𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐍-𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐮𝐦

📍 𝐊𝐔𝐀𝐋𝐀 𝐋𝐔𝐌𝐏𝐔𝐑, 𝟐-𝟑 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – Throughout the two-day symposium, participants explored a broad range of maritime security developments, including 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆, 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in an increasingly complex operating environment. 🔭🛰️

Participants also took part in a 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 based on a fictional scenario. Working in multinational teams, the exercise highlighted the importance of 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 in responding to both traditional and non-traditional maritime security threats. 🕵🏻‍♂️🕵🏻‍♀️

The Symposium underscored the importance of 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in promoting a 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻. 🌏

🇦🇺🇲🇾 𝗔 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮–𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

08th August 2026, Butterworth - Yesterday marked the 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 — the culmination of more than 𝘀𝗶𝘅 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 between Australia and Malaysia. 🤝

In March 2025, we came together for the 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘆 to commence upgrades to a runway that Australia and Malaysia first built together 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟳𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼. 🛫

Yesterday, it was fantastic to see just how far the project has progressed. Once again, 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 to complete these important runway upgrades — a fitting reflection of the 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 between our two countries. 🇦🇺🇲🇾

With just a few months to go, we look forward to commemorating this 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 at the official opening ceremony. 🎉

𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡-𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 ⚓

📍𝗞𝗨𝗔𝗟𝗔 𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗣𝗨𝗥, 𝟮-𝟯 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 – The 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡-𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗦𝗘𝗖) 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 brought together 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹, 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 from ASEAN Member States and Australia to exchange perspectives on the opportunities and challenges shaping our shared maritime domain.

Held under the theme 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼-𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰, the symposium provided a valuable platform for 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 among experts engaged in maritime security across the region.

Last week, our Defence Advisor, Group Captain Belinda Edmunds and Instructor Captain Adam Webb joined veterans and families for commemorative services in Kuching to mark 60 Years of Peace since the signing of the Malaysia–Indonesia Peace Agreement in 1966, which brought the Confrontation to an end.

Group Captain Edmunds and Captain Webb took part in a Tree-Planting and Biodiversity Ceremony at Reservoir Park in Kuching, Sarawak, as well as services at Batu Lintang War Memorial Square and Heroes’ Grave. Each honoured the service and sacrifice made throughout our wartime history to the enduring friendships forged between Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
