On this 63rd Malaysia Day, we celebrate the story of Malaysia — a story shaped by many peoples, cultures, languages and traditions, and by the shared spirit that brings them together.

It is a day to remember the journey that brought Malaysia together, to appreciate the diversity that makes the country unique, and to look ahead to the generations who will continue writing its story.

Finland is grateful to be part of Malaysia’s journey as a friend and partner. After more than five decades of diplomatic relations, the ties between our two countries continue to grow through people, ideas and cooperation. We look forward to many more years of friendship between Finland and Malaysia.

From the forests of Sabah to the streets of Kota Kinabalu, how can we use technology and innovation to build a more sustainable future? 🌲🏙️

During Ambassador Anne Vasara’s visit to Sabah, the Embassy explored two sides of sustainable development: managing natural resources and building cities for the future.

At Borneo Forest Cooperative, discussions focused on sustainable forestry, traceability and technology for better forest management. The conversation also highlighted the importance of solutions that support the communities connected to these landscapes. The engagement builds on previous Finland–Sabah cooperation through the Business Finland's Smart Forestry Booster export programme, connecting Finnish expertise and technology with Sabah’s experience in sustainable forestry.

In Kota Kinabalu, Ambassador Vasara met with Mayor Dato' Sri Dr. Sabin Samitah of Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu to learn more about the city’s plans to become smarter, safer, greener and more liveable. Discussions also explored exchanges on practices of solid waste management, flood management and city-to-city cooperation.

Different settings, but similar challenges: how can technology and innovation help us manage resources, address environmental challenges and improve everyday life?
Finland brings experience in sustainable forestry, circular economy, smart cities and digital solutions. Sabah brings its own expertise, priorities and local knowledge.
For Team Finland, these exchanges are about sharing experience, learning from one another and exploring practical solutions. 🌱

The people, ideas and systems behind growth – discovering what is ahead for Sabah. 🇫🇮🇲🇾

During Ambassador Anne Vasara’s visit to Sabah on 1-4 September 2026, Team Finland explored four areas central to the state’s development: connectivity, innovation, talent and energy.

With Datuk Ewon Benedick Official Media, Deputy Chief Minister III cm State Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport ( ), together with Invest Sabah Berhad, the conversation looked at how stronger connectivity can support Sabah’s economy, from timber to ports, aerospace and industrial development, alongside emerging trade opportunities.

At the Kementerian Pendidikan, Sains, Teknologi dan Inovasi Sabah ( ), Datuk Hassan bin Mahali and Mdm Doria Tai Yun Tyng shared perspectives on the people and ideas behind innovation — from education and research and development, to AI, talent and TVET.

And with Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser bin Abdul Wahid and colleagues at the Energy Commission of Sabah ( ), the focus turned to the energy transition and the systems needed to support it, including the grid and various sources of renewable energy used. Finnish companies such as Wärtsilä Corporation and AFRY Management Consulting are already contributing to Sabah’s energy sector, providing examples of Finnish expertise and solutions in practice.

While these discussions covered different sectors, they all pointed to the same challenge: how can technology, skills and new solutions support Sabah’s growth? For Team Finland, the focus is on understanding Sabah’s priorities and exploring where Finnish expertise can be relevant. There is plenty to continue the conversation on. 🌱

Finland and Sabah: continuing the conversation 🇫🇮🇲🇾🌱

During her first official visit to Sabah, Ambassador of Finland to Malaysia Anne Vasara paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor to learn more about Sabah’s development priorities and discuss areas of mutual interest.

The conversation touched on sustainable development, technology, innovation and the green economy, reflecting Sabah’s development priorities and Finland’s experience in innovative and sustainable solutions.

The visit builds on previous exchanges between Sabah and Finland. In May 2024, Sabah officials visited Helsinki to explore Finnish approaches to digital governance, the circular economy and technological innovation. The Sabah International Expo provided another opportunity to continue these exchanges and connect with partners across the state.

Alongside the visit, Team Finland in Malaysia opened the Uusi Puu - New Wood exhibition at the Sabah International Expo, showcasing Finnish expertise and innovative wood-based solutions. 🌲

Ambassador Vasara’s first visit to Sabah provided an opportunity to better understand the state’s priorities and explore areas where Finland and Sabah can continue to exchange experience and expertise. Team Finland in Malaysia looks forward to continuing the dialogue with the Government of Sabah and partners across the state.

🏡The Finnish Mökki - Finnish Happiness in a word

Ask a Finn where they are happiest, and most will answer without hesitation: in a mökki.

The word means cabin, but the concept goes much deeper. A mökki is a cabin in the countryside, almost always near water, and is often the place where Finns feel happiest.

Meet our latest addition to the embassy, Waltteri, our EDUFI trainee!

"Salam dari Kuala Lumpur! 👋 I’m Waltteri, and I’m joining the Embassy of Finland in Malaysia as an intern for the next six months. During my internship, I’ll be supporting Team Finland activities and country image work, alongside a wide range of other responsibilities.

I’m currently studying Economics and working on my master’s thesis alongside my internship. I also have a background and particular interest in circular economy and sustainability, which I hope to bring into my work here.

I’ve now been in Kuala Lumpur for about a month, and I’ve really enjoyed it so far! The people have been incredibly welcoming, the food has been great, and I’ve already found my favorite: nasi goreng. The weather, on the other hand, is definitely an adjustment for a Finn! ☀️

I’m looking forward to learning more about Finnish–Malaysian cooperation, meeting new people, and discovering more of Malaysia. I’m very excited for the months ahead with such a great team here at the Embassy!"

What if waste is not waste yet? ♻️🇫🇮🇲🇾

The Embassy of Finland was pleased to join the Waste Management Association of Malaysia Annual Conference in Genting Highlands, themed “Circular Transformation: Waste to Value.”

Ambassador of Finland to Malaysia Anne Vasara joined the opening ceremony and took part in engaging discussions on the opportunities and challenges of advancing a more circular economy in Malaysia. The conversations highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation and partnerships in turning waste into valuable resources and building more sustainable solutions. 🌱

Finland has been asking a similar question: how can we use resources more wisely, keep materials in circulation for longer, and create new value from what we already have? Our Uusi Puu - New Wood exhibition offered one example, showcasing innovative bioeconomy and wood-based materials and new uses for a familiar natural resource, into value creation.

Circularity starts with how we design, produce, use and reuse – with waste and final incineration as the last step, preceded by many other opportunities to extend product lifecycle. An important conversation to expand going forward is how to reduce the creation of waste in the beginning of the loop, and how to select materials that perform well during their lifecycle for durability, repairability, reusability and recycling.🌲

Team Finland in Malaysia looks forward to continuing our work with WMAM, KPKT Malaysia and partners across Malaysia to exchange knowledge and support stronger circular economy solutions and knowledge exchange between Finland and Malaysia.
