NAEC,NARSDA Forge Stronger Partnership to Advance Nigeria 's Nuclear Power Programne.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr. Anthony Inalegwu Godwin Ekedegwa, has called for stronger collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to harness space science and satellite technology in support of Nigeria's Nuclear Power Programme.

The Chairman made the call during a courtesy visit to the Director General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the Agency's Headquarters in Abuja.

Engr. Dr. Ekedegwa explained that NAEC is committed to the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology to drive Nigeria's socio-economic development, with the Nuclear Power Programme serving as a key initiative to improve electricity generation and strengthen the nation's energy security.

He noted that the Commission is seeking NASRDA's technical expertise in geo-mapping, geo-monitoring, Earth observation, satellite imagery and other space-based technologies that will support the planning, site characterization, environmental monitoring and implementation of the Nuclear Power Programme.

According to him, leveraging NASRDA's capabilities will enhance data-driven decision-making and reinforce the use of advanced technologies in delivering strategic national infrastructure projects.

Responding, the Director General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, welcomed the NAEC delegation and expressed the Agency's readiness to collaborate with the Commission in advancing Nigeria's Nuclear Power Programme.

He stated that NASRDA possesses the technical expertise and space-based technologies required to provide geospatial data, satellite imagery, Earth observation and other critical information that will support the planning, monitoring and implementation of the project.

Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration and leveraging their respective technical competencies to advance the peaceful application of nuclear science and space technology for national development.

NAEC Chairman Pays Working Visit to the Honourable Minister of Power

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, in Abuja.

The visit was aimed at briefing the Honourable Minister on the progress of the Nigeria Nuclear Power Programme (NNPP), presenting the roadmap for the next phase of its implementation, and strengthening inter-agency collaboration towards the successful delivery of the programme.

In his opening remarks, Engr. Dr. Ekedegwa emphasized that the successful implementation of Nigeria's Nuclear Power Programme is a national undertaking that requires the active participation, cooperation, and sustained commitment of all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The Chairman further requested the Ministry's support in providing access to relevant technical, scientific, environmental, socio-economic, infrastructure, geospatial, regulatory, and other critical data within its mandate. He explained that the information would support the ongoing review of the Nuclear Site Evaluation Report and preparations for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Mission scheduled for 2027.

In his response, the Honourable Minister welcomed the delegation and commended NAEC for its efforts in advancing Nigeria's Nuclear Power Programme. He assured the Commission of the Ministry's full cooperation and commitment to providing the requested information and technical support.

He reaffirmed the Ministry's readiness to work closely with NAEC to ensure the successful implementation of the nation's nuclear power aspirations.

NAEC Chairman Receives Letter of Appointment:

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, on Friday, 24th July 2026, officially received his letter of appointment as the Substantive Chairman from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF)

The appointment letter was presented to him by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO) Dr.Ibrahim Abubakar Kana on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The presentation underscores the Federal Government’s confidence in his capacity to provide visionary leadership and drive the mandate of NAEC in advancing Nigeria’s peaceful nuclear program.

This marks the formal commencement of his tenure to pilot the affairs of the Commission.

Abuja, Nigeria – July 21, 2026

The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) is pleased to announce the confirmation by Mr.Predident of the appointment of Engr. Dr. Anthony Inalegwu Godwin Ekedegwa as the substantive Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission.

The appointment was approved by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on 20 July 2026, and takes immediate effect.

The appointment reflects the Federal Government's continued commitment to strengthening the institutional capacity of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission in the discharge of its statutory mandate of promoting the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology for national development.

Engr. Dr. Ekedegwa is a seasoned nuclear engineer and administrator with extensive experience in nuclear science, technology, research, policy development, and institutional leadership. His appointment comes at a critical period as Nigeria continues to deepen its commitment to energy security, technological innovation, industrial development, healthcare, agriculture, environmental protection, and other socio-economic sectors through the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

NAEC Hosts Nuclear Medicine Society to Strengthen Collaboration

The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) recently received a delegation from the Nigeria Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging led by Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.

The Society commended NAEC’s role in developing nuclear medicine in Nigeria over the last 20 years and presented five key areas for partnership. These include collaboration on IAEA technical projects, support under the IAEA “Rays of Hope” Initiative to address gaps in nuclear medicine equipment nationwide, expanded training for nuclear physicians and medical physicists, joint research, and support for the Society’s planned maiden edition of its Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Abuja this October.

Responding, the Acting Chairman of NAEC, Engr. (Dr.) Anthony Ekedegwa, welcomed the partnership but stressed the need for indigenous capacity building and greater commitment from government hospitals. He noted funding challenges and IAEA arrears as major constraints. The Head of International Cooperation and Liaison, Engr. Awwal Bisallah, added that IAEA projects must be driven by institutions and urged the Society to engage the government through the Federal Ministry of Health to address facility and manpower gaps.

