BREAKING - Osun Polls: IHRC Activates Election Observation Situation Room Amid Violence Reports
The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Corporation/INTERPOL Center USA, Nigeria Mission, has activated its Election Observation Situation Room at its Abuja Headquarters to coordinate its accredited media observation of the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election.
The development comes amid reports of violence, intimidation and other incidents of concern emerging in connection with the electoral process.
As an INEC-accredited media observer, IHRC is exercising its recognised observation and reporting mandate to monitor the conduct of the election, document credible incidents and assess developments from a human-rights and democratic-governance perspective.
Speaking on the activation, Head of Diplomatic Mission, IHRC Corporation/INTERPOL Center USA, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Duru Hezekiah, said the Situation Room reflects the Commission’s responsibility as an international human-rights organisation participating in the electoral observation process.
“As an accredited media observer, IHRC has a responsibility to observe, document and report. Our Situation Room provides the coordination platform from which we can responsibly monitor developments and pay particular attention to the protection of human rights, peace and the safety of citizens.”
He stressed that the Situation Room is not an alternative election management or security centre, but an independent observation and coordination mechanism through which IHRC officials can collate field reports, verify information and escalate credible concerns through appropriate channels.
Ambassador Duru called on political actors, security agencies, election officials and citizens to exercise restraint, warning that violence, intimidation and threats to citizens’ safety have no place in a democratic election.
IHRC’s participation in the Osun election is specifically undertaken through its Official Press Department, an independent media and public-interest reporting platform within the organisation, with a mandate to monitor, investigate, document and report matters of public interest, including human-rights concerns and democratic processes.
Consequently, IHRC is participating in the Osun election in its capacity as an INEC-accredited Media Observer through which the Commission is positioned to independently monitor developments, receive and verify field reports, document incidents and bring credible issues of public concern to appropriate institutional and public attention, while maintaining the principles of impartiality, accuracy and non-interference in the electoral process.
The IHRC Election Observation Situation Room therefore serves as an internal media-monitoring, verification, coordination and reporting centre, not an election management, enforcement or parallel results centre.
