Bridging research, technology, and global impact.

Delegates from MaHTAS, Pn. Ku Nurhasni Ku Abd Rahim, Dr. Norrina Jamaluddin, and En. Lee Sit Wai attended the National Innovation & Commercialisation Expo 2026 (NICE 2026) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, from 26-28 August 2026.

Organised by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) under the theme "Mission to Market: Malaysia to the World," the event provided valuable insights into transforming local research and ideas into market-ready solutions with global potential.

Key takeaways from the 3-day series included:

✍️Day 1 (The Future We Must Build: Powered by Technology): Unleashing the power of artificial intelligence and data-driven solutions, scaling future industries, and driving mission-oriented innovations from academia to commercial success.

✍️Day 2 (Science for Life: Bioeconomy, Health and National Resilience): Leveraging partnerships, bioeconomy, and health innovations to move research from concept to real-world national impact.

Concurrently, the team visited the International Medical Device Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC 2026), hosted by the Medical Device Authority (MDA), MOH, exploring cutting-edge advancements in medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health solutions from local and international exhibitors.

Together, these experiences reinforce our commitment to understanding and supporting a resilient, forward-thinking health technology ecosystem in Malaysia.

On 20 August 2026, the 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐎𝐂 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐛𝐲 𝐀𝐥𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐝𝐧. 𝐁𝐡𝐝. was held at Hospital Bera, celebrating an important milestone in Malaysia’s healthcare innovation journey.

The Medical Delivery Drone POC is a pioneering initiative to evaluate the feasibility, safety and effectiveness of using drone technology to transport clinical samples from 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐣𝐢 𝐀𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐝 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐡 (𝐇𝐨𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐒), 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐡. The project began in 2023 and progressed through four key phases: 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

This journey brought together MaHTAS, Hospital Bera, HoSHAS, Alphaswift Industries, MRANTI, MTDC and various regulatory and supporting agencies. Extensive preparations included aviation approvals, safety procedures, emergency response planning and sample-handling protocols.

The clinical study involving 𝟓𝟎 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 demonstrated complete diagnostic parity and preservation of biological integrity for samples transported by drone, supporting its potential as a viable and safe healthcare logistics solution.

The recognition ceremony celebrated not only a successful Proof of Concept, but also the value of 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬.

How do clinicians navigate the delicate space where clinical effectiveness meets budget reality? While every practitioner strives to offer cutting-edge care, limited resources mean every clinical decision carries an opportunity cost, hence, forcing health systems to evaluate whether a new intervention provides genuine value, or whether existing technologies require reassessment.

To bridge this critical gap between bedside care and health economics, the Malaysian Health Technology Assessment Section (MaHTAS) hosted the Economic Evaluation Workshop for Clinicians on 19–20 August 2026 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).

Day 1 laid the foundational framework for value-based care, starting with Dr. Hanin Farhana unpacking why economic evaluation is indispensable in clinical and HTA decision-making. Building on this, Dr. Khairil Idham Ismail guided participants through framing decision problems and interpreting Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratios (ICERs). As the morning unfolded, Dr. Annushiah Vasan Thakumar detailed how health outcomes are quantified using QALYs and utilities, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amirah Azzeri explored conducting economic evaluations alongside clinical trials. Moving into the practical afternoon sessions, Mr. Sivaraj Raman introduced implementation research in health economics, leading seamlessly into a hands-on critical appraisal exercise where Dr. Erni Zurina Romli and our team of facilitators guided clinicians through evaluating the utility of economic papers.

Day 2 advanced the discussion into modeling, health systems research, and strategic resource allocation. Ms. Nurkhodrulnada Muhamad Lattepi Khodrul ML opened the morning by demystifying model-based economic evaluations, followed by Dr. Erni Zurina’s insights on interpreting data uncertainty. Expanding the scope further, Dr. Nor Zam Azihan Mohd Hassan shared perspectives on health system research and service delivery evaluations, while Dr. Khairil Idham Ismail highlighted leveraging evidence sources beyond clinical trials, including real-world evidence. Grounding these concepts in system-level reality, Dr. Azmi Nor Mohd Farez bin Ahmat addressed resource constraints, affordability, and opportunity costs, before Dr. Hanin Farhana concluded the technical sessions by focusing on disinvestment and the systematic reassessment of existing health technologies.

We are pleased to share that Dr. Tengku Noor Farhana was invited as a speaker at the AMCHAM Healthcare Forum 2026, themed “Building Better Health through Knowledge and Action.”

The forum featured a keynote address by Datuk Seri Dr. Haji Dzulkefly and brought together representatives from the Ministry of Health (MOH), pharmaceutical companies, and various industry stakeholders.

It was a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, exchanging perspectives, and strengthening understanding across the healthcare ecosystem. We hope that this sharing session will be beneficial and serve as a stepping stone towards more effective collaboration and stronger partnerships between the healthcare sector and industry.

HTA Presentation of Evidence Table: Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs)

The presentation of the Evidence Table entitled “Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists (GLP-1 RAs)” was successfully held and chaired by the Deputy Director of MaHTAS, Dr. Syaqirah Akmal. The meeting was attended by a multidisciplinary panel of experts representing the fields of Endocrinology, Nephrology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pharmacoeconomics.

The session reviewed the current clinical evidence on the effectiveness, safety, and cost-effectiveness of GLP-1 RAs for the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes, in comparison with the current standard of care in Malaysia. Through engaging discussions with consultants and specialists, the meeting helped ensure that the health technology assessment remains rigorous, robust, and relevant to informing evidence-based healthcare policy.

World Lung Cancer Day | Looking Back at Emerging Innovations

This World Lung Cancer Day, we highlight how emerging technologies can improve lung cancer diagnosis and patient care.

In 2019, MaHTAS conducted a Horizon Scanning (TechScan) on the Bronchial Genomic Sequencing Classifier (GSC), an emerging genomic test designed to help reduce unnecessary invasive procedures after an inconclusive bronchoscopy.

Initially considered a novel technology in 2015, GSC was reclassified as an incremental improvement by 2021 as more clinical evidence became available. In 2019, evidence suggests that GSC may help reduce unnecessary invasive procedures in patients with intermediate-risk lung cancer.

At MaHTAS, we continue to evaluate emerging health technologies to support evidence-informed healthcare decisions for better patient outcomes.
