained and updated.
Can you imagine what a futuristic library will look like? E-Books and E-Readers storing thousands of books are already available now. Futuristic libraries will become more and more digitalized and will allow students to access information from the comfort of their homes. Public libraries may become meeting places for people to discuss all sorts of literature. It may provide the impetus for innovative individual and collaborative projects as well as literary debates, discussions and novel literary pieces. Paperbacks and hard-covered books will probably become treasured antique pieces stored in a small part of the library. The rest of the modernistic library will allow more space for seating, E-book referencing, surfing and reading. Virtual and E-book kiosks and virtual tours and presentations of books and information may become a common feature of future libraries and information hubs. Book reading sessions by authors as well as literary workshops may also become part of the libraries of the future. Are you interested in being part of a vibrant and flourishing knowledge and information society? In that case, library and information science studies will help you make a meaningful contribution in the growth and well being of individuals and the country as a whole. It is a career choice/path that may be of great significance in the ultramodern knowledge and information societies of the future.
