SIMPOSIUM SEARCCT PERINGKAT KEBANGSAAN DI NEGERI SABAH 2026 “MEMBINA KETAHANAN DIGITAL BELIA”

Pusat Serantau Asia Tenggara Bagi Mencegah Keganasan (SEARCCT), Kementerian Luar Negeri Malaysia, telah menganjurkan Simposium SEARCCT Peringkat Kebangsaan yang pertama bertemakan “Membina Ketahanan Digital Belia” pada 14 Mei 2026 di Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Kota Kinabalu. Program ini telah dianjurkan dengan kerjasama Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) dan Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

Simposium yang dihadiri oleh 604 peserta dari universiti, institut pendidikan guru, institusi pendidikan dan latihan teknikal dan vokasional (TVET) dan agensi- agensi Kerajaan dari Kota Kinabalu, bertujuan meningkatkan kesedaran mengenai keselamatan siber dan ancaman digital, khususnya dalam kalangan belia.

Majlis perasmian disempurnakan oleh YBhg. Datin Paduka Nur Ashikin Mohd Taib. Syarahan Utama bertajuk “Peranan Belia dalam Memperkukuh Ketahanan Digital dan Keselamatan Negara” telah disampaikan oleh YDH SAC Datuk Mohd Azhar Hamin, Ketua Jabatan Pencegahan Jenayah dan Keselamatan Komuniti, Ibu Pejabat Polis Kontinjen Sabah. Selain itu simposium ini merangkumi dua sesi panel perbincangan bertajuk “Memahami Ancaman Digital dan Kerentanan Belia” dan “Forum Khas Fahaman Pelampau Keganasan”.

Simposium ini mencerminkan komitmen berterusan SEARCCT dalam memperkukuh kesedaran awam, memperkasa pendekatan pencegahan serta menggalakkan usaha seluruh masyarakat dalam menangani cabaran keselamatan yang semakin berkembang dalam era digital.

On 7 May 2026, SEARCCT had the honour to welcome delegation from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Philippines to the centre for their Women in Security 2026 Study Tour. The delegation was led by Ms. Monica C. Ang-Tan, the Program Manager for Political Affairs at FES.

The visit provided a platform to share valuable and research-based insights into counter-terrorism and preventing violent extremism in digital age, within Southeast Asia region.

SEARCCT HIGHLIGHTS AL THREATS AND EMERGING TRENDS AT GENERAL OPERATIONS FORCE HEADQUARTERS, SARAWAK BRIGADE

On 28 April 2026, the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) was invited by the Unit Pengajian Pencegahan Keganasan, Maktab PDRM Kuala Lumpur, to deliver a talk at the Seminar Pengurusan Krisis dan Bencana 2026 held at the General Operations Force Headquarters, Sarawak Brigade. The session, titled "AI: Ancaman dan Trend Terkini,” addressed the evolving role of artificial intelligence in shaping contemporary security threats, particularly in the context of terrorism and violent extremism.

The session was delivered by Encik Kennimrod Sariburaja, Director of Research and Publications, SEARCCT, who shared key insights on how emerging Al technologies are increasingly being exploited by terrorist and extremist groups. The discussion highlighted the use of deepfakes, Al-generated content and automated communication tools to spread disinformation, manipulate narratives and influence public perception, especially among digitally engaged audiences.

The lecture aimed to enhance participants' awareness and understanding of current and emerging Al-driven threats, while equipping them with relevant knowledge to better respond within crisis and disaster management settings.

UNIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES (ULS) IN UNIVERSITI MALAYSIA SARAWAK (UNIMAS)

On 28 April 2026, the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) organised a University Lecture Series (ULS) in collaboration with Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). Puan Siti Hikmah Musthar, Research Officer from the Research and Publications Division at SEARCCT, delivered a lecture titled “Misinformation, Disinformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Violent Extremism”. The lecture focused on equipping students with the knowledge and resilience needed to navigate complex information environments shaped by rapid technological advancements. The programme was attended by 250 students from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, who actively participated in discussions and engagements throughout the session. It was held as part of SEARCCT’s ongoing public awareness to engage higher education institutions and to strengthen digital resilience among youth in preventing and countering violent extremism.
