Kids Cove

Kids Cove Kids Cove is a community based group. For now, we conduct community storytime in FooChou Park twice a month, usually on the second and fourth Sunday 5.15pm.

Kids Cove currently is a registered local business centre. We operate like a mini library where there are variety of picture books in different languages for you to explore by yourself, with your love one, with peers, or even with our staff. We have picture book sharing sessions at particular time every week where our staff will be sharing about different picture books, action rhymes/songs, and art and craft which is related to the picture book shared.

Thanks to the rain yesterday, the haze condition was much better today, so we were happy to proceed with our Storytime at Foo Chow Park.

The park was unusually quiet this evening. Unlike our usual gatherings, there were only a few people walking and jogging around. But the families who came were our familiar story friendsโ€”some of whom were especially disappointed when we had to cancel our previous Storytime because of the haze. It was so nice to see them back again!

This evening, we shared one Chinese story and one English story together. After the stories, our little story friends seemed determined to make up for the disappointment of the previous cancellation! ๐Ÿ˜‚ They couldn't wait to start playing.

Faith brought along some cooking toys, and soon the children were busy with their own little pretend-play kitchen in the park. Of course, no gathering is complete without their favourite hide-and-seek and tag games! Before long, they were running around the park, laughing and chasing one another.

Sometimes, Storytime is about the stories we read. Sometimes, it's simply about having a place where children can meet, play, and enjoy being together.

We hope the weather will be kind to us next month, so we can continue reading, playing, and spending our evenings together at the park.

And with the school holidays just around the corner, everyone was already excited and looking forward to a little break!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: NO STORYTIME THIS EVENING!!! NO STORYTIME!

Since this morning, we have been experiencing a strong haze, and even while staying indoors, we could already feel and smell the poor air quality. Perhaps because Yue and I are more sensitive to the haze, we have been especially aware of the unpleasant smell and the condition of the air today.

It was honestly a difficult decision to make. We kept hoping that the air quality would improve, but after considering everything carefully, we have finally decided to cancel today's Storytime.

We are truly sorry to all our story friends who had already made plans to come and join us this evening. ๐Ÿ’› We know some of you may have been looking forward to our gathering, and we sincerely apologise for the last-minute cancellation.

Our Storytime can wait, but everyone's health and safety come first. ๐ŸŒฟ

This evening's Storytime turned out to be a little differentโ€”and a very special one.

I had a last-minute trip to Miri this weekend, and thankfully, Dorina kindly agreed to take over the session. Knowing that Storytime could continue even when I wasn't around gave me so much peace of mind. After all, our Storytime has always been about the community, not about one person.

As it turned out, our trip ended earlier than expected, and we managed to make it back just in time. It was such a rare and precious opportunity for me to simply sit back, relax, and be a listener. I truly enjoyed experiencing Storytime from the other side.

Faith kicked off the evening by spontaneously sharing the story of Cocoโ€”without a book! She confidently retold the story from memory and even sang some of the songs she mentioned along the way. It was such a delightful surprise and showed how stories can live in our hearts long.

Dalinda then shared I'm Sorry. It led to a wonderful discussion among both the children and the adults about what it means to be a good friend. The answers were all different. Some thought a good friend is someone who shares the same interests. Others believed a good friend is someone who listens to your advice. There wasn't a right or wrong answer, but it reminded us that friendship means different things to different people.

Faith then returned to share another story, this time reading aloud from her Zootopia storybook. It was lovely to see her becoming more confident each time she stands in front to share.

To end the evening, Dorina introduced a picture book titled I'm Not Cute! Before opening the book, she simply showed everyone the cover and asked, "Who do you think this character is? Is it cute?" The children eagerly acted out the expressions and poses shown on the endpapers, filling the pavilion with laughter before the story had even begun. As the story unfolded, we discovered that things weren't always what they seemed. A fox looked like a dog, a squirrel resembled a kangaroo, and many other animals looked completely different from what we expected. The unexpected illustrations had both the children and adults laughing together throughout the story.

Although our group was smaller this evening, it made the gathering feel even more intimate. After Storytime, we all sat in a circle and enjoyed the freshly baked cupcakes lovingly prepared by Elaine Ting. With most of the children being older, our little tea break was calm, relaxing, and filled with easy conversations.

Dalinda had also brought along a cooking play set, and before long, the childrenโ€”and even our adult storytellerโ€”were happily immersed in imaginative role play together. It was a beautiful reminder that play has no age limit.

Of course, before heading home, the children couldn't resist one last game of chasing each other around the park. Some traditions simply can't be skipped.

As we chatted, we also found ourselves talking about several of our story friends whom we haven't seen in quite some time. We truly miss all of you.

We hope August will be a month of reunion, with familiar faces returning and perhaps a few new ones joining us too. After all, Storytime is always a little warmer when our community gathers together.

*Yesterday evening, we had another wonderful Storytime at Foo Chow Park. Although it was a smaller gathering, it turned out to be a very special one. To our surprise, most of our story friends were upper primary children. It was refreshing to have an older group, as it allowed us to have deeper discussions throughout the stories.

I began by sharing two picture books. The first story led us into a meaningful conversation about empathy and kindness. We talked about how being kind isn't only about treating our friends wellโ€”it also means showing patience, understanding, and love to the people closest to us, especially our own family members. It was heartening to hear the children share their thoughts and experiences, reminding us that picture books often open doors to conversations far beyond the pages themselves.

