FOOD FOR LIFE is a nonprofit organization, bringing food and life to the needy of the world through the liberal distribution of pure plan

t-based meals. The project started in 1974 when an elderly Indian swami, Srila Prabhupada, implored his yoga students not to allow anyone within a ten mile radius of his ashram to go hungry. The program grew quickly, and today Food for Life is active in over 50
countries worldwide. Volunteers serve more than 1,500,000 free meals daily to schools for the poor, orphanages; on the streets of major cities, and to disaster areas, making FOOD FOR LIFE the largest vegan food relief in the world. Community Based
Food for Life Global volunteers represent a wide cross section of society. Food for Life Global is a non-sectarian organization and so everyone is welcome to participate in our community projects.

It was a regular Sunday when me and my friends volunteered for Food For Life Malaysia where we distributed food to the less fortunate.

At the beginning, we didn't know what to expect out of this experience as the idea of being around people who live on the streets sounds a little unsettling. Not to mention in a public area open to any possibilities.

When we tried distributing food, to our surprise not everyone was interested. But members who are used to giving out food didn't seem to have a problem getting people to take each nicely packed meal. For a moment there, we wondered why?

After several trials and errors, we realize our approach towards the less fortunate people was just wrong. The fact we were awkward made them even more uncomfortable around us. So we changed our approach by being more accepting and less awkward towards them. And guess what?! It worked. Before we know it, all the food was gone...into their bellies of course!

In the end of the day, all the assumption the less fortunate being aggressive or having cruel intentions, disperse in air as we looked around and appreciate seeing so many people who are content and happy. What made it more wonderful was how nice and thoughtful these people are.

Moral of the story, although some people hold the opinion that the less fortunate chose this way of life when there is so much more that can be done. What most people don't realize is whatever the circumstances of their life, the less fortunate are still human beings like any of us. Therefore they too deserve the same respect and treatment like any of us.
