How do you build a railway tunnel through the heart of the Alps? 🇨🇭⛰️

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel — a project that transformed rail travel and freight transport across Europe.

Stretching 57 km beneath the Alps, the world's longest railway tunnel plays a key role in connecting northern and southern Europe, helping people and goods move more efficiently and environmentally friendly across the continent. Its construction was a remarkable feat that required years of planning, innovation and collaboration by thousands of dedicated professionals.

A decade on, the Gotthard Base Tunnel remains a landmark achievement in infrastructure and a vital link in Europe's transport network.

🌊 A rare meeting of two rivers that don’t mix

At La Jonction in Geneva, the Rhône and the Arve flow side by side in a striking natural contrast.

The Rhône, coming from the Rhône Glacier and passing through Lake Geneva, appears clear and calm. The Arve, from the Mont-Blanc region, is faster, more turbulent and rich in sediment.

Differences in speed, temperature and sediment keep them visibly separated—before they gradually merge further downstream on their journey toward the Mediterranean Sea.

🇨🇭 Switzerland has one of Europe’s lowest youth unemployment rates — and its dual education system plays a central role.

Students combine classroom education with hands-on experience in companies, gaining practical skills in the labour market while still at school. This close integration between education and work helps ensure a smooth transition into full employment later.

The model is built on flexibility, employability and strong alignment between education and industry needs.

Switzerland doesn’t grow coffee beans… yet it’s the world’s second-largest coffee exporter by value! 🇨🇭☕️
What’s even more interesting: Swiss coffee exports are worth more than chocolate and cheese exports combined.

How is that possible?
Coffee beans are imported from around the world and transformed in Switzerland into premium products such as capsules, instant coffee and specialty coffees before being exported globally.

Switzerland has become a global coffee hub, home to a thriving “Coffee Valley” that brings together major coffee companies, traders and experts. Its success is also driven by Swiss precision engineering: around 70% of the world’s fully automatic coffee machines contain Swiss-made technology or components.

Did you know Switzerland’s rail network allows you to cross the country in just a few hours? 🚆🇨🇭

In around 4 hours, travellers can journey from Geneva to St. Gallen, moving from west to east through breathtaking landscapes — from lakes and vineyards to alpine mountains and Swiss countryside. 🏔️🐄

These journeys are made possible by a dense and highly coordinated rail network that supports everyday mobility and connects cities, regions and remote alpine areas through reliable public transport.
