San Miguel's oldest passageway rests in the heart of the city just beyond the walls of Mesones 5. Pasaje Allende was once the corridor that housed horseback travelers in bunks next to the stable for their steeds. These were the days before cars, before expats, and before San Miguel became celebrated for its art and history. Until now, the Pasaje Allende has remained one of San Miguel's few secret heritage spaces. The grand entryway from Mesones 5 at first appears as another courtyard of shops, a familiar sight in San Miguel. Yet as you walk past the arched foyer landing, you arrive at a cascading pedestrian road leading clear to Puente de Umaran. Rustic stone walls line the wide open-air passage that's teeming with a collection of local shops. Pasaje Allende is a reminder of San Miguel's yesteryear, quaint and charming. A place where walking through, the shop owners take the time to look up from their handy work and offer a genuine "buenos dias" as you ramble on your way. Though the Pasaje has retained an almost antique charm, there is a beginning emergence of modern and unique "tiendas" and showrooms. El más antiguo Pasaje de San Miguel de Allende permanece en el corazón de la ciudad detrás de los muros de la calle Mesones 5. El Pasaje Allende fue hace algunos años el corredor que recibía a los viajeros con sus corceles. En la época previa a los coches y de los expatriados, antes de que San Miguel fuera conocida por su arte e historia. Hasta ahora, el Pasaje Allende se mantiene como uno de los secretos mejor guardados. La entrada por Mesones 5 tiene una apariencia familiar a San Miguel y pareciera que es un pequeño corredor de tiendas como cualquier otro en San Miguel. Pero una vez que uno decide adentrarse a recorrer sus arcos, uno puede atravesar hasta la calle Puente de Umarán. Los muros de piedra enmarcan al pasaje que se encuentra al aire libre, con una colección de tiendas locales muy interesantes.
