Walking at least 7,000 steps a day has been linked to a reduced risk of developing up to 13 different types of cancer, according to a large-scale study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford. According to Science Alert, the study tracked over 85,000 adults in the UK using wearable activity trackers and found that walking at least 7,000 steps a day was linked to an 11 percent lower risk of developing cancer compared to walking 5,000 steps. When participants increased their daily steps to 9,000, the risk dropped by 16 percent, although the benefits began to level off beyond that point. The researchers emphasized that the reduced cancer risk was observed regardless of walking speed, meaning that simply moving more throughout the day is what matters most.

According to the study, walking regularly helped lower the risk of developing 13 specific types of cancer. These included breast, colon, lung, liver, kidney, bladder, endometrial, gastric, re**al, head and neck, myeloma, myeloid leukemia, and esophageal cancers. The researchers also found that replacing sedentary time with light or moderate physical activity further reduced cancer risk, reinforcing the idea that even small increases in daily movement can have a big impact on long-term health. These findings add to growing evidence that regular physical activity is one of the most effective and accessible ways to prevent chronic diseases, including cancer.
