Pada tahun 1972, Kementerian Perusahaan Utama (KPU) telah diwujudkan untuk memajukan industri komoditi negara yang berupaya memberi sumbangan kepada pertumbuhan ekonomi negara. Pada peringkat awal penubuhannya, KPU hanya memberi tumpuan kepada pembangunan dua komoditi utama iaitu bijih timah dan getah. Peranan KPU kemudiannya telah dikembangkan meliputi pembangunan komoditi lain seperti kelapa saw
it, koko, perhutanan dan kayu-kayan, mineral, nenas serta tembakau yang didapati turut memberi sumbangan kepada ekonomi Negara. Pada tahun 2004, KPU telah distrukturkan semula dan dikenali sebagai Kementerian Perusahaan perladangan dan komoditi (KPPK). Penstrukturan semula ini melibatkan perubahan bidang tanggungjawab, dimana Jemaah Pemasaran Lada Hitan (JPLH) dipindahkan daripada Kementerian Pertanian kepada KPPK manakala tanggungjawab berkaitan perhutanan, mineral dan geosains dipindahkan ke Kementerian Sumber Asli dan Alam Sekitar. Pada tahun 2012, eksport komoditi dan produk komoditi bernilai RM127.5 billion, meliputi 18% daripada jumlah dagangan eksport Malaysia.

In 1972, recognizing the important contributions of the commodities industry to the countryโ s economic growth, the Ministry of Primary Industries was established by the Government. During its initial stage, the Ministry of Primary Industries was only responsible for the development of tin ore and rubber, the two main commodities then. The Ministryโs role was later expanded to include the development other commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, forestry, minerals, pineapple and tobacco which also contributed to the countryโs economy. In 2004, the Ministry was restructured and renamed as the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC). Under the new structure, the Pepper Marketing Board, formerly under the ambit of the Ministry of Agriculture was included in MPIC whilst matters relating to forestry, mineral and geosciences were transferred to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Other main responsibilities of MPIC remain unchanged. In 2012, exports of commodity and commodity products valued at RM127.5 billion, constituting about 18% of Malaysiaโs total export of merchandise.
