Director of Education and Sports (DES) for Rumphi District Council, Fides Msowoya, has hailed a quiz competition, the Phungu Wanga Project, conducted in Rumphi for helping children (learners) understand parliamentary processes and prepare them to be informed and active citizens.

Speaking on Friday during the quiz competition final between Mhuju and Mbulunji primary schools at Mhuju CCAP Church in the district, she said the quiz has increased their hunger to learn.

Field Officer for Phungu Wanga Project, George Ntaba, said the project has been able to engage at least 9000 learners through the quiz competition and has been satisfied with their interest in learning about parliamentary roles.

Mhuju Primary School's winning quiz team member, Mwayi Chanya, said that through the project, they have learnt the primary roles of members of parliament and will now be able to lobby for issues that fall within MPs' scope of work.

Mhuju beat Mbulunji by 225 points to 167, respectively.

The project is funded by the European Union and implemented by Save the Children in partnership with the Centre for Civil Society Strengthening in Mchinji, Balaka and Rumphi.

Department of Disaster Management (DODMA) with financial support from Norwegian Church Aid and Dan Church Aid (NCA/DCA) has organized a three-day training for Rumphi District Council’s Disaster Risk Management Committee (DRMC) in Anticipatory Action Approach to enhance disaster risk management at local level.

In an interview, Director of Planning and Development for Rumphi District Council, Obed Mwalughali has said although the council already has a disaster management plan in place, the training will equip the committee to be proactive when handling disaster risks.

“This training is equipping us to be proactive as opposed to being reactive to disasters. To get prepared, watch and act before a disaster hits and not wait and until a disaster strikes. The knowledge will also be shared with Area Disaster Risk Management Committees as you know Rumphi is prone to floods,” said Mwalughali.

Senior Humanitarian Officer for NCA/DCA, Augustine Mpho Tonde said the new approach which focuses on actions done before an impending disaster including relocating people from disaster prone areas helps to save lives and reduce costs that are incurred when a disaster such as flooding strikes.

He further said the organization will support three districts with training in this approach as one way of enhancing preparedness to handle disaster risks as they are mostly at the frontline of disasters.

The training which started on Wednesday will conclude on Friday. Nsanje and Thyolo districts are also expected to benefit from the training.
