Tension in Taraba APC Over Alleged Plot to Write Primary Results Overnight

Tension and uncertainty continue to trail the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in Taraba State as delegates and party members await clear directives on how the exercise will be conducted across the state. Party officials reportedly arrived at the Danbaba Suntai Airport in Jalingo at about 3:30pm, but several hours later, no official guideline or process for the primaries had been communicated to stakeholders.

The development has sparked growing concerns among party faithful, with allegations emerging that some state party officials, alongside the Governor, may be plotting to manipulate the exercise by allegedly compiling and announcing results overnight without allowing for a transparent voting process. The claims have heightened anxiety among aspirants and supporters who insist that the integrity of the primaries must be protected.

Concerned members of the party have now called on the national leadership of the APC to urgently intervene and ensure that the primaries are conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner. They stressed that democracy within the party must be upheld and that the voices of party members across Taraba State should not be suppressed through any form of alleged manipulation or imposition.

Observers say the atmosphere in Jalingo remains tense as delegates, aspirants, and supporters continue to monitor developments surrounding the exercise. Many party members maintain that the credibility of the APC in Taraba State ahead of future elections will depend largely on how transparent and inclusive the primary election process turns out to be.

Recent statements—including those made in the not-so-recent past—by US Government officials, their surrogates, and other persons acting in their interests, regarding Nigeria’s security architecture and the removal of certain individuals based on their own perception and preference, constitute a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and must cease forthwith.

The era of colonialism, during which superpowers would conquer nations and dictate to their peoples how they were to be governed, is a long-past chapter of our bitter history—one we have no desire to revisit or repeat.

Those colonialists systematically bastardised our institutions, undermined our traditional pillars of authority, and deliberately fuelled the divisions that lie at the root of many of the security challenges we continue to face as a nation today.

The recent comments by one Kimberly Daniels, an ex-prostitute, ex-drug user, with an ethically soiled political career in the US—who claims the title of Chairwoman of the United World Congress of Diplomats—calling for the removal or redeployment of Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, are an insult and a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty. They are, in every respect, deeply disrespectful of this country and its leadership.

This is to say nothing of the fact that, despite the globally acknowledged failures of the United States in its foreign policy engagements across multiple theatres, the Nigerian Government has at no point presumed to call for the removal of any American official or leader.

It is equally a matter of record that Dr. Bello Matawalle has played a crucial and decisive role in advancing Nigeria’s security objectives, producing outcomes that are both measurable and strategically significant. Only recently, when the nation was confronted with the crisis of a mass kidnapping in Kebbi State, it was Dr. Bello Matawalle whom the President personally dispatched to coordinate the rescue operation. He delivered: those students were brought home safely. That is the record of the man whose removal is being demanded.

We therefore find it not only presumptuous but deeply amusing that a nonentity such as Daniels would presume to instruct Nigeria—a sovereign nation, the largest economy on the African continent, and home to the largest armed forces in the sub-region—to redeploy or remove a serving Minister on the nebulous grounds of “integrity.”

We take this opportunity to remind Kimberly Daniels to confine herself to her constituency in Florida and to keep well away from matters of national security that are, by any reasonable measure, far above her pay grade. It is particularly troubling that this individual, who presents herself as the Chairwoman of the World Congress of Diplomats, appears to lack even a rudimentary understanding of the foundational principles of diplomacy—chief among them, the respect owed to sovereign nations and their duly appointed officials.

We call on all sovereign nations—particularly those in the West—to engage with fellow nations on the basis of respect, not condescension. Nigeria is a sovereign country and will not stand by while loose-mouthed officials disrespect its leadership or its sovereignty.
