Beyond Our Hearts Foundation (BOHF) was proud to be part of an important gathering hosted by the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ) and Women Lawyers Association (WLA) at the University of Malawi in Zomba, bringing together law students, legal professionals, academics, traditional leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders committed to advancing justice and protecting the rights of women and children.
A major highlight was Senior Chief Chikumbu’s inspiring account of community action against child marriage. Through traditional leadership and community interventions, 2,043 child marriages have reportedly been prevented or eliminated in her area, with penalties collected from perpetrators being used to support girls to remain in school and pursue their education.
The event also showcased CFJ’s commitment to expanding access to justice in Malawi, including its work through 32 legal clinics, the development of an AI-powered legal support chatbot, and collaboration with Microsoft on technology that includes Chichewa-language capabilities.
The discussions reinforced the importance of combining traditional leadership, legal services, education, technology, community advocacy and civil society partnerships to address child marriage, SGBV and other barriers to justice.
For Beyond Our Hearts Foundation, participation in this important function provided an opportunity to connect with key actors and strengthen collaboration around child protection, ending child marriage, girls’ education, SGBV prevention and access to justice.
The presence of organisations such as Girls Not Brides Malawi, legal professionals, academics, traditional leaders and justice-sector stakeholders demonstrated the importance of collective action in creating safer and more just communities for children and women.
Together, we can protect children, empower girls, expand access to justice and work towards ending child marriages
