ANY VIEWS AND DISCUSSIONS POSTED HERE ARE THOSE OF THE AUTHOR AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT THE OFFICIAL POSITION AND STAND OF THE SCHOOL "Foundation year and its early development"

The school was primitively known as Anglo Tamil School and was founded by a medical officer called Rev. William Thomas Kensett who was then attached with the British Royal Navy HMS Orion battleship which docked in

Singapore before the turn of the century. Kensett later left his service and founded the school in a shophouse at the corner of Batu Road (now Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman) and Java Street (now Jalan Tun Perak). The school received predominantly students of Indian descent and thus the school was named Anglo Tamil School. In 1904, the school moved to its present location in Petaling Hill after Capt. Shellabear (founder of MPH Group and its bookstore chain) managed to secure the land from the British government for a believed price of 300 dollars (presumably Straits dollar). Petaling Hill was earlier roamed by tigers and Chinese graveyards scattered all around. Victoria Institution was located at High Street (Jalan Bandar) and moved to their present location after a devastating Sungai Klang flood in late 1920s. MBSKL had already inhabited Petaling Hill for more than 20 years by then. Donations began to pour in when the 3rd principal Rev. William Edward Horley (founder of ACS Ipoh and a well known gentleman in the early days of Ipoh, Perak) secured funds from prominent early Kuala Lumpur tycoons aka towkays to build the school building. The earliest school building was partially wooden and had a Tudor lookalike appearance and two adjacent wings were later added to respective sides. The current school office was built on the same spot of the 1904 main building. All the tiles from the early building were salvaged and re-tiled back onto the floors. The school field was laid with funds donated by Kuala Lumpur famous tycoon Loke Yew and the field was named "Loke Yew Padang". School uniform was yet to be implemented and students were believed to be donning traditional costumes of respective races to school. Students of various races such as Malay, Chinese, Indian, Bengali, Eurasian and even Japanese were studying in MBSKL.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of our old boy Dato' Teo Chiang Quan, a property developer and businessman due to complications from an unexpected illness at the age of 72. Dato' Teo (fondly known as CQ to his MBSKL circle of friends) graduated in 1967 from 5 Science 2. CQ was always supportive of the school and the old boys association in which he had helmed as a president and even granted his office space in Paramount Corporation located at Damansara Uptown to be used by the MBSKL Alumni Association free of charge and be made temporary office and assigned his personal assistant/secretary to help the Alumni with administration works.

CQ was a former president of the MBSKL Alumni Association and remained active due to his love towards the school and alumni association. Many years ago the IT lab of the school was contributed by him and named after his late father Teo Soo Pin, from the donation of the hardware to the renovation of the interiors, for the usage of all students and teachers of Methodist Boys' School, Kuala Lumpur. He was the MBSKL Board of Governors chairman and also the president of the Federation of Methodist Schools Alumni Association of Malaysia.

CQ was the grandson of Dato' Teo Hang Sam (Singapore Rice Importers Association 1955-1959 president and founder of See Hoy Chan Agencies Group), popularly known as the "Rice King of Malaya" and builder of Hotel Malaya, a common landmark for MBSKL students passing thru Petaling Street making their way up to the school.

Cited from a 1989 newspaper article which reads "prominent among the changes is the appointment of Teo Soo Chew-who recently took over as chairman of Singapore listed Malaya Credit Ltd. - as a director, and his nephew, Teo Chiang Quan, as the new managing director of Paramount, a property group. Tan Sri Mohamed Noah Bin Omar remains the chairman of the company. "

He began his career in what was known as Malaysian Rice Mills (MRI) in 1976 and eventually renamed as Paramount Corporation berhad in 1980, which is responsible for the foundation of KDU private college as well as Sri KDU private school, thru his lenses of business acumen.

On 19 July 2005, he was bestowed with state chivalry decoration which carries the title Dato', for his deeds in contributing to the progress and well-being of the society by the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar (Yamtuan Besar) of Negeri Sembilan.

CQ was a warm hearted person and able to strike up a conversation with anyone at any level.

The School wishes to convey deepest condolences to the bereaved family of CQ. And a huge thanks for all the help rendered to the school, friends, students and the society.

We would like to thank Mr. Yap Hoy Hoong, former vice president of the MBSKL Alumni Association for discovering the origin of our school song introduced by the late Mr. Hugh F. Clancy, an American who served as a principal in Methodist Boys' School, Kuala Lumpur.

Upon comparison, it is evident that the school song of us "Go Forward MBS" introduced by the late Mr. Hugh F. Clancy to the school in 1948 is an adopted version of the fight song of Northwestern University in the state of Illinois, United States of America. Titled "Go Northwestern Go" and composed by Theodore Van Etten in 1912, the song is played by the Northwestern University Wildcat Marching Band during their football games in the USA.

The school cordially invites old boys and old girls of MBSKL to the retirement day of the principal Mr. Wong Chee Kheon. Mr. Wong succeeded Ms. Moey in 2005 and was instrumental in helping our school to achieve "Cluster School" status in 3 years time. To that we wish Mr. Wong a happy retirement day soon. Mr. Wong has been very supportive towards the welfare of the students and the activities organised by the Alumni Association as well as history research of the school. We feel greatly indebted for this man in maintaining the legacy of our forefathers. Go Forward MBS!
