The Office has been at Khombedza, Siyasiya, Ngodzi, Chipoka, and Lifidzi.

The Ombudsman Hon. Grace T. Malera, in her capacity as a Member of the Malawi Prison Inspectorate, today conducted an Inspection Visit at Kasungu Prison.

During the visit which is part of the series of scheduled Prison Inspection Visits by the Inspectorate, Hon. Malera appreciated the various initiatives the Prison is implementing in a bid to be self-reliant, including maize, vegetables and fruits farming and rearing of pigs.

In the 2025/2026 growing season, the Prison harvested over 2000 bags of maize and is also processing soya into Likuni Phala which is distributed to a cross section of prisons in the country.

Hon. Malera also noted that the prison is constructing a perimeter fence using burnt bricks made at the facility and skills by some of the prisoners saying these efforts need sustained support by Government and other stakeholders.

However, the visit revealed critical challenges including overcrowding of prisoners, lack of transport (vehicles) and shortage of basic drugs at the prison's health facility, as well as housing challenges for the Prison staff which the Honorable ombudsman said needed urgent attention stressing that ‘the true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’ ...including prisoners.

The Office of the Ombudsman participated in the National Indaba on Parliament's Representative Role this week at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

The high-level meeting brought together key stakeholders in the governance sector to examine pathways for strengthening Parliament's role and empowering citizen-centered leadership across the nation.

Central to the discussions was defining meaningful parliamentary leadership that actively amplifies citizens' voices, deepens public participation and fosters inclusive decision-making in a democratic society.

Specifically, Members of Parliament were challenged to look beyond their legislative duties by focusing on enhancing public service delivery, improving accessibility, ensuring robust government oversight and restoring public trust.

Delivering the opening remarks, Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Sameer Suleman, MP, underscored the fundamental purpose of parliamentary office, emphasizing that true representation requires members to actively carry the voices and aspirations of citizens.

"Parliament's role does not end with legislative action, however it extends to exercising a mandate to scrutinize government performance," he noted.

The Indaba concluded with a collective consensus among stakeholders to leverage strategic partnerships and collaborative leadership to better align parliamentary business with the needs and priorities of the citizenry.

The Office of the Ombudsman, in collaboration with the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau and Malawi Human Rights Commission, under the Awareness Pool Fund, conducted capacity building training workshops at the Mangochi, Machinga and Zomba District Councils from 10th to 14th August, 2026.

The training aimed to enhance participant’s understanding of these constitutional bodies’ key institutional mandates while strengthening collaborative referral systems for human rights and justice related cases.

Supported by the European Union through the Chilungamo Programme II, the initiative targeted frontline complaint handling institutions at the district level, such as Community Victim Support Units, Grievance Redress Committees and One Stop Centers among others.

During the sessions, participants shared their day to day experiences in complaint intake and management, received training on proper documentation and record keeping of cases and identified ways on strengthening a referral mechanism that prevents duplicated work and resolves grievances promptly.

Highlighting the impact of the workshop, a representative from Mangochi District Council Principal Social Welfare Officer, Patrick Cholopi, noted that the trainings were insightful for complaint handlers.

"We have gained valuable insights on expediting cases through our shared referral channels. As complaint handlers we intend to continue collaborating closely to avoid duplication of efforts in complaint handling”, he said.

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Honourable Charles Mhango, last week visited the Headquarters of the Office of the Ombudsman, on an institutional engagement tour.

During this visit, the Ombudsman, Honourable Grace Tikambenji Malera, presented a comprehensive overview of the Office's core operations, key operational challenges and strategic plans aimed at expediting its services to the public.

Malera highlighted operational progress, including the strengthening of the institution's legal framework, the expansion of systemic investigations to enhance access to justice for Malawians and the utilization of the Hospital Ombudsman platform to promote the resolution of cases within public health institutions.

She further outlined critical operational constraints affecting the Office. Key among these challenges is the lack of adequate office space, the need to operationalize satellite offices in districts such as Mangochi, Nsanje, Karonga and Nkhotakota and lack of IT infrastructure required to digitize complaint handling and management.

"This engagement provided a platform to present the Office's operational challenges directly to the Minister and explore collaborative ways the Ministry can advocate for our priorities and champion these issues in the policy making circles", she said.

Hon. Malera further highlighted the Office's plans to scale up systemic investigations in critical sectors of public interest and advance digital transformation in complaint handling and management.

In response, Mhango expressed commitment to prioritising the relocation of the Office to address current space constraints. He also pledged to present and lobby for strengthening of institutional operations.

The engagement concluded with an interactive session between the Minister and members of staff, providing employees with an opportunity to share their day-to-day work experiences.
