RMAFC, ALGON Deepen Partnership to Strengthen Local Government Autonomy and Grassroots Development.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to advance local government autonomy, improve fiscal governance, and accelerate sustainable grassroots development across the country.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by a delegation of RMAFC Federal Commissioners, led by Hon. Aliyu Abdulkadir, Federal Commissioner representing Nasarawa State and Chairman of the State and Local Government Monitoring Committee, to the National President of ALGON, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal, at the Association’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of RMAFC, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, OFR, PhD, Hon. Abdulkadir explained that the newly inaugurated State and Local Government Monitoring Committee was established to strengthen engagement with local governments and identify practical measures for improving governance and service delivery at the grassroots.

He noted that, as a constitutional body, RMAFC is mandated to monitor the accrual and disbursement of revenues from the Federation Account, including allocations due to local governments. He assured ALGON that the Commission remains committed to ensuring the effective implementation of the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on local government financial autonomy.

Hon. Abdulkadir also encouraged local governments to intensify efforts toward boosting internally generated revenue (IGR), stressing that greater financial independence would reduce overreliance on federal allocations and enhance sustainable development.

RMAFC, ALGON Deepen Partnership to Strengthen Local Government Autonomy and Grassroots Development.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to advance local government autonomy, improve fiscal governance, and accelerate sustainable grassroots development across the country.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by a delegation of RMAFC Federal Commissioners, led by Hon. Aliyu Abdulkadir, Federal Commissioner representing Nasarawa State and Chairman of the State and Local Government Monitoring Committee, to the National President of ALGON, Hon. (Engr.) Also speaking, Sen. Marafa Bashir Abba, Federal Commissioner representing Taraba State and Vice Chairman of the State and Local Government Monitoring Committee, said the engagement would provide valuable insights to improve the Committee's operations and strengthen collaboration with ALGON in addressing key challenges facing local governments, including issues relating to local government elections.

In his response, ALGON National President, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal, welcomed the initiative, describing the visit as timely and significant for the future of grassroots governance in Nigeria.

"When you empower local governments, you empower the entire nation because local government is where the people truly live," he said.

He further emphasized that strong and autonomous local governments remain the foundation for national development, adding that meaningful progress can only be achieved when the third tier of government is adequately empowered.

Hon. Bello advocated for greater involvement of local governments in revenue allocation discussions and reaffirmed ALGON's commitment to working closely with RMAFC in promoting capacity building, fiscal discipline, transparency, accountability, and the prudent management of public resources.

Members of the RMAFC delegation included Hon. Kabeer Muhammed Usman (Gombe State), Hon. Madu Ali Juluri (Yobe State), Hon. Rabiu Garba (Zamfara State), and Hon. (Amb.) Jacob Ayuba Mbako, Federal Commissioner representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The meeting underscores the shared commitment of RMAFC and ALGON to fostering stronger institutional collaboration, enhancing fiscal accountability, promoting local government autonomy, and ensuring that increased public resources translate into meaningful development and improved service delivery for communities across Nigeria.

Preparatory Briefing Ahead of ALGON e-Birth Registration Training in Sokoto State

As part of the preparations for the forthcoming Training of Trainers (ToT) and Capacity Building Programme on the ALGON e-Birth Registration Initiative in Sokoto State, the ALGON National Project Coordinator on e-Birth Registration, Ms. Latifah Aspitah Isah, FCAI, held a strategic engagement with the ALGON Chairman of Sokoto State, who also serves as the Executive Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Area and the APC House of Representatives Candidate, alongside other Local Government Chairmen in Abuja.

The meeting provided a strategic platform to align stakeholders on the objectives, expectations, and implementation framework for the upcoming training of LGA Focal Point Persons and Ward Registrars. Discussions centered on strengthening collaboration, ensuring participants’ readiness, and reinforcing the commitment of Local Government leadership to the successful rollout of the e-Birth Registration programme across Sokoto State.

*ALGON NATIONAL PRESIDENT, HON. BELLO LAWAL FELICITATES MUSLIM FAITHFUL ACROSS 774 LOCAL GOVERNMENTS AND AREA COUNCILS, CALLS FOR UNFAILING TRUST IN GOD*

*Abuja*-
As Muslims worldwide commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, *Hon. Bello Lawal*, has extended warm felicitations to Muslim faithful across the 774 Local Government Areas and Area Councils of the federation.

In his Eid-el-Maulud message, Hon. Lawal said the celebration “reminds us of the enduring virtues of compassion, humility, justice and service to humanity exemplified by the Prophet.”

He noted that at a time when Nigerians at the grassroots face economic and security challenges, those same values provide local communities a pathway to healing, unity and renewed hope.

“Our 774 Local Governments and Area Councils are the closest tier of government to the people. This season calls on us as leaders and citizens to reject division, embrace tolerance, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that hold our communities together,” he said.

Hon. Lawal urged the Muslim Ummah to use the blessed occasion to offer special prayers for peace, security, prosperity and good governance at the local level, adding that “development begins from the grassroots.”

He further called on Nigerians to place unfailing trust in God, stressing that “despite our present trials, Nigeria remains a nation blessed with immense talent, resilience and divine promise. With faith and collective effort, our local governments will deliver the dividends of democracy to every ward and village.”

“May Almighty Allah accept our prayers, bless our families and communities, protect our nation, and grant wisdom and courage to all leaders serving at every level,” he concluded.
