UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute - UMBI UMBI was formed in July 2003 as one of the strategies by the university to enhance research in molecular medicine.

UMBI has grown in strength over the years and is now recognised as a Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) by the Ministry of Higher Education, a status conferred to only 6 centres of excellence in research in the nation. For the HICoE critical agenda program, UMBI is focusing on cancer biomarkers. UMBI has key laboratories providing platform technologies and analysis in genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics.

UMBI is pleased to share a published scientific report arising from the PhD research of ๐Œ๐ฌ. ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐€๐ฆ๐ข๐ซ๐š๐ก ๐Œ๐จ๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐…๐š๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ค under the supervision of ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐๐ซ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐๐ž๐จ๐ก ๐‡๐ฎ๐ข-๐ฆ๐ข๐ง. Published in IJID Regions, the study examines the nasal carriage of antibiotic-resistant bacteria among migrant workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Nepal living in Malaysia's Klang Valley, highlighting an important but often overlooked public health issue affecting migrant worker communities in the country.

Distinct MRS species dominance was also observed among different nationalities. The study further identified a significant link between ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐๐ž๐ ๐ก๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ and the presence of these pathogens, particularly among workers employed in the ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐Ÿ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ. Molecular analysis showed that many bacterial isolates exhibited ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐  ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž, raising concerns for silent transmission within the community. Dr. Aishah shared that the global prevalence reached approximately 38% in 2022, affecting an estimated 3 billion individuals, while more than 30% of the population in South-East Asia is affected. In Malaysia, findings from the ๐๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ฅ๐ญ๐ก ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Œ๐จ๐ซ๐›๐ข๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐’๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฒ (๐๐‡๐Œ๐’) ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘ indicate that approximately 28% of Malaysians have fatty liver disease.

UMBI is pleased to share a recent publication from our researchers, led by ๐ƒ๐ซ. ๐„๐ณ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ž ๐€๐ณ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐š ๐Œ๐จ๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐š๐ ๐‡๐š๐ง๐ข๐Ÿ, exploring the distinct molecular roles of TGFฮฒ isoforms in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), one of the most aggressive and treatment-challenging breast cancer subtypes.

Using transcriptomic analysis of 486 TNBC patient samples, the study revealed that ๐“๐†๐…ฮฒ๐Ÿ, ๐“๐†๐…ฮฒ๐Ÿ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐“๐†๐…ฮฒ๐Ÿ‘ ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž ๐ง๐ž๐ญ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ, with TGFฮฒ1 demonstrating the largest genomic influence. Despite these differences, all three isoforms converged on critical biological pathways linked to metabolic reprogramming, cellular polarity, and Rap1 signalling โ€” mechanisms ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐ฆ๐ž๐ญ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐  ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž.

Importantly, the team identified several ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ซ๐ค๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ, including CAMK2N1 and COL1A1, which were associated with ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ and may contribute toward future precision medicine strategies in TNBC management.

UMBI is pleased to share a recent publication from our researchers, led by Dr. Redha Abdullah, exploring novel genes associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) using a graph-based clustering approach and protein-protein interaction network analysis.

By analysing complex molecular interaction networks, the team identified ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐€๐Œ๐‹-๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ก๐จ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ข๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐ž๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐š๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐€๐Œ๐‹ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐›๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž๐ฌ, including PML-RARฮฑ and CD34-positive AML. The findings revealed that these genes are ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ค๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ซ๐ข๐›๐จ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฆ๐ž ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ, ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ฅ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ, ๐œ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ง ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ค๐ž๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ฐ๐š๐ฒ๐ฌ such as PI3K/AKT signalling and hematopoietic dysregulation.

Importantly, this systems-level approach provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying AML progression and highlights several candidate genes that may serve as future biomarkers or therapeutic targets for this aggressive blood cancer. The study also demonstrates the ๐ฉ๐จ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ก-๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐š๐ฅ ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ ๐ฒ in advancing precision diagnostics and personalised treatment strategies in hematological malignancies.

These findings further reflect UMBIโ€™s growing strength in molecular oncology, bioinformatics, systems biology, and translational cancer research aimed at improving disease understanding and patient outcomes.

The first session by Assoc. Professor Dr. Nadiah Abu titled โ€œ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐€๐ง๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐๐š๐ฉ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง โ€“ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ข๐ง ๐’๐œ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐žโ€ explored the evolving nature of scientific careers and the importance of strategic adaptability in research. Her presentation discussed the concept of intellectual freedom, structural pillars of academic survival, and the many dimensions of research pivoting including hypothesis, methodological, model-system, career and translational pivots. Drawing from notable scientific success stories such as the discovery journey of Minoxidil, Dr. Nadiah also shared important reflections on โ€œpivot penaltiesโ€, the Dunning-Kruger Effect, Nobel Disease, and the challenges faced by non-pivoters. She further inspired the audience through her personal experience in securing the ๐‹๐จ๐ง๐ -๐“๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ ๐‘๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐’๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฆ๐ž (๐‹๐‘๐†๐’) ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‡๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (๐Š๐๐“). The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of CRISPR technology, tracing its origins from bacterial immune defense systems to one of the most transformative tools in biotechnology. The audience gained insights into how scientists repurposed the bacterial memory spacer system into synthetic guide RNA technology, enabling broad applications across multiple fields. Dr. Aimanuddin highlighted the growing impact of CRISPR in plant biotechnology, livestock improvement, genetic and metabolic disease correction, infectious disease control, drug discovery, biofuel production and the food industry. He also shared updates on CRISPR therapeutics currently in clinical trials, alongside ongoing UMBI research applications including targeted gene knockout studies in breast cancer cells and CRISPRi genetic screening targeting upregulated cell surface genes in glioblastoma (GBM).

The session reflected UMBIโ€™s continued commitment towards advancing molecular medicine research and fostering a culture of scientific excellence and collaboration.
