*Man jailed 18 years for sexual in*******se with step daughter*

The Chief Resident Magistrate court sitting in Nkhotakota, on April 8, 2024, convicted and sentenced a 50 year-old Robert Mwale Kachingwe to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour for having sexual in*******se with an 11 year-old step daughter.

The court through state Prosecutor Inspector Thokozani Juziwel of Nkhotakota Police heard that the convict married to the victim's mother some 3 years ago and took advantage the presence of the girl in the house and has been defiling the girl for several occasions.

The convict has been threatening to stab the girl with a sharp knife if she dared to reveal the ordeal.

Juziwel further told the court that, when the girl got tired with the malpractice, she reported the matter to Nkhotakota Police on November 30, 2023, where she was issued a medical form to go to the hospital for treatment and examination.

Results from Nkhotakota District Hospital revealed that the victim has been indeed defiled leading to his arrest.

Appearing before court, he pleaded not guilty to the charge. This prompted the state to parade five witnesses who proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and he was convicted consequently.

In his submission, Police prosecutor Inspector Juziwel asked the court for a stiffer punishment to deter other would be offenders.

Juziwel further said, the convict had a responsibility of protecting the girl but instead choose to defile the innocent little girl.

Passing sentence, Chief Resident Magistrate Madalitso Chimwaza concurred with the state hence sentenced him to 18 years imprisonment with hard as a deterrent to other would be offenders.

*Father arrested for in**st, impregnates biological daughter*

Police in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody a 60 year-old Adam Halidi for allegedly defiling and impregnating his 15 year-old daughter in the district.

The incident happened between the month of February and May 2021 at Makuta village.

Mother to the victim, noticed some strange behaviours from her daughter. This prompted the mother to investigate more.

Upon asking her what exactly happened to her, the victim disclosed that she had been sleeping with her father on several occasions since February 2021.

The report was made at the Nkhotakota Police where she was given a medical form for examination and treatment at Nkhotakota District Hospital.

The results from the hospital revealed that the victim had been defiled and is 5 months old pregnant.

Following the results from the hospital, the suspect was arrested and charged with a case of in**st contravening section 157 of the Penal Code.

The suspect, comes from Makuta village in the area of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.

*Woman nabbed for allegedly killing her newly born baby*

Police in Nkhotakota are keeping in custody a 22-year old Steria Manda, for allegedly strungling to death her newly born baby boy.

On September 13, 2021 at around 04:00 hours, the suspect went to St Anne's Mission Hospital complaining of abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomitting.

Whilst at the hospital being attended by the nurse, she asked to answer a call of nature.

Whilst in ladies' room, it is believed that she delivered of a baby boy.

Later, she came out with a dead body in her hands with fractures on both arms and bruises on the neck.

Nurses at the hospital were shocked and reported the matter to Nkhotakota Police Station where officers swiftly went to the hospital.

Postmortem conducted at the hospital established that strangulation and head injury are the causes of the death.

Meanwhile, the suspect has confessed to have twisted the neck of the newly born baby, but she is mum on the reasons for doing that.

Currently, the suspect is in police custody and will appear in court soon.

*Two robbers get 10 years IHL each in Nkhotakota*

The Nkhotakota First Grade Magistrate's Court has convicted and sentenced two robbers to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour each for five counts of robberies and breaking in the district.

The court through the state prosecutor, Inspector W***y Asibu heard that the two were arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Mkaika adhoc roadblock and Sani Village respectively.

The two robbers are Madalitso Makuluni, 39, and Happy Gondwe, 42.

Asibu told the jam packed court that in the wee hours of July 19, 2020 the duo, armed with panga knives, invaded the Grand View Lodge in Nkhotakota and broke into five rooms.

They tied the watchmen, attacked customers in the rooms and went away with four different laptops, eight different cellphones and other assorted items, all worth about K2,746,000 including cash amounting to K400,000.

The matter was reported to Nkhotakota Police Station and the scene of crime was visited.

Investigations were instituted that led to the arrest of one accused at Mkaika adhoc roadblock and the second one was arrested in the forest of Sani Village in the district.

Upon being interrogated, they admitted to have been behind the criminal syndicate.

Police managed to recover the following items: Seven different cellphones, assorted clothes and some other properties worth thousands of kwachas.

Some of the stolen items were positively identified by the owners.

Appearing in court, they both pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against them.

In mitigation, both convicts asked the court to exercise leniency when passing the sentence, saying they have families to look after, but prosecutor Asibu prayed for stiffer sentence stating that the offence they committed is serious in nature and they are a threat to the society.

First Grade Magistrate Felix Phayiya concurred with the state and slapped each one of them to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour on each count, but the sentences will run concurrently.

Gondwe hails from Zolozolo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mbelwa in Mzimba while Makuluni hails from Bawi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Makwangwala in Ntheu district.

Police in the district are assuring the public of their safety and will come up with strategic plans to reduce crime in the district and brought to book all perpetrators.

*Man murdered in Nkhotakota, police launch manhunt*

A 45 year old man in Nkhotakota have been murdered by unknown people. The incident happened on the night of August 17-18, 2021 at Chibothera in the district.

The deceased has been identified as Christopher Gilemu of Bango village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwadzama in Nkhotakota.

It is reported that, on the material day, Gilemu went to Mpamantha trading center for other business and was last seen at Mkaika trading center at around 20:00 hours.

