THE 11TH EDITION OF RITMA KINABALU STRENGTHENS THE DEVELOPMENT OF SABAH'S ARTS, CULTURE, AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES!
KOTA KINABALU, 6 December 2025 — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), through the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN), in collaboration with the Sabah State Government and Creative Arts Production, is organising Ritma Kinabalu 2025, also known as Rhythms of Kinabalu (ROK), from 5 to 8 December 2025 (Friday – Monday) at the Dataran site, Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex, Sabah.
Now in its eleventh year, the festival has solidified its position as a forum for cultural empowerment and a catalyst for the expansion of Sabah's creative industry. This year's edition, themed "Irama & Alam" (Rhythm & Nature), emphasizes the integration of traditional and contemporary arts through performances featuring heritage instruments such as the kulintangan, sompoton, gong, seruling (flute), and tagunggu, combined with modern instrumentation and cutting-edge music technology. This strategy indicates a long-term commitment to keeping Sabah's musical history active and relevant in today's creative world.
The Opening Ceremony of Ritma Kinabalu 2025 was officiated today by The Honourable Dr. Andi Md. Shamsureezal Mohd Sainal, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, representing the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah (KePKAS), together with Mr. Mohd Radzi bin Omar, Deputy Director-General (Culture and Arts Sector) of the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN).
Also present to grace the ceremony were Datuk Josie Lai Mei Sing, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah (KePKAS); Mrs. Marina binti Abu Bakar, Director of the National Department for Culture and Arts, Sabah; and Mr. Mohamd Raizuli bin Jusoh, Division Secretary of Event Management, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Ritma Kinabalu aims to elevate the prestige of Sabah's traditional music, strengthen the state's position as a world-class cultural tourism destination, foster a multidisciplinary creative ecosystem that includes music, design, visual arts, and technology, and expand collaborative opportunities among cultural practitioners. Since its debut in 2011, the festival has evolved into a high-impact platform that plays an important role in maintaining traditional musical heritage, boosting the creative economy, reaffirming Sabah's cultural identity, and promoting tourism through cultural experiences.
Key festival highlights include Malam Lestari Ritma Kinabalu, Kampung ROK Cultural Village Experience, Tamu Seni (Borneo Art Bazaar & Creative Market), Music Extravaganza Competition, Miss ROK 2025, Ratu Kebaya Cilik, and the Madodong Food Festival ROK. Adding to the excitement is the Carshow Borneo Festival @ ROK 2025, which is expected to draw over 200 vehicle owners, will add to the excitement.
For the first time, ROK introduces the Kampung ROK – Cultural Village Experience, an interactive platform showcasing the cultural lifeways of Sabah’s ethnic communities such as the Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Bajau and Rungus. Visitors will be able to experience traditional culinary demonstrations, heritage games, musical instrument workshops, customary practices, Linangkit weaving, folk activities and live cultural performances.
Festival-goers will also be treated to Malam Lestari Ritma Kinabalu on 6 December 2025 (Saturday) at 7.30 PM, featuring Sabah’s renowned artists including Dabra Sia, Tompuvan, Razali Kulintangan, Suara Buluh Perindu Kinabalu, Bolos Ru Bulur and True Echo. The festival will be further enlivened with a special performance by Ella, Malaysia’s Queen of Rock, during the Madodong Food Festival on 8 December 2025 (Monday), at 7.30 PM.
