SGF PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY COMMISSION

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening fiscal governance, transparency and accountability through greater support for the Fiscal Responsibility Commission.

Senator Akume gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the Acting Chairman of the Commission, Barrister Charles Chukwuemeka Abana, and members of the Commission's management team in Abuja.

The SGF commended the Commission's role in promoting prudent management of public resources and advancing the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda. He also praised its collaboration with anti-corruption and oversight agencies in strengthening accountability and institutional integrity.

Senator Akume assured the Commission of government support in addressing its operational needs, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms would further improve fiscal governance across public institutions.

Earlier, Barrister Abana briefed the SGF on reforms introduced since assuming office. He said the Commission has intensified revenue monitoring and enforcement of compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility Act among government-owned enterprises and revenue-generating ministries, departments and agencies.

According to him, the Commission facilitated remittances of about one-point-eight-four trillion naira into government coffers as of September 2025, while more than seven hundred and sixty billion naira has already been remitted between January and May this year. He added that the Commission is targeting two-point-five trillion naira in independent revenue for 2026.

Barrister Abana also announced the completion of a revised Operating Surplus Computation Template, which is being automated to improve fiscal oversight, with its official presentation scheduled for July 28 in Abuja.

He said the Commission has unveiled a new three-year strategic plan focused on institutional reforms, stakeholder engagement, capacity building and the adoption of global best practices in fiscal governance.

The Acting Chairman further disclosed that the Commission is expanding collaboration with agencies including the EFCC, ICPC, Code of Conduct Bureau, Bureau of Public Procurement and the Office of the Auditor-General to strengthen enforcement of fiscal responsibility laws.

He also reiterated the Commission's commitment to amending the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 to reflect current fiscal realities and improve compliance and enforcement.

Barrister Abana appealed for the SGF's continued support in securing a permanent office, replacing retired staff and providing operational vehicles and digital forensic tools to enhance the Commission's effectiveness.

In a related development, the Executive Chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), Victor Muruako, Esq., led a delegation of his staff to the 2025 International Anti-Corruption Day event organized by the Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) comprising Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Agencies.

FRC, ICPC SEAL HISTORIC ANTI-CORRUPTION ALLIANCE ON INTERNATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION DAY

In a landmark move to deepen transparency and strengthen the fight against corruption in Nigeria, the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), on International Anti-Corruption Day, signed a far-reaching Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting institutional synergy and accountability in public finance management.
The Executive Chairman of the FRC, Mr. Victor Muruako, and the Executive Chairman of the ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, expressed profound satisfaction over the partnership, describing the signing as timely and symbolic, coming on a day dedicated globally to integrity, transparency, and the fight against corruption.
Speaking at the ceremony, both chairmen reaffirmed their agencies’ shared commitment to promoting prudent management of Nigeria’s resources, enforcing fiscal discipline, and confronting corruption and financial mismanagement through coordinated strategies.
Under the MoU, both agencies will collaborate extensively in capacity building, joint investigations, information sharing, asset recovery, and enforcement operations. The ICPC, through its Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), will provide specialized training to FRC staff in areas such as forensic investigations, financial crime detection, digital evidence recovery, and prosecution strategies. In turn, both agencies will exchange resource persons for workshops and public enlightenment programmes.
The agreement further empowers both institutions to conduct joint investigations and coordinated operations where violations cut across the mandates of both the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007 and the ICPC Act, 2000. It also establishes a framework for mutual assistance in tracing, freezing, confiscating, and recovering stolen public funds.
On information sharing, the MoU guarantees the confidential exchange of intelligence, financial records, and technical data, while upholding strict ethical standards and full compliance with all applicable laws.
According to the parties, the collaboration will significantly enhance Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture by eliminating institutional silos and strengthening enforcement outcomes.
The Memorandum of Understanding, which can be terminated with a 30-day notice by either party, marks a renewed and expanded phase of cooperation between the two key integrity institutions.
The signing ceremony concluded with both chairmen reaffirming their resolve to work tirelessly to promote accountability, transparency, and sustainable national development in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and existing anti-corruption laws.
