CEO on the Move

Today, our CEO Mr. Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira had an interface meeting with the media to share his bold vision for SMEDCO and the future of SMEs in Malawi.

First and foremost, he extended heartfelt gratitude to the appointing authority for the honour and trust bestowed upon him. He takes this responsibility with great seriousness.

Key takeaways from the briefing:

Industrial transformation – SMEDCO is set to spearhead the transformation of the SME sector by intensifying local manufacturing.

Manufacturing hubs in every constituency – The CEO plans to lobby the Ministry of Local Government to allocate CDF resources for the construction of manufacturing hubs across all constituencies in Malawi.

Simplifying the system – He acknowledged that the struggle for SMEs exists because the system is too complex. Simplifying it is key to achieving meaningful impact.

Stakeholder collaboration – SMEDCO will work hand-in-hand with all stakeholders to ensure the sector moves together in one direction.

Innovative hub conversion – A unique proposal: lobby to transform vacated construction campsites (e.g., road construction contractor sites) into manufacturing hubs. A successful example already exists – the Phalombe EDC, built on a former road construction campsite.

Market access & partnerships – SMEDCO will facilitate market opportunities by forging partnerships with supermarkets, wholesalers, and distributors both locally and in neighbouring countries. The goal is to off-take certified products manufactured by locals in the districts and expand market pe*******on for Malawian-made goods.

Economic impact – SMEDCO will be at the forefront of helping SMEs contribute significantly to Malawi's GDP and track forex savings through local manufacturing of products.

The journey to transform Malawi's SME sector has begun. Together, we move forward! 💪🇲🇼

CEO on the move – and what a move it’s turning out to be!

From our last update, you saw the CEO kicking off the tour and today, we’re at Chatha Leather Design Studio, where the energy is absolutely electric.

Mr Kachamba says apart from the Shoes the factory manufactures , machines available are enough to also manufacture some products such as Travelling Bags commonly known as expands, Ladies Leather handbags , leather car seaters , executive belts , Wallets and has given direction to explore these and that the center should immediately come up with samples for each new proposed product to appreciate potential and align with the Government vision of industrialization. He notices that the center can do more than the usual

He got a firsthand look at how we’re producing high-quality leather products from security shoes and safety boots to durable school shoes and more. And let’s just say… he was blown away.

Not just by the craftsmanship but by the potential. The potential to create jobs, build local value, and position Malawi as a serious player in leather manufacturing.

Here’s the exciting part:
The Government of Malawi has already allocated 1 billion kwacha to build a state-of-the-art leather manufacturing plant right here at this centre.

One day at a time – the dream is becoming real.

Stay tuned. The best is yet to come.

On a small island surrounded by fresh water, something significant was happening over the last three days.

From May 13 to 16, 2026, SMEDI Regional Office North conducted a three-day entrepreneurship and business management training on Likoma Island for 30 MSME owners. But this was more than just training. It was a reminder that businesses do not grow by chance. They grow through knowledge, strategy, discipline, and continuous learning.

The MSME owners were equipped with practical skills in:

• Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurial Traits
• Why Businesses Fail and How to Avoid It
• SWOT Analysis
• Marketing
• Market Research
• Business Growth Strategies
• Costing and Pricing
• Record Keeping
• Profit Calculation Utilisation
• Sources of Finance
• Business Formalization

Many MSMEs struggle not because the owners lack passion, but because they lack exposure to critical business knowledge. A good product alone is not enough. A business owner must understand customers, pricing, competition, finances, systems, growth, and sustainability.

One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is believing that learning ends once a business starts making money. In reality, the businesses that survive and grow are led by people who never stop learning.

The market is changing. Customers are changing. Competition is increasing. Technology is evolving. If entrepreneurs stop learning, their businesses eventually stop growing.

Whether you are selling tomatoes, running a salon, farming, baking, tailoring, or operating a shop, your business needs structure, planning, and strategy to move to the next level.

At SMEDI, we believe entrepreneurship is one of the strongest tools for building our country’s economy, creating jobs, and transforming communities. That is why business development training remains critical for empowering MSMEs across the country.

Whether you are just starting your business or have been operating for years, never become too experienced to learn. The moment learning stops, growth slows down. Invest in your knowledge. Strengthen your mindset. Build your business intentionally. Your business can only grow to the level of the entrepreneur leading it.
