Dr. Stella Adadevoh: The Woman Who Saved Nigeria from Ebola

In 2014, West Africa faced one of its deadliest threats—the Ebola virus outbreak. Fear spread faster than the disease, and the world braced for catastrophe.

But in Nigeria, a single doctor’s courage and quick judgment changed the nation’s destiny. Her name was Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh.

When a Liberian-American diplomat, Patrick Sawyer, arrived in Lagos showing symptoms of Ebola, the pressure was enormous. Officials urged Dr. Adadevoh to let him travel freely.

She refused.

She defied diplomatic immunity, quarantined him, and in doing so, stopped Ebola from spreading through Africa’s most populous city.

“She sacrificed her life so millions of Nigerians could live.”

Her decision cost her everything. Dr. Adadevoh contracted Ebola and died in service. But her bravery contained an epidemic that could have devastated Nigeria—and possibly the world.
