FCT FIRE SERVICE RECEIVES RISK MANAGERS SOCIETY OF NIGERIA ON COURTESY VISIT, STRENGTHENS COLLABORATION ON SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT

FCT Fire Service today Wednesday 1st April 2026 received the leadership of the Risk Managers Society of Nigeria (RIMSON) on a courtesy visit aimed at deepening collaboration in safety management, emergency response, and public risk awareness across the Territory.

Welcoming the delegation, the Assistant Controller General (ACG) of the FCT Fire Service, Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus , expressed appreciation for the visit which is establishing a relationship between FCT Fire Service and RIMSON. He acknowledged the cordial partnership established over the years, with the previous appointment of the RIMSON President in his role as Director General of FEMA.

The ACG highlighted key milestones achieved by the FCT Fire Service, noting significant expansion in operational capacity. He revealed that the Service now boasts a total of 18 fire stations across the FCT, with the recent addition of three new stations, which includes Wuse market, River park Estate and Kaura.Further strengthening emergency response coverage within the Territory.

In his remarks, the President of the Risk Managers and Society of Nigeria Dr Abbas G Idriss congratulated Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus on his elevation to the rank of Assistant Controller General. He commended the FCT Fire Service for its resilience and professionalism, stating that despite prevailing challenges, the Service remains one of the most effective fire services in the country.

The President emphasized the need for enhanced synergy between both organisations, particularly in the areas of safety awareness and public engagement. He advocated for increased education on fire safety within communities and schools, as well as targeted sensitization for commercial buildings, especially those utilizing elevators and escalators.

He further raised concerns over safety infractions observed in public plazas, particularly the improper storage of fuel within generator houses, and called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in filling stations across the FCT, especially in the handling and discharge of petroleum products.

As part of efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, the President proposed collaboration in emergency response drills and safety simulations within organisations across the Territory. He also offered training support and capacity development opportunities for officers of the FCT Fire Service through the Centre for Risk Management in Lagos, the training arm of the Society.

In addition, he stressed the importance of adopting technology and innovation-driven approaches to consolidate the gains already achieved by the Service.

A major highlight of the visit was the presentation of a commemorative compendium of RIMSON to the FCT Fire Service, marking the 40th anniversary of the Risk Managers Society of Nigeria.

In his closing remarks, Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus expressed gratitude to the President and his delegation for the visit and commended the numerous areas by Territory.

FCT FIRE SERVICE ASSURES RESIDENTS OF ADEQUATE FIRE SAFETY DURING SALAH CELEBRATION

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service has reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to ensuring safety and rapid emergency response throughout the forthcoming Salah celebration.

The Assistant Controller General (ACG), Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus , gave this assurance while addressing officers and men of the Service as part of operational preparedness measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property during the festive period.

According to the ACG, the Service has intensified its readiness by strategically deploying firefighting personnel, equipment, and emergency response units across key locations within the FCT. He emphasized that fire stations remain on high alert, with rapid response teams fully mobilized to promptly address any fire-related incidents or emergencies that may arise during the celebrations.

Engr. Zacchaeus further urged residents to adhere strictly to fire safety precautions, particularly in the handling of cooking appliances, electrical installations, and flammable materials, which are often in increased use during festive periods. He also encouraged the public to promptly report any fire outbreak or emergency through established communication channels for swift intervention.

While reiterating the Service’s dedication to its core mandate of protecting lives and property, the ACG called for continued cooperation from members of the public in ensuring a safe and incident-free celebration.

In the spirit of the season, Engr. Zacchaeus extended warm felicitations to all Muslim faithful in the FCT and across Nigeria, wishing them a peaceful, joyous, and safe Salah celebration. He urged all residents to celebrate responsibly and remain vigilant at all times.

REPORT ON THE SUCCESSFUL DECORATION OF THE DIRECTOR, FCT FIRE SERVICE, TO THE RANK OF ASSISTANT CONTROLLER GENERAL ON THE 16TH OF MARCH 2026

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service recorded another significant milestone with the successful decoration of the Director of the Service Engr, Adebayo Zacchaeus from the rank of Controller to that of Assistant Controller General (ACG). The colourful ceremony was performed by the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Adeyemi Olumode FCNA, ACTI

The event attracted several distinguished personalities and dignitaries from across the fire and emergency management community. Among those present was the former Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Dr Ibrahim Liman . Also in attendance was the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, ably represented by Mr. Solomon Abenn , the Director of Security Services of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Adamu B. Gwary, FDC, former DG FEMA Mr. Abass Idris , service chiefs from sister emergency and security agencies, as well as other notable dignitaries.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the official decoration of the newly promoted Assistant Controller General by the Controller General, alongside the decoration of other promoted senior officers of the Service. The ceremony symbolized recognition of dedication, professionalism, and outstanding service within the FCT Fire Service.

