PRESS RELEASE
RUSSIAN BALLISTIC MISSILE STRIKE ON SUMY DURING
PALM SUNDAY CELEBRATIONS
On the morning of April 13, Palm Sunday, as Ukrainians gathered to celebrate one of the holiest Christian holidays, the Russian Federation committed yet another heinous war crime by launching a ballistic missile attack on the city of Sumy.
Two missiles struck the city center in a deliberate and calculated act of terror. One missile hit a public trolleybus filled with civilians. The second targeted the Cultural Center of Sumy University, where local residents were attending educational and cultural events. As of today, at least 34 civilians were killed, including two children, and more than 100 others were injured.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha strongly condemned the attack, stating “Just now, in the morning of Palm Sunday, when believers go to church to celebrate the Lord’s entry into Jerusalem, Russia launched a horrific attack on the residential area of Sumy city. Many civilians have been killed and injured. Launching such an attack on a major Christian holiday is absolute evil.”
This deliberate strike on civilians is not an isolated incident but part of Russia’s ongoing campaign of terror against Ukraine. For the second consecutive month, Russia has rejected the United States’ proposal for a full ceasefire, which Ukraine accepted unconditionally on March 11. Instead, the Kremlin continues to escalate its violence and atrocities.
Ukraine is urgently sharing all information regarding this barbaric act with its international partners and institutions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on all governments and international organizations to:
• Condemn Russia’s deliberate attack on civilians;
• Provide Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities to protect its cities and people;
• Increase diplomatic and economic pressure on Moscow to end its war of aggression;
• Strengthen and accelerate the implementation of real and effective security guarantees for Ukraine.
“Strength is the only language they can understand and the only way to put an end to the horrific terror,” the Foreign Minister emphasized.
This Palm Sunday, while millions prayed for peace, Russia chose murder. Ukraine mourns the victims of Sumy and reaffirms its determination to defend its people and sovereignty. The world must respond. Ukrainian lives depend on it.
