Digital Innovation is Transforming Malawiโ€™s Fresh Food Markets ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ“ฑ

Today, we had the privilege of conducting a hands-on practical training with Lilongwe City Council (LCC) Revenue Collectors, equipping them with the skills to support market vendors in using the new USSD digital payment platform (*4555*00 #), which works on any mobile phoneโ€”smartphone or feature phone.

This practical session marked another important milestone in the digital transformation of Lilongweโ€™s public markets.

By enabling vendors to pay market fees quickly, securely, and transparently, the platform is helping build more efficient, accountable, and inclusive market systems.

But digitalization is about far more than revenue collection.

Well-managed markets create healthier trading environments where food vendors can operate more efficiently, municipal services can be strengthened, and investments in sanitation, waste management, clean water, and food safety can be better supported.

These improvements contribute to safer fresh food markets and ultimately to better nutrition and public health for urban communities.

We are proud to contribute to what we believe is a pioneering initiative within Africaโ€™s fresh food market sectorโ€”advancing the digital transformation of informal market systems as part of the broader global vision championed by ICLEI Africa Africa to strengthen resilient, sustainable, and people-centred cities.

As NutriCare Malawi , we are honoured to work alongside Lilongwe City Council, ICLEI Africa in supporting a future where innovation, technology, and good governance strengthen local food systems and improve the lives of both traders and consumers.

Digital markets are not only more efficientโ€”they are better positioned to deliver safer food, stronger local economies, and healthier cities.

Building Capacity for Smarter Market Management in Lilongwe

Today, on our ongoing project with ICLEI Africa, https://africa.iclei.org/ NutriCare MW had the privilege of training Lilongwe City Council market fee collectors on how to effectively navigate and use the new Digital Market Revenue Collection Platform.

This training marks another important milestone in Lilongwe City Councilโ€™s digital transformation journey.

By equipping frontline officers with the skills to use the system confidently, we are laying the foundation for a more efficient, transparent, and accountable approach to market revenue management.

The digital platform will help:
โ€ข Improve the accuracy and efficiency of market fee collection.
โ€ข Reduce manual errors and strengthen financial accountability.
โ€ข Enable real-time revenue monitoring and reporting for better decision-making.
โ€ข Enhance service delivery through faster and more reliable transactions.
โ€ข Strengthen communication between the Council and market vendors.
โ€ข Generate quality data to support evidence-based planning and investment in market infrastructure.

Digital transformation is not only about adopting new technologyโ€”it is about empowering people with the knowledge and skills to use that technology to deliver better public services.

We are proud to support Lilongwe City Council Offices , in partnership with ICLEI Africa, https://africa.iclei.org/ in advancing a modern, transparent, and data-driven market management system that contributes to stronger local governance and better outcomes for traders and residents alike.

Together, we are building smarter markets, stronger institutions, and a better Lilongwe.

What if the most powerful solution to climate change has been in our communities all along?

Too often, we look for answers in new technologies while overlooking the generations of wisdom held by Indigenous people and local communities.

The future of agriculture isnโ€™t just about producing more foodโ€”itโ€™s about restoring ecosystems, empowering communities, and ensuring social justice.

When we combine indigenous knowledge with science and innovation, we create food systems that are more resilient, sustainable, and equitable.

At NutriCare MW ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ this is the future weโ€™re committed to building.
Every small action counts toward a more regenerative future.

At the Sustainable Gastronomy Week Celebration, Nutricare proudly showcased grasshoppers as part of Malawi's rich indigenous food heritage.

Often overlooked, grasshoppers are highly nutritious, environmentally sustainable, and have long been part of our traditional diets. By celebrating indigenous foods, we're reminding ourselves that local solutions can play a powerful role in improving nutrition, preserving culture, and strengthening resilient food systems.

We were delighted to see participants embrace the tasting experience and engage in conversations about the value of traditional foods in building healthier communities.

A heartfelt thank you to Norwegian Church Aid Malawi and Dan Church Aid (DCA), whose support continues to advance our work in promoting sustainable nutrition in Malawi.

Together, we're preserving tradition while nourishing the future.

Celebrating Malawiโ€™s Food Heritage Through Sustainable Gastronomy ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ ๐Ÿฆ—๐Ÿฆ—๐Ÿฆ—

NutriCare MW was proud to participate in the Sustainable Gastronomy Week Celebration hosted by the World Food Forum Malawi Chapter on 19 June 2026 at the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre under the theme, โ€œCelebrating Malawiโ€™s Food Heritage.โ€

The event provided a valuable platform for stakeholders to explore the importance of indigenous foods, nutrition, innovation, and sustainable food systems in preserving Malawiโ€™s rich food heritage while building a healthier and more resilient future.

As part of the sustainable food tasting experience, NutriCare MW proudly showcased our roasted grasshopper, a nutritious indigenous food that highlights the potential of traditional and locally available foods in promoting food security, improved nutrition, and sustainable diets. The enthusiastic response from participants demonstrated the growing appreciation for Malawiโ€™s diverse food heritage and the role indigenous foods can play in transforming agrifood systems.

We were inspired by the insightful discussions on sustainable gastronomy, youth engagement, entrepreneurship, and the future of Malawiโ€™s food culture. These conversations reinforced the importance of embracing local food solutions while preserving the knowledge and traditions that have nourished communities for generations.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our valued donors, Norwegian Church Aid Malawi and DCA, whose unwavering support continues to strengthen NutriCare MWโ€™s efforts in promoting nutrition, food system transformation, and sustainable community development. Your commitment enables us to champion innovative approaches that celebrate local foods while improving nutrition outcomes across Malawi.

We also thank the World Food Forum Malawi Chapter and all participating partners and stakeholders for creating an inspiring space to celebrate Malawiโ€™s food heritage and advance dialogue on sustainable gastronomy.

Together, we can preserve our traditional foods, promote sustainable diets, and empower communities to build resilient and inclusive food systems for generations to come.
