ECoS held a strategic engagement session with Kementerian Kerajaan Tempatan dan Perumahan Sabah (KKTP) to discuss key matters relating to gas pipeline corridor planning, development control, and public safety considerations.
The ECoS delegation was led by Ts. Muhammad Azuan, ECoS Director of Safety and Monitoring, while the KKTP delegation was headed by the Head of Development Sector, Johnny Samson.
The session began with a briefing on the draft Guideline for Managing the Safety of Gas Pipeline Distribution Corridors in Sabah presented by ECoS Technical Officer (Gas and Power), Ir. Ts. Dr. Ridwan Mokhtar, followed by a constructive and in-depth technical discussion.
The engagement provided an important platform for knowledge sharing, alignment of regulatory perspectives, and gathering practical feedback to strengthen the proposed framework.
KKTP commended ECoS’ proactive initiative, particularly in drawing lessons from the Putra Heights gas pipeline incident, and underscored the importance of integrating pipeline corridor safety considerations into land-use planning and development approval processes through the active involvement of Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan (PBT).
Such alignment is crucial to ensure that risk-based planning controls are embedded within statutory planning frameworks, enabling safer development near gas infrastructure while preserving orderly, resilient, and sustainable urban growth.
The engagement marks another important milestone towards establishing a more coordinated and comprehensive governance framework for gas pipeline corridor safety in Sabah, reinforcing inter-agency collaboration in protecting strategic energy assets and enhancing public safety.
