Mayor Clarifies Lorong Bayor Bukit 18 Issue and Calls for Fairness in Public Statements

I am deeply disappointed by the recent statement made by Michael Kong regarding the overgrown grass issue at Lorong Bayor Bukit 18, which unfairly portrayed MBKS as negligent and irresponsible without first verifying the actual facts and jurisdiction of the matter.

The land involved is State land and is not under the maintenance responsibility of MBKS. However, despite this, MBKS had already inspected the area and arranged for clearing works before the social media posting was made. Our officers were already preparing to carry out the cleaning operation this morning because we viewed the condition seriously due to potential health and safety risks to nearby residents.

The site condition was not merely due to naturally overgrown grass. MBKS officers also found that parts of the State land had been used by certain residents for illegal planting activities, including serai, kunyit, pandan, and other unmanaged vegetation, resulting in a messy and poorly maintained environment. Over time, the uncontrolled growth created an untidy condition and raised concerns over pest breeding and public hygiene.

As Mayor, I have always instructed MBKS officers to prioritise residents’ wellbeing above all else. Even when an issue falls outside our jurisdiction, we will still step in where necessary if public health and community safety are at risk. That is exactly what MBKS did in this case.

Unfortunately, instead of acknowledging the efforts taken by the Council, MBKS was publicly blamed and criticised as though no action had been taken. Such statements not only mislead the public but are also unfair to the hardworking officers and workers on the ground who continue to serve the community diligently every day.

MBKS should not become a convenient punching bag for political narratives or public attention. It is easy to make accusations on social media, but responsible leadership requires facts, fairness, and proper understanding of jurisdiction and responsibilities before pointing fingers.

While our staff were carrying out the clearing works, illegal structures, including several illegally erected car sheds on the State land, were also discovered. The matter will be referred to the rightful authority for further investigation and necessary action.

I would like to remind all parties that if there are issues involving State land or matters outside MBKS jurisdiction, complaints should also be directed to the appropriate agencies to ensure proper and effective action can be taken.

Before publicly blaming MBKS, all parties should first verify the facts carefully. The Council and its officers should not be unfairly criticised simply for the sake of creating public perception or acting like a hero on social media. Our officers are working on the ground every day to resolve issues and serve residents responsibly.

MBKS remains committed to serving the people professionally and responsibly. We will continue to act in the best interest of residents, regardless of whether recognition is given, because the safety, health, and wellbeing of the community will always remain our priority.

MBKS Clarifies Non-Season Parking Arrangement at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Chan Chin Ann

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) wishes to clarify concerns raised on social media regarding the implementation of the Pay & Go smart parking system at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Chan Chin Ann, particularly relating to the absence of Season Parking facilities in these areas.

The Council would like to emphasise that the affected parking areas have historically not been designated as Season Parking zones, including under the previous parking management system prior to the implementation of Pay & Go.

The parking bays located along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Chan Chin Ann are situated within busy commercial areas with consistently high parking demand throughout the day. Similar parking management approaches are also applied in other high-traffic commercial zones such as Main Bazaar, Carpenter Street, and Padungan, where Season Parking is likewise not provided.

This approach is necessary to ensure fair parking access and higher parking turnover for the general public, customers, tourists, delivery services, and business visitors who require short-term parking throughout the day. If Season Parking were permitted in these busy commercial zones, a large number of parking bays could be occupied for extended periods by the same vehicles, significantly reducing parking availability for other road users and affecting business accessibility within the city centre.

As a city centre local authority, MBKS must balance the needs of businesses, visitors, residents, and daily commuters while ensuring efficient traffic and parking management in high-demand areas. The implementation of the Pay & Go system does not introduce a new restriction, but rather continues the existing parking management policy previously enforced in these locations.

MBKS acknowledges the feedback and concerns raised by members of the public and business operators. The Council will continue to monitor and review the implementation of the smart parking system from time to time, taking into consideration operational requirements, traffic flow, business activities, and overall public convenience.

The Council also wishes to encourage the public to verify facts and obtain accurate information through the proper channels before making assumptions or circulating misleading statements on social media.

MBKS in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS), the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), and the Sarawak Veterinary Association (SVA), successfully organised the Mass Vaccination, Licensing, Microchipping and Subsidized Neutering Programme yesterday at Mayor Song Swee Guan Park, Tabuan Jaya.

The programme held from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm received encouraging support and participation from dog owners within Kuching South reflecting growing public awareness on responsible pet ownership and rabies prevention.

Under the anti-rabies vaccination programme coordinated by DVSS, a total of 152 dog owners participated, with 236 dogs vaccinated during the one-day campaign. Of the total, 56 dogs received their first dose vaccination, while 180 dogs received booster doses.

At the same time, MBKS issued 290 dog licences and facilitated the installation of 60 microchips for registered dogs. These initiatives form part of the Council’s continuous efforts to strengthen responsible pet ownership, improve traceability of pets, and support enforcement measures under the rabies control programme.

In addition, the subsidized neutering programme jointly conducted by MBKS, SSPCA and SVA received 27 applications from pet owners seeking assistance for neutering services. The programme aims to encourage population control of stray and unwanted animals through humane and responsible methods.

Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South expressed appreciation to all agencies, volunteers, veterinarians, and members of the public for their strong cooperation and support towards the programme.

He emphasized that rabies prevention is a shared responsibility and continuous public participation is important to ensure a safer and healthier environment for both the community and animals. He also encouraged pet owners to vaccinate and license their dogs annually, microchip their pets, and practise responsible pet ownership.

MBKS Promotes Love and Respect for Grandparents Through Children’s Poster Competition

Love, respect, and appreciation for grandparents were among the key messages highlighted by Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South during the prize giving ceremony of the “My Grandparents, My Heart, My Hero” Poster Competition for primary school children.

Speaking at the event, Dato Wee said the competition was organised not only to encourage creativity among children, but also to instil the importance of family values, compassion, and respect for the elderly from a young age.

He shared that grandparents play an important role in the lives of children by providing love, guidance, care, and emotional support within the family.

Grandparents are our silent heroes. They may not ask for recognition, but their sacrifices, care, and unconditional love have shaped many families and communities, he said.

Dato Wee added that in today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, it is important to remind children to spend quality time with their grandparents and appreciate the elderly while they are still around.

He noted that simple acts such as talking to grandparents, listening to their stories, helping them, and expressing love and care can bring great happiness to older persons.

The programme also supports the Kuching South Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Action Plan and the Age Friendly Cities and Communities (AFCC) Action Plan implemented by MBKS.

According to Dato Wee, the CFCI Action Plan aims to nurture children who are not only academically successful but also caring, respectful, and compassionate towards others, especially family members and senior citizens.

At the same time, the AFCC Action Plan focuses on creating a city where older persons continue to feel respected, included, valued, and cared for within the community.

A caring city is not measured only by development and infrastructure, but by how we treat our children and our elderly, he said.

The competition received encouraging participation from primary school students, with posters creatively expressing love and appreciation towards grandparents through colourful drawings and heartfelt messages.