In his remarks, the retired Controller General, Ibrahim Liman , commended the leadership and personnel of the FCT Fire Service for their unwavering commitment to duty. He particularly applauded the Service for its strong emphasis on staff capacity development through training both within and outside the Service. He further praised the FCT Fire Service for its remarkable contribution to the growth of the national fire service structure, noting that the Service has produced two Controller Generals of the Federal Fire Service. He recalled that he began his career within the FCT Fire Service in 2002 as Head of Department before eventually rising to lead the Federal Fire Service.

In his address, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Adeyemi Olumode , reiterated many of the key points raised by the retired Controller General. He acknowledged the strategic role played by the FCT Fire Service in shaping the leadership and operational excellence within the national fire service system. The Controller General also noted that he equally began his professional journey in the FCT Fire Service before rising through the ranks to become the number one firefighter in Nigeria.

He encouraged officers and men of the Service to remain committed to their duties and to continue to uphold the values of professionalism, discipline, and selfless service to the nation. He further urged them to sustain the culture of training, teamwork, and operational readiness that has distinguished the Service over the years.

The ceremony concluded with goodwill messages from dignitaries and the taking of group photographs to commemorate the historic occasion. The event served not only as a celebration of career advancement but also as a reaffirmation of the FCT Fire Service’s growing reputation as a hub for excellence and leadership within Nigeria’s fire and emergency management sector.

“If you smell gas, open doors and windows immediately—ventilation first.”

“No switch on/off light, no plug, no phone charging—spark fit ignite gas.”

“If e safe, turn off the cylinder valve.”

“No use flame to check leak. Use soapy water—if bubbles show, leak dey.”

“Use approved regulator and hose. If hose crack or loose, replace am.”

“Keep cylinder upright and in a well-ventilated area—no enclosed cupboard.”

“Keep cylinder away from heat and direct sunlight.”

Fuel Fire Safety Tips (FCT Fire Service Public Notice)

Fuel-related incidents (especially tanker accidents and spills) are extremely dangerous because fuel vapour can ignite instantly—even when you can’t “see” the danger. After any fire outbreak is controlled, the area can still re-ignite.

Safety Tips for the Public

DO NOT scoop fuel from a tanker accident scene or spilled fuel area. No fuel is worth your life.

Stay far back and obey all safety instructions and cordons (tape, cones, barriers).

No smoking and no open flame (matches, lighters, cooking, generators) anywhere near the scene.

Avoid phone torch/charging near spills—keep devices away from fuel vapour zones.

Switch off vehicle engines and do not start or rev engines around the area.

Do not pour water on fuel fires—it can spread the burning fuel. Only trained responders should handle suppression.

Keep children and vulnerable persons away from the scene and do not crowd emergency responders.

Report spills immediately to emergency services; don’t touch, step on, or attempt to “cover” fuel with sand without instruction.

Move upwind if possible (away from strong fuel smell) and keep routes open for fire trucks and rescue teams.

If you notice fresh smoke, heat, strong vapour smell, or flames, move away calmly and call for help immediately.

A Public Rejoinder to the Residents of the Federal Capital Territory

The attention of the FCT Fire Service has been drawn to certain public narratives capable of causing confusion regarding fire safety responsibilities within the Federal Capital Territory. In the interest of clarity, public safety, and trust, it has become necessary to address the good people of the FCT directly.

The FCT Fire Service remains the statutorily mandated authority charged with the responsibility of saving lives and protecting property within the Federal Capital Territory.

With an unmatched operational footprint, the Service maintains thirteen fully functional fire stations within the city centre (FCC) and adjoining satellite towns, and one fire station in each of the Area Councils, ensuring prompt response, local knowledge, and effective coverage across the Territory.

This extensive presence places the FCT Fire Service in a unique position to engage residents, businesses, institutions, and communities in their day-to-day fire safety needs, ranging from emergency response and fire prevention, to inspections, enforcement, training, and public enlightenment.

It is important to clearly state that the recognized leadership of the FCT Fire Service remains unchanged. The Service is under the capable and indefatigable leadership of Engr. Adebayo Zacchaeus, Controller of the FCT Fire Service.