Faith then took over with her own story. Interestingly, her story balanced the discussion beautifully. While kindness is important, her book also reminded us that we don't always have to say "yes" just to please everyone. It is equally important to have our own thoughts, make wise decisions, and stay true to ourselves. I was especially proud of Faith yesterday. She has clearly been reflecting on previous sharing sessions and made a conscious effort to improve the way she held the book so everyone could see the illustrations more clearly. Her story was quite long, but she thoughtfully summarised parts of it to help everyone follow along. It was wonderful to see her growing not only as a reader but also as a storyteller who thinks about her audience.

To end the evening on a lighter note, I shared a hilarious picture book that filled the pavilion with laughter. After the thoughtful discussions from the earlier stories, it was the perfect ending to leave everyone smiling.

Then came one of our favourite traditions. Elaine surprised everyone with a refreshing homemade drinkโ€”cold passion fruit with lemon juice. On such a warm evening, it was incredibly cooling and refreshing, and everyone, both children and adults, thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you, Elaine, for always taking such good care of our Storytime family. ๐Ÿ’›

As always, once the stories were over, the children couldn't wait to run off and play around the park, while the adults stayed behind to catch up, chat, and share about life.

Sometimes, the number of people isn't what makes a Storytime memorable. It's the conversations we have, the stories we share, the friendships we continue to build, and the simple joy of spending an evening together in the park. July Storytime is Here! ๐Ÿ“–

A new month means another opportunity to gather, share stories, and spend a beautiful evening together at Foo Chow Park.

Whether you're one of our regular story friends or you've never joined us before, you are always welcome. Bring your family, bring your favourite picture book (if you'd like to share!), or simply come with an open heart and enjoy an hour of stories together.

โฐ A little reminder to everyone: Please try to arrive on time! We begin each Storytime with our warm-up song and activities before diving into the stories. We'd hate for you to miss the fun beginning, and it also helps create a smoother and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Our Storytime is never just about books. It's about building a community where children and adults can listen, imagine, share, laugh, and grow together. After the stories, the children get to enjoy what they do bestโ€”running, exploring, and playing freely in the park while the adults catch up with one another.

Last Sunday, we returned to Foo Chow Park for our usual Storytime. At 5:15pm, the park was still quiet and empty, and for a moment we wondered if the earlier rain had kept everyone away. However, between 5:15pm and 5:30pm, we were pleasantly surprised as familiar families slowly arrived one after another. It was such a heartwarming sight to see so many of our regular story friends gathering again in our usual little corner of the park.

To make up for Father's Day, which we had missed the previous week, I shared two picture books: ใ€Šๆˆ‘็ˆธ็ˆธ่ถ…ๅŽ‰ๅฎณ็š„ใ€‹ and Mr. Large in Charge. The second story, in particular, brought plenty of smiles and laughter from the mummies. It humorously portrays a father who loves to take charge of everything, believing he always knows best. While the story is full of funny moments, it also gently reminds us that family life is often filled with imperfections, misunderstandings, and love. I think many parents could relate to the familiar family dynamics, making it an especially enjoyable read for both the adults and the children.

Faith then volunteered to share one of the books I had brought along, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!. It was such a playful and interactive story. She made sure the story friends shouting "No!" every time the pigeon tried to convince them to let him drive the bus. Their enthusiastic responses filled the pavilion with laughter, making it one of the highlights of the evening.

After Storytime, Nazri's family generously shared a special dessert and drink that are traditionally enjoyed during the recent festival they celebrated. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to taste something new and experience another culture through its food. Moments like these remind us that our Storytime is not just about sharing booksโ€”it is also about sharing traditions, cultures, and friendships.

As always, once the stories and snacks were over, the children happily ran off to play around the park while the adults stayed behind for a warm catch-up. Watching the children play freely together and seeing the friendships among the families continue to grow is one of the most beautiful parts of our Storytime. It is these simple moments that make our little community so special. ๐Ÿ’›

As we conclude our Storytime by Community to Community sessions at Sibu Wak Festival 2026, our hearts are filled with gratitude. ๐Ÿ’›

First and foremost, we would like to thank WAK Festival for inviting us to be part of this meaningful event. We are truly honoured to come on board as one of the collaborators. Over the past weekend, we had a wonderful time sharing stories, listening to stories, meeting new friends, and witnessing the joy that stories can bring to a community.

A special thank you goes to all our big and little storytellers who courageously stepped forward to share. Every story, every voice, and every smile added something unique to the sessions. Your willingness to contribute made these sessions lively, meaningful, and memorable.

We would also like to thank our Storytime community and everyone who stopped by to listen. Whether you stayed for one story or the entire session, your presence mattered. Storytelling is never a one-way activity. Every storyteller needs listeners, and every listener becomes part of the story. Your attention, laughter, participation, and encouragement created the warm atmosphere that made these gatherings so special.

At the same time, we would like to sincerely apologize that we were not able to spend more time getting to know and connecting with everyone who came by. There were also many things that could have been done better. In particular, the sound was softer than we had hoped, and some listeners may have had difficulty hearing parts of the stories. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and kindness despite all these imperfections. Your support and willingness to stay, listen, and participate meant a lot to us.

In truth, this event did not belong to any one person. It was built by a community. Without WAK providing the platform, without storytellers willing to share, and without listeners willing to gather and listen, none of this would have happened. Every person played a part in making these sessions possible.

Thank you for believing in stories, in community, and in the simple magic of gathering together to share an hour of our time. We look forward to meeting many of you again, whether at future WAK events or at our regular Storytime sessions in the Foo Chow Park.
