I believe many Penangites have noticed the increasing number of mini bus stops appearing around the island recently, especially at locations that previously had nothing more than a bus stop pole. Some of you may also have read the recent Sin Chew Daily (Northern Edition) 星洲日報大北馬 article shared by my fellow MBPP Councillor, Chan Soon Aun.

Let me share the story behind these mini bus stops.
Back in August 2023, while I was attached to the office of YB Zairil Khir Johari , I received a call from a bus user living in Kampung Makam, Dato Kramat. Like many others, she depended fully on public buses for her daily commute.
The nearest bus stop to her home was opposite the road infront of a barber shop, at that time there was only a bus stop pole. Everyday, she had to wait under the scorching sun or in heavy rain.
She asked whether something could be done or at least a simple shelter could be built.
I explained that due to space constraints a conventional shelter was difficult at that location but I would look into possible solutions.
A few days later, while in Songkhla Old Town, Hat Yai, I came across a compact bus shelter that inspired me. I immediately thought of her situation and took a photo to share with MBPP Engineering Department.
In October 2023, when I was appointed by DAP as an MBPP Councillor, one of my first initiatives was to push for the introduction of mini bus stops.
With the strong support from Puan Tuti and her team in MBPP Engineering Department, we work closely on the design of the mini bus stop. Subsequently the design was tabled and approved by the Infrastructure Committee in 2024 and on the same year we installed the very first mini bus stop at the very site where the issue was raised.
Since then throughout 2024 and 2025, we have expanded the programme across Penang Island, refining the design through continuous feedback resulting in improved versions being implemented.
Earlier this year during a visit to Penang, YB Anthony Loke Siew F**k, Minister of Transport announced additional funding for MBPP, allowing us to accelerate the rollout of even more mini bus stops across the island.
That is why more and more mini bus stops are now appearing in various locations across Penang Island.
While car users may see bus stops as minor infrastructure, for many others especially seniors, students, workers, and those without private transport they are essential. A simple shelter means protection from sun and rain, and a more dignified daily commute.
As Penang moves forward with LRT and wider public transport improvements, we must continue investing in infrastructure that supports first and last mile connectivity to build a more inclusive and sustainable city.
That is why even a small initiative like a mini bus stop matters. It may seem modest, but for daily users it makes a real difference.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Puan Tuti and her team in MBPP Engineering Department for their dedication in developing and refining the design from the very beginning. My thanks also go to all members of the Infrastructure Committee for their support and approval of the initiative, as well as YB Anthony Loke Siew F**k for providing additional funding that enabled us to expand the programme across Penang Island.
This project reflects the importance of cooperation between the State and Federal Government in delivering real benefits to the people. When we work together with a shared purpose, even a simple idea can grow into something that improves the daily lives of thousands.
