The 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Northern Surveyors Forum commenced 4th December and scheduled to end today, 7th December at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Yola. This year’s AGM, themed “Bringing on the New: Geospatial Applications in Governance,” brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and professionals to discuss strategies for advancing Nigeria’s geospatial and surveying sectors.
In his address, Chief Dr. Edgar Sunday, Chief of Staff to the Governor of Adamawa State, who represented the Governor of Yola State, stated that, “We are expanding infrastructure, improving GIS capacity, strengthening physical planning, and promoting sustainable development across our towns and cities. As Surveyors, you are not only professionals—you are partners in nation-building.”
He emphasized that surveyors play a critical role in ensuring accuracy and supporting the government’s developmental reforms.
Delivering his goodwill message, the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Surv. Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, represented by Surv. Olugbemiro Olakunle, Registrar of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON), said; “I congratulate the Chairman of the Northern Surveyors Forum, Surv. Dr. Isah Funtua Abdulkadir, on this special occasion of the AGM. I also commend every member who has come from far and near to make this event a success. It is our hope that the discussions and presentations at this forum will propel the profession toward the transformational shift we all desire.”
In his address, the President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Surv. P.C. Eze, described the late Surv. J.D.J. Dashe as a beacon of integrity and intellectual excellence whose legacy continues to inspire surveyors nationwide. He said that “Geospatial application in governance is remarkable, as we are living in a time where governance is no longer guesswork but driven by precision. As Nigeria grapples with the complexities of resource management and national security, the solution lies in the wealth of geospatial intelligence. Geospatial intelligence is the bedrock of modern governance.”
The AGM and the memorial lecture addressed critical challenges facing the surveying sector, including technological gaps and outdated practices, while exploring solutions to enhance the quality of geospatial data for effective decision-making. Stakeholders reaffirmed the vital role of geospatial information in governance, infrastructure development, environmental management, and disaster resilience. The AGM emphasized the necessity of innovation, inclusiveness, and sustained investment in the geospatial sector to meet the demands of the 21st century.
