【Special Exhibition: Assembling Memory — The Journey of a Museum】
To mark the museum’s third anniversary, this exhibition presents the story behind its creation. The site was formerly Shui Kat & Co.; a few years after its departure from High Street, the premises were transformed into a museum. Visitors can explore the early history of the temple and Kuala Lumpur, and step into the temple itself to experience a living continuation of that history. Perhaps, on some ordinary afternoon, an unplanned visit may allow one to witness—and even become part of—history.
The museum’s establishment was initiated by our former president and trustee, the late Dato’ Ir. Hew Wee Ting, who in 1989 envisioned a museum dedicated to preserving and narrating the history of the century-old Sin Sze Si Ya Temple. This vision was formally launched on 4 June 2017, with him serving as planning chairman.
Through the joint efforts of the Board of Trustees, the Malaysian Chinese Research Centre under the University of Malaya, and the museum staff, the museum was completed on 5 March 2023, after overcoming the challenges of the pandemic.
This exhibition traces the museum’s journey—from the collection, study, and classification of historical materials, to the preservation of artefacts and the design of exhibition spaces, supported by many dedicated contributors. It reflects how a space was created to safeguard memories before they fade or are lost, and how these efforts preserve their original form, while also looking ahead to future developments.
We invite you to follow our journey—witness the birth of the museum, the gathering and reconstruction of memory, and how, through preservation, we resist the fading of remembrance and bear witness to the legacy of each generation.
