THE WICKED MOTHER-IN-LAW
Episode 9 — The Jealous Mother
The following Saturday morning, Daniel woke up early.
He was getting ready to visit his mother when Ada walked into the room.
“Are you going to see Mummy?”
“Yes. I want to check on her and take some food to her.”
Ada nodded.
“That's good.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Do you want to come with me?”
Ada hesitated.
After everything that had happened, she wasn't sure.
But she didn't want to create another problem.
“Okay. I'll come.”
Daniel smiled.
“Thank you.”

When they arrived at Mama Daniel's house, she was sitting outside.
The moment she saw them, her face lit up.
“My son!”
She stood up and hugged Daniel tightly.
“I've missed you.”
“I've missed you too, Mum.”
Ada smiled.
“Good morning, Mummy.”
Mama Daniel looked at her briefly.
“Good morning.”
Her smile disappeared almost immediately.
Daniel noticed but said nothing.
They went inside.
Daniel placed the food on the table.
“Mum, I brought you some things.”
“Thank you, my son.”
She opened the bag.
“You still remember everything I like.”
Daniel laughed.
“Of course.”
Mama Daniel smiled proudly.
Ada watched them.
She was happy that Daniel cared about his mother.
But then Mama Daniel said something that changed the mood.
“Since you got married, you hardly have time for me anymore.”
Daniel sighed.
“Mum, I'm here now.”
“Yes, today.”
She looked at Ada.
“Before you got married, you came here almost every evening.”
Ada felt uncomfortable.
“Mummy, I don't stop Daniel from visiting you.”
Mama Daniel frowned.
“I wasn't talking to you.”
Daniel immediately stepped in.
“Mum, please.”
Mama Daniel became quiet.

Later that afternoon, Daniel and Ada prepared to leave.
Mama Daniel followed them to the door.
“Daniel, when are you coming again?”
“Maybe Wednesday.”
“Wednesday?”
“Yes.”
“You can't come tomorrow?”
“I have work.”
Mama Daniel sighed.
“Your wife will be happy about that.”
Ada looked at her in surprise.
“Mummy, what do you mean?”
Mama Daniel ignored her.
Daniel shook his head.
“Mum, please don't start.”
He took Ada's hand.
“We'll come again soon.”
As they walked away, Mama Daniel watched them.
She felt a deep emptiness.
Daniel had once been the person she depended on for everything.
Now, he had another woman to think about.
She knew she was becoming jealous.
But instead of admitting it, she blamed Ada.

That evening, Daniel's phone rang.
It was his mother.
“Hello, Mum.”
“Daniel, I need your help.”
“What happened?”
“I need some money for my medication.”
Daniel immediately became concerned.
“How much?”
She told him.
“Okay. I'll send it tonight.”
“Thank you, my son.”
There was a pause.
Then Mama Daniel asked,
“Are you with Ada?”
“Yes.”
“Give me the phone.”
Daniel handed the phone to Ada.
“Hello, Mummy.”
Mama Daniel's voice was cold.
“Ada, I want to ask you something.”
“Yes?”
“Are you the one stopping Daniel from helping me?”
Ada was shocked.
“No, Mummy.”
“Because since he married you, everything has changed.”
Ada took a deep breath.
“I have never stopped him from helping you.”
“Then why does he always say he has no time?”
“Mummy, he has work and responsibilities.”
Mama Daniel became angry.
“So now you are explaining my son's life to me?”
“No, Mummy. I'm only saying—”
“Forget it.”
The call ended.
Ada handed the phone back to Daniel.
“I'm tired, Daniel.”
He looked at her.
“I know.”
“I don't want to fight with your mother.”
“You won't.”
“But she keeps blaming me for everything.”
Daniel held her hand.
“I'll talk to her.”

The next morning, Daniel went to see his mother alone.
“Mum, we need to talk.”
Mama Daniel looked at him.
“About what?”
“About Ada.”
She sighed.
“What has she said about me now?”
“Nothing.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because I've noticed something.”
Mama Daniel remained silent.
“You're unhappy because I got married.”
Her eyes widened.
“That's not true.”
“It is.”
“No, Daniel.”
“You miss how things were before.”
Mama Daniel looked away.
“You used to have me all to yourself,” Daniel continued.
“You knew where I was every day. I came home from work and spent most of my evenings here.”
Mama Daniel's eyes filled with tears.
“Now things are different.”
She whispered,
“Yes.”
Daniel sat beside her.
“Mum, I'm still your son.”
“I know.”
“I'll still take care of you.”
“I know.”
“But I also have a wife now.”
Mama Daniel wiped her tears.
“I just don't want to lose you.”
Daniel hugged her.
“You won't.”
For a moment, Mama Daniel held him tightly.
But when Daniel left, she sat alone in the house.
She looked around.
Everything felt empty.
And instead of accepting that her son had grown up and started his own family, she made a decision.
If Ada was the reason Daniel no longer spent all his time with her, then Ada would have to pay for it.