Both parties agreed to deepen collaboration to advance nuclear medicine services across Nigeria.

NAEC Chairman Participates at the 37th AFRA Technical Working Group Meeting in Rabat , Morocco

The Acting Chairman/CEO of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr.Anthony Ekedegwa, is participating in the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA) Technical Working Group Meeting currently taking place in Rabat, Morocco.

The meeting, which commenced on Monday, 15 June 2026, is being hosted by the National Center for Energy, Nuclear Science and Technology (CNESTEN) and will conclude on Friday, 19 June 2026.

The Technical Working Group is focused on reviewing the AFRA Regional Cooperative Framework and assessing progress in the application of nuclear science and technology across key sectors, including food security, healthcare, agriculture, nuclear and radiation safety, knowledge management, and education.

The gathering brings together experts and representatives from AFRA Member States to strengthen regional cooperation and chart a common path for the peaceful utilization of nuclear science and technology in Africa.

AFRA Member States work closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency under its Technical Cooperation Programme to advance the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology for sustainable socio-economic development across the continent.

NAEC, FUT Minna Sign MOU to Advance Nuclear Science and Engineering Training in Nigeria

The Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) have formalized a partnership to develop nuclear science and engineering programs in Nigeria through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The signing ceremony which took place at NAEC Headquarters on May 25, 2026, marks the culmination of months of collaboration between both institutions.

Under the MOU, both parties will collaborate on teaching, research, and training. Key areas include curriculum development, joint research initiatives, exchange of students and staff, co-supervision of students, collaborative publications, and grant applications. FUT Minna students will also gain access to NAEC’s laboratories and facilities at the Nuclear Technology Centre in Sheda for hands-on training.

The Acting Chairman of NAEC, Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, noted that the partnership aligns with the Commission’s mandate to train 2,000 qualified nuclear scientists and engineers for Nigeria’s nuclear energy program. He emphasized that building indigenous capacity is critical for sustainability, adding that NAEC experts will support FUT Minna with lectures and training until the university develops full internal capacity.

The Vice Chancellor of FUT Minna, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, explained further that such collaboration can help address national challenges in energy, food security, and natural resource management using indigenous technology. He highlighted plans for staff and student exchange program and for NAEC to guide the development of the 30% of the new curriculum.

The Head of International Cooperation and Liaison, Mr. Awwal Bisallah, also noted that the partnership could position Nigeria to serve as a regional center of excellence, similar to established programs in Ghana and Kenya, while also encouraging the University to optimize the use of NAEC’s state-of-the-art research equipment.

Both teams described the MOU as a step towards strengthening Nigeria’s nuclear workforce and advancing the country’s role in Africa’s nuclear development.

Nigeria Joins African Leaders at High-Level Nuclear Energy Summit in Kigali:

Kigali is hosting hundreds of delegates, policymakers, investors, and industry leaders for Africa’s second Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa (NEISA), taking place from May 18–21 at the Kigali Convention Centre,Rwanda.
Held under the theme, “Powering Africa’s Future: Turning Nuclear Energy Ambition into Investable Reality,” the summit brings together African leaders and global energy stakeholders to discuss nuclear energy investment, innovation, and sustainable development across the continent.
Officially opening the summit, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame emphasized the importance of energy in driving Africa’s economic transformation.
“For Africa, energy is not simply a development issue, it is the foundation of industrial growth and competitiveness,” Kagame stated.
The event is attended by President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé of Togo, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi.
Discussions at the summit are focused on financing strategies, policy direction, and deployment pathways for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Micro Modular Reactors (MMRs), technologies considered safer, scalable, and better suited for African energy needs.
President Kagame noted that international attitudes toward nuclear financing are shifting rapidly.
“Last year, the World Bank decided to end the ban on financing nuclear power projects. At COP28, governments called on international financing institutions to include nuclear energy in their portfolios. Now is the time to work together to make this shift urgently in Africa,” he said.
Rwanda recently unveiled plans for a $5–6 billion nuclear power plant expected to become operational by the early 2030s. Kagame revealed that Rwanda has successfully completed Phase One of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review, confirming the country remains on track toward its nuclear energy goals.
He also highlighted Africa’s growing workforce as a major opportunity for future economic growth if properly supported with infrastructure and energy development.
Nigeria was represented at the summit by the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and IAEA National Liaison Officer, Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, alongside Mr. Sylvester Galadima of the Research and Nuclear Infrastructure Directorate, NAEC.
