Mayor Clarifies Lorong Bayor Bukit 18 Issue and Calls for Fairness in Public Statements
I am deeply disappointed by the recent statement made by Michael Kong regarding the overgrown grass issue at Lorong Bayor Bukit 18, which unfairly portrayed MBKS as negligent and irresponsible without first verifying the actual facts and jurisdiction of the matter.
The land involved is State land and is not under the maintenance responsibility of MBKS. However, despite this, MBKS had already inspected the area and arranged for clearing works before the social media posting was made. Our officers were already preparing to carry out the cleaning operation this morning because we viewed the condition seriously due to potential health and safety risks to nearby residents.
The site condition was not merely due to naturally overgrown grass. MBKS officers also found that parts of the State land had been used by certain residents for illegal planting activities, including serai, kunyit, pandan, and other unmanaged vegetation, resulting in a messy and poorly maintained environment. Over time, the uncontrolled growth created an untidy condition and raised concerns over pest breeding and public hygiene.
As Mayor, I have always instructed MBKS officers to prioritise residents’ wellbeing above all else. Even when an issue falls outside our jurisdiction, we will still step in where necessary if public health and community safety are at risk. That is exactly what MBKS did in this case.
Unfortunately, instead of acknowledging the efforts taken by the Council, MBKS was publicly blamed and criticised as though no action had been taken. Such statements not only mislead the public but are also unfair to the hardworking officers and workers on the ground who continue to serve the community diligently every day.
MBKS should not become a convenient punching bag for political narratives or public attention. It is easy to make accusations on social media, but responsible leadership requires facts, fairness, and proper understanding of jurisdiction and responsibilities before pointing fingers.
While our staff were carrying out the clearing works, illegal structures, including several illegally erected car sheds on the State land, were also discovered. The matter will be referred to the rightful authority for further investigation and necessary action.
I would like to remind all parties that if there are issues involving State land or matters outside MBKS jurisdiction, complaints should also be directed to the appropriate agencies to ensure proper and effective action can be taken.
Before publicly blaming MBKS, all parties should first verify the facts carefully. The Council and its officers should not be unfairly criticised simply for the sake of creating public perception or acting like a hero on social media. Our officers are working on the ground every day to resolve issues and serve residents responsibly.
MBKS remains committed to serving the people professionally and responsibly. We will continue to act in the best interest of residents, regardless of whether recognition is given, because the safety, health, and wellbeing of the community will always remain our priority.
