THE TRAVELER [ a riddle poem ]

I'm off to see the world
to be significant
to play a part
in making history
in making others smile
in one form or another
for at least a little while.

I will be held close and loved
bringing joy and laughter,
I will be mistreated and used
and perhaps carelessly abandoned...

Going from master to master
slightly worse for the wear
but still able to shine and sparkle;
hopefully I don't get lost
or waylaid for too long.
But who am I without you?
Hold me tight but not for long,
sense my possibilities
and feel my power.

I may just be passing through
or locked away in prisons for a time
in darkness or in solitude
with others a lot like me,
cold and naked
but tough as nails,
a traveler born to see the world
waiting for my time
to make a difference
whether or not I shine.

More travelers will always be born
to make their mark upon the world,
yet I will survive famine or tempest,
I will be your friend
even if you are not mine,
only grant me this desire --
spare me from the raging fire!
