Over the years, Nigeria has made important strides in the fight against malaria.

Expanded access to insecticide-treated nets, improved diagnosis and treatment, seasonal malaria chemoprevention for children, and stronger community engagement are helping to save lives and protect millions of families across the country.

These efforts are proof that progress is possible when commitment meets action.

However, many children and families are still at risk. To defeat malaria, we must accelerate the gains we have made and push even harder.

That is why the World Malaria Day 2026 comes with a renewed sense of urgency and determination.

This year’s theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can, Now We Must.” - reminds us that the tools, knowledge, and partnerships needed to end malaria already exist.

What is required now is stronger commitment, sustained action, and collective responsibility.

From government leaders and health workers to communities, partners, and individuals, everyone has a role to play in driving malaria out of Nigeria.

The call is simple and powerful:
Let’s do it!
Let’s invest more to end malaria.
Let's sleep inside the insecticide treated nets.
Let’s test before treating fever.
Let’s protect our children and pregnant women.
Let’s strengthen prevention and community action.
Together, we can turn progress into victory and end malaria for good.

🦟 Ending Malaria: Saving Lives in Kogi & the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In Nigeria, children under five and pregnant women remain the most vulnerable to the devastating impact of malaria. We are changing that narrative. Through the Support to Malaria Elimination Project (SMEP), funded by the Islamic Development Bank, Famkris Healthcare Initiative (FHCI) is delivering measurable progress in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kogi State. Our mission is clear: reduce malaria deaths and strengthen our health systems.

Here’s what we are doing on the ground for malaria prevention and treatment.

🎯 Prevention & Diagnosis: Free medication for malaria prevention in pregnant women are available during antenatal care visits. Free malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) provided across public health facilities for patients with fever.
🎯 Free Treatment: Treatment of confirmed cases with free Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) drugs for uncomplicated malaria and injectable Artesunate for severe cases.
🎯 Capacity Building: We have trained 276 health workers to improve diagnosis and case management.
🎯 Accountability: We’ve deployed 294 feedback boxes and toll-free lines to ensure every patient’s voice is heard.

This initiative isn’t just about medicine; it’s about aligning with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) to ensure a malaria-free Nigeria by 2030.

Advancing Malaria Advocacy and Action Date: December 9, 2021 Yesterday, the FCT ACSM Core Group held a productive follow-up meeting, the first since November 14, 2024. The session gathered stakeholders from various organization like religious leaders, area council roll back malaria focal persons and health educators across the six 6 area councils to review the Terms of Reference (ToR) and strengthen the ACSM framework for the FCT Malaria Elimination Programme.

🔍 Key Highlights:

✅ Review of ACSM Tor:
Members revisited roles and responsibilities to align with the updated ACSM structure, promoting:
• Effective advocacy and policy involvement
• Sustainable resource mobilisation
• Increased demand for malaria commodities
• Promotion of treatment guidelines at health facilities

✅ Addressing Challenges: Concerns about the illegal sale of free malaria testing and treatment drugs in some health facilities were discussed. Suitable sanctions will be implemented early next year.

✅ Urban & Peri-Urban Strategies: The group explored ways to reach underserved populations, foster health equity, and ensure access to malaria services.

✅ Work Plan: A detailed work plan for the year was agreed upon. Updated Tor will be circulated for review and approval at the state level.

We remain dedicated to eradicating malaria in the FCT through coordinated efforts, accountability, and community engagement.