Surprisingly, Gilemu did not report back home until on the wee hours of August 18, 2021, when he was found dead at Chibothera primary school with bruises around the shoulder.

The matter was reported to Nkhotakota Police Station who swiftly rushed to the scene and the body was taken to Nkhotakota District Hospital where postmortem conducted revealed that, death was caused by internal bleeding.

Meanwhile, police in the district have launched a manhunt to bring to book the perpetrators.

*Two suspected robbers nabbed in Nkhotakota, some property recovered*

Police in Nkhotakota have arrested two people on suspicion that they are involved in robbery and breaking offences at Grand View Lodge in the district.

The two, who hail from Mzimba district, were arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Mkaika adhorc roadblock and Sani Village respectively.

They have been identified as Anthony Banda, 28, of Chagunda Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chagunda and Happy Gondwe, 42, of Zolozolo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mbelwa.

It is reported that on the wee hours of July 19, 2020, the above mentioned suspects, armed with panga knives, invaded the lodge and broke into five rooms.

They tied the watchmen and attacked customers in the rooms, and went away with four different laptops, eight different cellphones and other assorted items worth millions and cash amounting to K400,000. The value of the stolen property being K2,746,000.

The matter was reported to Nkhotakota Police Station and the scene of crime was visited.

Investigations were instituted whereby one suspect was arrested at Mkaika adhorc roadblock and the second one arrested in the forest of Sani Village in the district.

Upon being interrogated, they admitted to have been behind the criminal syndicate.

Police managed to recover the following items; seven different cellphones, assorted clothes and some other properties worth thousands of kwachas. The value of the recovered properties not yet known as investigations are under way.

Some of the stolen items have been positively identified by the owner.

The two have since been charged with robbery, breaking into a building and committing a felony therein, and theft. They will appear in court soon to answer charges leveled against them.

Police in the district is assuring the general public of their safety and will not relent until all culprits are tracked down and put to book.

*Man arrested for sodomizing a boy in Nkhotakota*

Police in Nkhotakota have arrested a 37 year man for allegedly sodomizing an 8 year old boy (name withheld) in the district.

The man has been identified as Abdala Kalila of Kamkuwazi village in the area of Traditional Authority Malengachanzi Nkhotakota district.

It is reported that on February 26, 2021 at around 1900 hours at Chiwaula village, the boy and his two friends were playing at a certain shop in the village.

Suddenly, the suspect came and grabbed the boy and took him to the bush where he sodomized him.

Some passersby heard a strange voice at the bush and swiftly went to find out the source of the voice.

Surprisingly they discovered that it was Kalila on top of the young boy but he fled away after noticing the people.

They took the boy to his parents who later reported the matter to group village head man Chiwaula.

The matter was later reported to Nkhotakota police, leading to the suspect's arrest.

Kalila is expected to appear before Nkhotakota magistrate's court soon to answer a charge of so**my contrary to Section 153 of the Penal code.

*Witchdoctor arrested, community march against police in KK*

Police in Nkhotakota on February 24, 2021 arrested a 46 year old witchdoctor for allegedly charging people with witchcraft.

The suspect has been identified as Wizzy Vitima Mhango of Munyonga village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira in Rumphi district but currently based at Siluwi village in Nkhotakota.

It is reported that, on June 2020, people of Mgombe village and surrounding villages decided to invite a witchfinder to deal with some people practicing witchcraft.

All 24 villages agreed and then group village head man Mgombe called the witch doctor who demanded K400,000 and was given.

On November 2020, the witch finder came and started his job. He has been in the village for over 3 months.

Later on February 23, 2021, police received a report that at Mgombe a certain man was charging people with witchcraft.

Following the report, police on February 24, 2021 arrested the suspect.

Suddenly, on February 25, 2021, a group of people called themselves concerned citizens marched against police demanding the release of the witchdoctor.

However, police called upon some chiefs and group leaders for discussion. The station's Officer In-Charge Mr Isaac Norman, ACP, bemoaned the conduct of chiefs in mobilising children to march against the lawful police conduct.

Meanwhile, he sensitized them on witchcraft and offences contravened by their action from employing witch finder, accusing people of witchcraft and soliciting money from the alleged witchcraft people.

Principal village head man Mgombe who was leading the group, at the end accepted to have made a mistake by employing witch doctor and he apologized.

Norman singled out on how laws is all about on witchcraft Act.

He said: "It is unlawful to call the witchdoctor on anything to do witchcraft practices. It is also unlawful for people to riot."

*Boy, 16, murdered in Nkhotakota*

Police in Nkhotakota have launched a manhunt for unknown assailant(s) who allegedly brutally murdered a 16-year-old boy in the district before dumping him into the waters of Lake Malawi.

The deceased has been identified as Swadi Selemani of Ching'amba village Sub Traditional Authority Kalimanjira in Nkhotakota.

It is reported that, on February 20, 2021 a brother to the deceased, Kabuli Safi, 46, received information from members of community policing that his brother was found trapped dead in a fishing net at Ching'amba fishing dock 500 metres away from the shore.

Upon receipt of the information, he reported the matter to Nkhotakota police and together with medical personnel from Nkhotakota district hospital visited the scene.

The dead body was found with stab wounds on the right side of the neck, arm and belly.

Postmortem was conducted and established that the death was due to haemorrhage secondary to stab wounds.

Meanwhile, police have instituted investigations to bring to book the assailant(s) to answer murder charge.
